GTO

PERSONAL

INTERVIEW
The Screening test
includes the Verbal and
Non Verbal test and the
PPDT.The Screening Test
or also called as the Stage
1 testing, is the first test.
The lot of candidates is
put through it, which
comprises of two
intelligence tests (Verbal
and Non Verbal) followed
by PP&DT(Picture
Perception and Discussion
Test). The Intelligence
tests are similar to IQ tests
conducted in any
admission/ entrance exam.
Based on your
performance in these two
tests, your intelligence
rating is derived and this
put together with your
performance in the PPDT
will decide your selection
for the second stage
testing. These tests
usually involve grammar,
verbal analogies,
synonyms, antonyms etc.
Because they depend on
understanding the precise
meaning of words, idioms
and the structure of the
language, they require
practice and regular
reading of newspaper and
books. You will get 45

questions, and 30 minutes

to solve these.
Moving on to the more
important test, i.e. PP&DTThis is a simple yet
powerful test to filter the
desirable candidates for
the second stage testing..
Here the candidates are
shown a hazy picture for
30 seconds and thereafter
4 minutes are given to
write a story. One is
required to identify the
number of characters,
age, sex, mood and then
go on t write a story
bringing out the situation
perceived in the picture,
what must have led to the
situation and what is the
likely outcome of the
situation. After 15 minutes
of break, the candidates
are divided into the groups
of 15-20. They are made
to sit in a semicircular
fashion and narrate the
story one by one.
Now , Following are the
important points to be kept
in mind:

When you see the hazy

picture, try to see how

many persons are there.

See if the person whom

you want to make the main

character of your story is a

character of your story is a

male or a female.

Please, stick to the

picture and form a story in

your mind. Do not try to
complicate the situation by
over thinking about the
picture. It is your simple
perception and not
mugged up stories
beforehand.

See the picture for

complete 30 seconds and

observe the details. What
most people do is the
moment they see the
picture, they start off with
writing the story. This is
where they make a
mistake. When you do so,
the chain of thinking will be
hindered and you might
not be able to continue the
story in a very presentable
manner.

Instead take your time

to think about the story for

30 seconds, rest 3 minutes
and 30 seconds are more
than enough for you to
write the story.

Do not scribble, write

legible handwriting.
Remember, your first
impression is the last
impression.

After you are done with

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

After you are done with

this, dont take the break

as a break for it is your
time to practice the
narration of your story.
Immediately, find a corner
and try recollecting what
all you have written and
then start narrating the
story to yourself.

Keep repeating it at

least 10 times.

Now when your turn

comes, speak firmly,

confidently, without
stammering or using any
fillers like "aaa....umm...."
Keep it simple and short.

During the discussion,

do not try to jump off.

Listen to other people's
points. Add your own
points. Do not repeat
points. Be humble, if the
discussion is way too
heated up, do not hesitate
to bring it down by saying,
"Gentlemen, let this be a
friendly and healthy
discussion and not a fish
market."

TESTING- or the

psychometric testing is
based on the principles of
projective testing. In this,
there is a series of tests
like THEMATIC
APPERCEPTION TEST
(TAT), WORD
ASSOCIATION TEST
(WAT), SITUATION
REACTION TEST (SRT),
SELF DESCRIPTION (SD).
It is believed that the
responses to these tests
are an outcome of the
candidate's personality
traits and thus an
estimation of his/her traits
can be made by going
through the candidate's
response to various
stimuli.
Personality is defined as,
"particular combination of
emotional, attitudinal and
behavioral response
patterns of the individual."
From this, it is evident that
it has more to do with the
internal sate of a person
than his external
appearance. Thus when a
candidate is shown stimuli
and asked to respond, his
emotional, attitudinal and
behavioral patterns
emerge very clearly. Since
the tests are conducted
under the constraints of
time, the candidates are
unable to mask their
response or to give a more

desirable response and

there lies the strength of
this technique. It is seen
that while many candidates
do well in the GTO and
Interview techniques, their
true personality comes out
in the psychological tests.
So in order to do well in
these tests, one hast to
Practice hard.
1. THEMATIC
APPERCEPTION TEST
(TAT)- In this , 12 pictures
are shown one by one and
you are supposed to write
stories based on these
pictures. The first picture
will appear for a 30
seconds and thereafter 4
minutes are allowed to
write the story. After 4
minutes again a picture will
be flashed for 30 seconds
and the series goes on
until the 12th slide is
shown.
PreparationThe most important thing
here is your perception.
The whole test is based on
that only. To clear this
test, sheer practice and
only practice will help you.
Download the set of
sample pictures for your
practice. Now, when you
start with it, you dont have

8/58

to go with the time limit.

For first one week, you
need to calm down your
mind and just observe the
picture for one minute and
then write a story taking 5
minutes. Do this carefully.
Observe the picture; Try
creating a positive
outcome of your story, no
matter how negative the
image is. However if the
image is neutral or normal,
no need to create a
negative scenario by
yourself and then try to
solve it, showing your
qualities. If the picture
doesn't demand such
scenario then why not
respond to it in a normal
manner? The stories here
should have three different
parts- Past, Present and
Future. Each of your
stories should have a
description- 10% past,
80% present and 10%
future. When you write the
story, try not to mention
directly that 'he/she' is
brave, courageous,
punctual.... instead write in
such a way that it is
evident in their action,
indirectly. For eg

Incorrect - He was

courageous and brave,

and saved the drowning
child.
Correct- He didnt
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

9/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

Correct- He didnt

even blink for a second,

jumped into the water and
swam the child across the
river and saved his life.
In the above mentioned
example, it is made clear
that your action should
speak for you and not
mere words should
describe you. The qualities
should be reflected in the
stories and not mentioned
directly.
Bottom line is- ACTION
SPEAK LOUDER THAN
WORDS.
After one week, start
practicing this test with
time restriction. Firstly
observe the picture for 25
seconds, think about the
story which will take about
0ne minute. Then start
writing your story. Most of
them make the drastic
mistake of writing the story
immediately the picture is
shown. If you do so, there
will be no proper flow of
thoughts and you might
not be able to present
your story in a systematic
manner. Also it will lead to
scribbles and poor
handwriting. Remember,
don't leave anything to
chance, give it your best
shot. Observe the picture,

http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

shot. Observe the picture,

think about the story,
frame it in your mind, and
then just go on writing it,
which will take just two
minutes. Your handwriting
must be legible. Hence you
have to practice a lot to be
able to write the story
properly. Write 2 sets of
TAT daily.
Blank slideFollowing are the points
to be kept in mind while
writing the blank story:1. Write down a happening
of your life, like the
marriage anniversary of
your parents, a picnic with
your family, an
adventurous outing with
your friends, a birthday
party that you organized
etc.
2. Do not create a problem
or a situation all by
yourself and then go on
solving it, describing about
the officer like qualities in
the story.
3. It is a blank slide and
when the assessors
haven't shown you or
given you a situation then
why do you want to create
it and give your solutions?
Just write a simple story, a

11/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

Just write a simple story, a

happy one with a joyful
conclusion.
4. Many of us have this
doubt that should we
prepare a story
beforehand or we just go
with the flow and think

about the story on the spot

and write in down there in
the TAT test?
5. You have the power of
deciding it. But what I
would suggest is, nothing
is to be left to chance. You
should prepare a nice
story, yet a simple one and
write it down at the time of
your testing in the SSB.
6. However, do not
prepare a story wherein
you use book language.
Do not try to use difficult
words in the story. The
language and the wording
should be so normal that
when the assessors read
it, they should find it
gelling with all the other
stories that you have
written in the answer
sheet. It should go with the
flow. Hence, you should
practice to write such a
story first, and then decide
which one to choose, so
that you can write it down
in the actual test.
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

12/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

7. One second thought

about it is that what if the
12th story which you have
already prepared
beforehand, does not fall
in line at all with the rest of
the stories you have
written in the test? What to
do in such cases. The
answer is , your rigorous
practice for months will
automatically help you in
creating up a good story n
the actual test.
8. That is why I emphasize
on practicing the tests.
Write and write as much as
you can. It will give you the
power of expression. Also,
it will improve your
handwriting and your
speed of writing.
Practice about 200 stories.
2. WORD ASSOCIATION
TEST (WAT) - In this, you
will be shown 60 words
one after the other and
are expected to make a
short sentence using the
word shown. Each word will
appear for 15 seconds in
which you have to see and
write a sentence. There is
a buzzer to indicate that
the word has changed.
First of all, I would like to
mention that here, in WAT,
dont go with the mindset
that you can mug up the
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

13/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

that you can mug up the

sentences and go and

write them in the SSB.
There are n numbers of
words and you dont even
know what will come there.
So the better thing to do is
practice. Download the set
of words and start
practicing. Here too, dont
start with the time
restriction. In the
beginning, just try to make
sentences which

are factual, based on

recent happenings

are positive

show your attitude

towards that word

reflect your own values

and beliefs
Here is what shouldnt
be written

Idioms and phrases

which lack originality of

your thoughts/imagination

sentences that tend to

preach

use of 'I', it reflects self-

centeredness

negative sentences

frequent references to

celebrities or known
figures
Use your imagination to
write the best sentence for
the given word. Think and
write. When you start with
the exercise, you will see
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

14/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

that it takes 2 minutes for

you to think about the
word and write a good
sentence. But trust me,
with practice; you will be
able to write the sentence
well before 15 seconds.
After 10 days start
practicing with the time
restriction. Keep on
practicing. And do two sets
of WAT daily.
3. SITUATION REACTION
TEST (SRT) - This test has
some situations to which
you need to present your
responses. There will be
60 situations given in a
booklet and you need to
write your responses in
one or two lines. This is a
test of common sense,
reasoning ability and
maturity. One learns to act
appropriately to situations
by virtue of experience
one gains in life. Here, if
you find difficulty in solving
one of the odd situations,
please do not skip it as it
gives a poor impression
that you have a habit of
avoiding situations and it
will reflect you not being
courageous enough to
solve the problems of life.
So, think and answer
carefully. Do not feel the
pressure, just be yourself
and give your responses.
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

15/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

Also apply your common

sense as some of the
situations dont need your
courage or honesty or
other OLQs, they just
need a simple answer. In
this test, from the start
itself, have the time
restriction and solve a set
of 60 situations every day.
Make sure that by the end
you should be able to write
responses to all the
situations easily. So you
need to practice that hard.
4. SELF DESCRIPTION
(SD)- This is a test
wherein you are supposed
to write about yourself as
the title of the test
describes itself. In this, you
need to write about
yourself keeping in mind 5
aspects. These aspects
are as follows:

What your parents

think about you?

What your teachers

think about you?

What your friends think

about you?

What you think about

yourself?

What kind of person

you would like to become?

Now remember, this is very
tricky. Most of you will find
this one easy as it
becomes super facile to
write about yourself when
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

16/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

write about yourself when

asked to do so. But you
need to keep it in mind
that the assessors are well
aware and they observe
and analyses each of your
answers/responses. So
dont go on bluffing and
bragging about yourself.
The point I'm trying to
make here is you should
be utmost neutral, humble,
polite, and down to earth.
Why??? Because, if you
write fancy stuff about
yourself here, that you are
a very hard working
person, a helpful person,
courageous and etc , the
first thing the assessors
are going to do is they are
going to match your
responses to the PIQ form
you have filled in. And if
for instance you have not
done good in your
educational background or
social life, then it puts a
question mark that why
have you written that you
are a hard working person
when your grades are
simply telling the truth? So
be truthful to yourself and
write accordingly to only
what has happened in
your life. Be bluntly truthful
and honest. Write this test
with application of your
mind. Be realistic in your
writing. This does not
require such a rigorous
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

17/58

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

require such a rigorous

practice but yes time and
again keep checking your
answers every time you
write and see if they are
matching or not.
That brings the end of our
PSYCHOLOGICAL
TESTING.

GROUP TESTING SERIES

- This is based on the
theory of Gestalt, wherein
the GTO looks at the
candidates performing in a
group, gradually singles
them out and gives a
closer look and finally
once again observes them
perform in the group.
There are a total of 9
tasks conducted by the
GTO. These are divides in
three phases:(a)Basic series- It
consists of Group
discussion(2 rounds),
Group Planning Exercise,
Progressive Group Task
and the Group Obstacle
Race.
(b)Confirmatory seriesIt consists of Half Group
Task, Lecturette, Individual
Obstacles and the
Command Task.

(c)Final series- consists

of Final Group Task.

of Final Group Task.

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

The point to understand is

that it is important to do
well in all the series and
more importantly in the
basic series. If you have
not done well in the basic
series the your chance of
getting recommended by
the GTO are very low. As I
said, first impression is the
last impression. However,
this does not mean that
having done well in the
basic series you can relax
in the other two. So give
your best shot and come
out with flying colors.
There are various tasks in
this testing. This are

clear in the minds of all the
candidates. Time allowed
here is 20 minutes. After
you are done with the first
discussion, you will be
given a second topic. But
this time there will be no
choice. You will have to
carry on the discussion on
the topic that GTO gives.
He might also give you two

that topic. In this task, you
are not expected to arrive

Exercise- This is the
second activity. Here, you
will be given some
problems on a model and
asked to firstly write then
their individual solutions
on a sheet of paper and
then discuss among
themselves to evolve a
common group plan. In this
you have to arrive at a
conclusion. This task is
conducted in 5 stages.
These are:I.

The GTO will explain

you a model made on a

wooden plank. At the end
of his explanation, you are
allowed to clarify your
doubts, if any.
II.

Now the GTO will read

a story from a card. Pay

careful attention to the
story. Do not try to write or
try to correlate with the
model as you may miss out
on the story.
After the GTO finishes the
story, he will allow you five
minutes to read the story
from the story cards which
will be placed on your
chairs and correlate with

the model. Make a mental

picture of all the features
and salient points given in
the story because after
minutes the story cards will
be taken back. You are
not permitted to write down
any points at this stage.
III.

Now the candidates

are asked to write their

individual solutions to the
various problems on a
sheet of paper. Time
allowed here is 10
minutes. After that, your
sheets will be taken back.
IV.

And now, the GTO

will ask the group to

nominate any one person
to explain the agreed
common plan of the group
to him.
Things to be paid
attention toi.

There will always be

four problems in this. One

will be of serious nature
like a man is bleeding
profusely and is
unconscious or a person
has suffered severe burns
or a person has fallen from
a running train. Such
problems should be
assigned first priority.
ii.

Then there will be

problems in which a large

number of people are in
danger or some public
property will be destroyed

property will be destroyed

if no action is taken
quickly. Such problems
must be given second
priority.
iii.

There will be

problems involving an
individual, like a girl is
abducted or a boy has
been kidnapped etc. Such
problems should be given
third priority.
iv.

There will be a fourth

problem like a gold chain

is lost or cows have
strayed in the jungle. They
should be given least
priority. However, you
should not leave this
problem just because it is
too small.
v.

The GTO will tell to

assume that there is no

mobile connectivity, hence
do not go on to solve the
problems by using the
mobile phones to inform
the police, office etc. You
are expected to get
yourself involved in
tackling the problems
though there is no harm in
taking the help of police,
fire brigades etc.
What is seen this?
i.

Your ability to grasp

the essentials of the given

situation.
ii.

Are you logical in your

approach?

approach?
iii.

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

Do you keep in mind

the aim or get swayed

away by the situation?
iv.

Are you logical in

prioritizing the problems?

v.

Do you observe and

identify all the obvious and

hidden resources available
to you?
vi.

Have you made

correct use of the

resources in solving the
problems?
vii.

Your written power of

expression.
Now, the important
points to be kept in
mind:i.

First identify the

problems and list them in

the order of priority in
which you would tackle
them.
ii.

Identify the various

resources, obvious and

hidden.
iii.

Write your solution for

each problem in the order

of priority. While writing the
solution also make rough
calculations about the
distances based on the
scale of the model and the
time it may take to reach
the place depending on
the vehicle/mode that is
being used. This way your
solution should be
practically possible.

practically possible.
iv.

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

After writing the

solutions for all the

problems, do mention that
you will all gather at a
point and proceed with the
activity for which you had
initially come (aim). Do not
forget the aim and make
sure that you achieve that
too.
v.

The written solution is

evaluated for 6
components namely,
grasps, aim, priority,
resources, time and
distance, and overall
solution.
vi.

Be prepared for a

heated discussion as this

is the competition stage of
group development and all
candidates will try to
dominate the discussion.
vii.

Try and initiate the

discussion as early as
possible.
viii.

Do not generalize all

the problems.
ix.

Be nice to others in

the group. Be humble and

polite.
x.

Do not keep looking at

the GTO. Keep a smiling

disposition and dont look
unduly worried.

(C) Progressive Group

Task- This is the first
practical test.Here there
are four obstacles which

are four obstacles which

the group has to cross in

40 minutes, by following
some rules. The
candidates need to cross
the obstacles with the help
of a helping materialsPlank, Balli, Ropes. You
need to make use of these
resources and take your
group to the finish line
across the obstacle. But
there are certain rules.
They are as follows:
i.Group rule- it implies
that all the members of the
group must have crossed
the obstacle before
anyone can go to the next
one.
ii.Distance rule- it implies
that any distance that is
more than 4 feet, must be
bridged and not jumped,
even if you are capable of
jumping.
iii.Color rule- The white
portion is inbound for the
candidates and the
helping material as well. If
it is painted red then
neither you nor the helping
material can touch it. If it is
painted blue or yellow,
only you van touch that
portion and not the helping
material.
iv. Rule or Rigidity- Two

iv. Rule or Rigidity- Two

rigid materials cannot be

tied together to form a
bridge or an extension.
v. Rule of Infinity- It
implies that the start line
and the finish line should
be imagined to be
extending to infinity on
either side. It means that
you cannot walk through
the sides of the task. Also
be careful not to step into
the area inside of the start
and finish line.
The GTO observes the
following

Your ability to grasp

the rules and conditions of

tackling the obstacles.

Are you logical in your

approach?

Do you have practical

work sense?

Are you able to use the

resources optimally?

Are you able to

overcome the frustration

and difficulties involved
while solving the obstacle?

Are you able to

Do not break any

rules. If you do, then

immediately admit it and
go back to the position
where you were before
breaking the rule.

(D) Group Obstacle

Race- here you are made
to race against the other
groups through a series of
6 obstacles. You need to
carry a load, its a tent,
rolled up to look like a
snake. That is why it is
also called as the Snake
Race.
I.

Once the group picks

up the snake, it should not

touch the ground before
crossing the finish line.
II.

The snake is not to be

shortened or folded in any

manner.

responsibility of carrying
the snake. Also help
others in crossing the
obstacles.

This is a group task

and not an individual one,

so try hard to take your
group to the finish line,

(E) Half Group TaskThis is just like the

Progressive Group Task,
the only difference is that
your group will be divided
into 2 sub-groups. Only
one single obstacle course
is to be crossed
here.There are certain
rules. They are as follows:
i.

Group rule- it implies

that all the members of the

group must have crossed
the obstacle before
anyone can go to the next
one.

implies that any distance

that is more than 4 feet,

(F) LecturetteIn This test, each

candidate will be required
to deliver a short talk for
three minutes to the rest of
the group on any one of
the four topics. The GTO

the four topics. The GTO

will have as many numbers

of cards as the candidates
in the group. Each card will
have four topics on it. The
first candidate as per
numerical sequence will be
called to pick up the
topmost card and go a
little away from the group
and prepare for about
three minutes. After three
minutes, or earlier, if you
are prepared then you can
come back, handover the
card to the GTO and
deliver your talk. As soon
as the 1st candidate is
ready to give the speech,
the second candidate must
pick up the topmost card
from the rostrum and go
for preparation. As soon
as two and a half minutes
are over for the first
candidate, the GTO will
ring a bell. This is an
indication that the
candidate must wind up
the talk. When three
minutes are over the GTO
will ring two bells. With this
the first candidate will sit
down with the rest of the
group, the second
candidate will come back,
handover the card to the
GTO and start with his
talk.. This way each
candidate will get three
minutes to prepare and
three minutes to deliver

three minutes to deliver

the talk on the topic of

his/her choice.
When the first candidate is
preparing for, the GTO will
ask the rest to briefly
introduce themselves in
about 10 to 15 seconds.
He will specify as to what
all is expected from you
and depending on what he
asks, introduce yourself
briefly. Normally, he will
ask you your name, your
father's occupation, school
in which you studied
hobbies etc. The first
candidate who is preparing
for his topic will be asked
to first introduce
himself/herself and then
begin the talk.
Now, of the four topics,
one each will be of higher
level and lower level and
two topics will be of
average level. If you can
speak on a higher level
topic then its well and
good. If not at least try to
attempt average level
topic. However, remember
it is better to speak sense
on a lower level topic than
choosing a higher level
topic and talk rubbish.

i.

Awareness about

developments in the
environment which is a

part of the reasoning

ability.
ii.

Your ability to organize

your own thoughts.

iii.

Power of expression.

iv.

Self-confidence.

v.

Ability to influence the

group.
vi.

Liveliness.

vii.

Determination to

remain focused and

delivers the content under
a very stressful condition.
viii.

Courage to face the

group.
ix.

Mental stamina to

sustain the full duration of

three minutes.
Your approach towards
this test:a.

Dont get bogged

down when you see the

topics. Be calm; select the
topic of your own choice.
b.

Always divide your

content into various

sections as that will show
that you are methodical
and organized. Now,
simply follow the rule about
what to speak- Introduction
about your topic, the
causes or reasons, the
solutions, and the
conclusion. Or it could bean introduction,
advantages,
disadvantages, your own
opinion and conclusion.

c.

Choose a topic you

are conversant with. It is

not important to speak on
a high level topic.
Remember, awareness in
not the only attribute that
is seen through this
activity. Even if you speak
very well on an average or
low level topic, you will be
able to impress.
d.

Remain composed

while speaking.
e.

Speak slowly because

three minutes are very

long when you are
standing in front of the
group.
f.

Do not look at the

GTO as you will feel

intimidated.
g.

Look at your friends

while speaking and do not

look up or sideways.
h.

Do not use your

hands too much while

speaking.
i.

Do not lean on the

Podium/rostrum.
j.

Do not exceed your

time and also do not finish

abruptly.
(G) Individual
ObstaclesThis is a test most of the
candidates are looking for.
This is a fun filled activity.
It also shows the Josh you
have to perform. Here, the
GTO will first brief the
candidates and thereafter
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

38/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

candidates and thereafter

show each obstacle one
by one and explain what is
required to be done.
There will be a total of 10
obstacles to be tackled
individually in three
minutes. Obstacles will be
numbered from 1 to 10
and the number of
obstacles also indicates
the points you will get if
you do it successfully.
Thus, if you tackle
successfully all the 10
obstacles in the allotted
time of three minutes you
will get 55 points. The
obstacles are placed at
random and you are also
at liberty to do these
obstacles in the sequence
you like. In case, you take
too long on any particular
obstacle, you may leave it,
go to the next and come
back to it later if time
permits. And in case you
happen to complete all the
10 obstacles successfully
and still left with sometime,
you can repeat the
obstacles and depending
upon which one you
repeat you will get those
many extra points.
However, you must
remember that you should
not repeat unless you
have completed all the 10
obstacles successfully and
even while repeating, you

http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

39/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

even while repeating, you

are not permitted to repeat
an obstacle more than
once.
Following are 10
obstacles:1.The Single Ramp- you
are expected to come
running from a little
distance and run over the
ramp and land on the sand
pit.
2. The Double Barrel
Jump- you are expected
to come running from a
little distance and jump
over the two drums
lengthwise buried in the
ground. While tackling this
obstacle remember that
you should not touch the
drums as it will be painted
red and red color is out of
bounds. For lady
candidates a single drum
is placed adjacent to the
double drum. They are
expected to jump over only
the single drum.
3.The Balancing BeamIn this there are three
wooden beams placed one
after the other in a
sequence at a height of
roughly three feet. You are
expected to climb onto any
one of the beam from both
side and walk through

http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

40/58

5/1/2015

side and walk through

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

them and get down from

the other side. Please
remember that, you cannot
get down in between.
4. The Screen Jump- In
this, there is a ramp similar
to the one in obstacle
number 1, and a red
screen suspended in front.
You are required to come
running from a distance,
run over the ramp and
jump over the red screen
without touching the
screen. Ahead of the
screen, there will be a
sand pit to prevent any
injury. In this you need
momentum and hence
must run some distance
and should not stop at the
ramp. In case you happen
to touch the screen it will
fall down. Do no waste
your time in putting it back.
Move on to the next
obstacle. The ground man
will put the screen back
and you can take another
attempt if time permits. For
lady candidates the screen
is placed at a lesser
height.

5. The Burma Bridge- In

this obstacle, there are two
ropes fixed parallel to each
other at a height of
roughly 15 feet above the
ground. There are two

http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

ground. There are two

ladders on either side or

also two ropes hanging on
either side which you can
use to go up. You can
either use the rope or the
ladder to go up. Upon
reaching the top, you are
expected to hold the top
rope and walk on the
bottom rope. Once you
cross the distance, you
can once again either use
the ladder or the rope to
come down.
6. The Tarzan's Swing- In
this there is a platform with
a ladder at about 8 feet
height and a rope hanging
from the top. You are
expected to climb the
ladder and reach the
platform. Upon reaching
there, the free end of the
rope is handed over to you
by the grounds man. You
are required to hold the
rope as high as possible
and take a swing like a
Tarzan and land beyond a
particular point without
touching the ground. The
point is indicated by two
red bricks placed on either
side. An imaginary line
joining the two red bricks is
the area of clearance. In
this, you must stretch
yourself high and take a
strong grip of the rope
before taking the swing. As
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

42/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

before taking the swing. As

soon as you take the
swing folds both your legs
upward or else your feet
will invariably touch the
ground.
7. The Double Platform
Jump- In this there are
two platforms; one at a
height of about 10 feet
and the other at 5 feet. In
front of the 2 platforms is a
sand pit. You are required
to climb up to the higher
platform using the ladder
like bars and jump onto
the second platform and
finally onto the sand pit.
While this looks fairly
simple, you need to land
on your toes or else you
may trip and fall down.
Also, the three sides of the
structure are painted red
and invariably candidates
touch the red color. Be
sure not to touch any red
portion.
8. The Double Ditch- In
this there are two ditches;
first a long one and then a
short one. These ditches
are separated by a flat
surface in between. The
longer ditch has a rope
hanging in the middle. You
are expected to come
running from a little
distance, take a jump and
hold the rope. Due to

http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

43/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

inertia you will swing

further. On reaching the
flat surface, you must
leave the rope and land.
Thereafter, take second
jump and cross the smaller
ditch. Remember, you are
not permitted to first take
the rope and then swing;
you have to come running
from a distance and take a
jump to grasp the rope.
For lady candidates, this
obstacle is optional which
means that if this obstacle
is not attempted no
adverse view is taken.
9. The Commando WalkIn this there is a narrow
plank with a victory stand
in the middle fixed at a
height of about 10 feet. On
either side, there is a
ladder. You can climb the
ladder from either side,
walk on the narrow plank,
climb on the victory stand
and come down from the
other side. The sides of
the ramp and the victory
stands are painted red.
Hence, do not touch these
sides and walk straight on
it. Do not look down.

10.The Tiger's Leap- In

this there is a platform with
a ladder at height of about
10 feet and a rope is
suspended in front. You
http://www.jobsfundaz.com/2015/03/complete-preparation-for-ssb.html

44/58

5/1/2015

Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

are required to go up the

platform, take a leap like a
tiger, catch hold of the
rope and come down. If
you have arm strength this
is fairly easy. Hence,
practice ropes and do a lot
of pushups to develop arm
strength. For lady
candidates this obstacle is
optional.

(H) Command Task- In

this task, each candidate
is required to do one task
similar to the HGT or PGT.
The GTO will call the
candidates one by one at
random. He will normally
walk with you for some
distance and do some
casual talking before
finally taking you to the
task. You will be
designated as a
commander for the task
and can choose two team
members from within the
group who will help you in
doing the task. The team
members should not
interfere or give their own
suggestions as the
responsibility of doing the
task is that of the
Commander (YOU). You
will normally get 15-20
minutes to complete the
task.
What is seen in this
particular Task?

together and asked to
solve an obstacle just like
the HGT. Here the GTO
will get confirmed about
your abilities.
After you are done, he will
conclude the session and
ask you if there are any
questions. First of all, you
should not ask any
questions. Your work was
to perform at the test,
which you did so refrain
from asking silly questions.
However, you may ask
professional questions like
how is the service life etc.
? Just be sensible.

PERSONAL INTERVIEWThe interview process

followed at the SSB is
based on Behavioral
Interview Technique. Here,
the interviewer establishes
a friendly association with
the candidate through his
informality and then
probes your past
behaviors to extrapolate
your likely behavior in the
future.
The whole Interview is
based on the most
important form you fill in
the beginning of the SSBPESONAL INFORMATION
QUESTIONNAIRE (PIQ).
He heavily banks on it.
You should not make tail
claims in the interview if it
is not reflected in your

interviewer will welcome

you and ask you to take
your seat. Greet him with a
smiling composure and sit
only when you are asked
to. He will ask you how was
your journey, how is the
stay at SSB, the food and
all. It is done just to make
you comfortable, and bring
down your nervousness.
2. Family background- In
this he will throw a ball of
questions at you. This is
going to be a rapid fire
round wherein you will be
asked 15-20 questions at
once. You are expected to
answer these questions
keeping in mind what all
has been asked. For
instance, he may ask you,
Please begin by telling me
about your family. Your
parents, sister, brother,
grandparents etc. what
does your father and
mother do? What is the
annual income of your
family? How do you spend
time with the members of
family? Who are you close
to and why? Whom do you
approach when in difficult
situations or problems?
What do you like and
dislike in your siblings?
How do you meet your
monetary requirement?
How do you spend it?"

How do you spend it?"Complete Preparation for SSB | JobsFundaz

Have a systematic
approach. Remember, he
has asked you to tell about
your family. So tell him
everything about your
family. Start from your
father, talk about him like
his name, occupation,
income etc. Then about
your mother and then
siblings and grandparents.
Then tell him how do you
spend time together, your
routine. How you help your
family members. Now, just
be normal and say that
you love your family and
everyone equally. Do not
go on saying that i dislike
so and so activity of my
sister or brother. This will
bring your impression
down directly. See the
idea is, he wants to know
how is your behavior in a
small organization such as
your own family, so that he
can figure out what will be
your behavior in the
organization of a huge
scale, i.e. the Army. If you
keep cribbing about your
family members then how
can he expect you to gel
up with others in the
Army? So, avoid
complaining about your
siblings and just say that
everything is good. Then
talk about your pocket

money/ earnings. Wisely

explain him how you spend
your money and on what
all you spend it? Be
organized at every step, it
will reflect your systematic
approach.
3. Educational
background- Again a
rapid fire round will be
there. He will be interested
in knowing about your
educational qualifications.
How you performed at
various grades. Why is the
score high/low? What all
are your favorite subjects
and why? Which subjects
do hate? Who is your
favorite teacher and who is
not and why? How was
your education financed?
Who did it? etc. Start with
your schooling in 10th
onwards. Tell him all the
answers without any
hesitation. Speak the truth.
Accept bluntly if you have
scored lees marks then
you didnt study for it. If
there is any other reason,
you may state it straight
forward. Do not give
excuses. Dont go on
telling him that you didnt
like some teacher. As a
matter of fact, you should
never say it. The answer is
very simple. The subject in
which you have scored the

highest becomes your

favorite and the one in
which you have got least
marks becomes the poor
subject.
4. Social backgroundHere, he will ask you about
your hobbies, interests,
friends, co curricular
activities etc. Tell them
about it. Do not
unnecessarily start
explaining, until asked to
do so. Simply state
whatever has been asked.
5.Stress Situation- Now,
this will be a little bit
heated up. He will through
at you a situation where in
your stress handling
capabilities will be
checked. For instance, he
may ask you that, you are
going on a walk, and
suddenly you see a
person lying unconscious
on the ground. What will
you do?" Depending on
your answers he will try to
pressurize you. Following
demonstrated
conversation may help
you.
He- what will you do in this
situation?
You- I will take him to the
hospital?
He- how?
You- in an auto

You- in an auto
rickshaw/bus.
He- no public transport is
available because of the
strike.
You- I will take the help of
passing vehicles.
He- there is no one
around. What will you do?
You- I will pick him up and
immediately take him to my
house, and ring up the
doctor.
He- the mobile network
isnt working, now what?
So this is how he will try to
push you. But do not panic
or give up. He knows that
there is an answer to
whatever he asks, so you
just think about it and
answer it with confidence.
6. Casual talk- Now he will
conclude by asking you if
you have any questions to
ask. Please say, NO SIR.
Dont go on asking
questions. He will wish you
luck and you are required
to leave.
Apart from all this, he
may ask some
questions in between:-

Do you have a

girlfriend?

Do you drink/smoke?

Why?

Why do you want to

join Army/ Air force/ Navy?

What are your

What are your

strengths and
weaknesses?

What would you like to

improve in yourself?
All these questions need
to be answered honestly.
Be prepared, as he will try
to probe you. Be truthful
and sensible.

BOARD CONFERENCEThe last day of your stay,

your chest numbers in a
numerical sequence. You
will find a U shaped

When you enter the hall,
greet everyone. They will
ask you simple questions
like how was your stay at
the SSB? How was the
food? Which all places did
you visit? Which test did
you like the most?
