PDM31 : ROBUST DESIGN
SEM: III

TIME: 3.00 Hrs

MAX MARKS: 100

Note: (1) Answer Any Five Full Questions.

(2) Use o f statistical tables, OA tables permitted.

1.a) Discuss the Taguchi quality system Explain the various stage of On-line quality 10
control
b) With the help of P-diagram briefly explain the factor influencing the response of the 10
product.
2. In a furniture industry, the surface finish of a graded lumber is an important 20
characteristic. There are three factors to be tested each at two levels for their impact
on surface finish. Factor D is the type of wood: Oak (Level 1) or Pine (Level 2), Factor
E is the rate of feed: 2m/min (Level 1) or 4m/min (Level 2), Factor F is the depth of
cut: 1m (Level 1) or 3m (Level 2). For each treatment combination three replications
are carried out using eight run experiments. Table 1 shows the surface finish data for
24 experiments

3. A health conscious engineer goes to a local fitness center three times a week for 20
physical exercise. There are two different routes he can take from his home to the
center. He wondered which route was faster and also weather rush-hour traffic
significantly affect the travel time. He decided to resolve this issue by performing a
four-run experiments, replicated three times. The design matrix is given in the
Table 2 where factor A is route traveled (1 or 2) and factor B is weather travel is during
rush hour (No or Yes). The completed report from the experiment is in Table 3.
