TITLE: ENERGY AND MOMENTUM RELATIONS IN HYDRAULIC JUMPS
OBJECTIVES
Experimentally verify the concepts and equations for, conjugate depths and energy
dissipation in hydraulic jumps
Plot the Specific Energy Curve of the system
Compare experimental data with theoretical values and account for discrepancies
METHODOLOGY
Materials
- Open Channel Flow Simulator
- Sluice Gate and/or Rectangular Weir
Procedures
1. Position the sluice gate and/or weir in the open channel.
2. Start the Open Channel Flow Simulator.
3. Allow the system to reach steady-state flow.
4. Adjust the discharge and sluice gate opening to create a hydraulic jump.
5. Measure the water depths before the weir, after the weir and after the hydraulic
jump.
6. Use the volumetric tank to measure the discharge in the channel.
7. Repeat for different at least 3 different discharges.

TITLE: ANALYSIS OF OPEN-CHANNEL FLOW TRANSITIONS USING THE SPECIFIC
ENERGY DIAGRAM
OBJECTIVES
Experimentally verify the concepts and equations for flow transitions, critical depth,
supercritical flow and subcritical flow by observing an open channel flow over a bump
Plot the Specific Energy Curve of the system
Compare experimental data with theoretical values and account for discrepancies
METHODOLOGY
Materials
- Open Channel Flow Simulator
- Trapezoidal bump (see Figure below)

Procedures
1. Position the bump in the channel.
2. Start the Open Channel Flow Simulator.
3. Allow the system to reach steady-state flow.
4. Adjust the discharge to create a supercritical or subcritical flow.
5. Measure the water depths before the bump, along the bump, and after the bump.
6. Use the volumetric tank to measure the discharge in the channel.
7. Repeat for different at least 3 different trials.
