PhD Program Timeline

When the course requirements are completed with a minimum GPA of 2.75/4.00,
the student is allowed to write a qualification exam.
The qualification exam has two parts and is explained in detail below.
After successful completion of the qualification exam, a thesis progress committee
(TPC) is formed (TK: tez izleme komitesi) and the student is required to prepare a
thesis proposal and defend it before TPC in 6 months.
If the thesis proposal is approved by the TPC, the student registers for MM 700
Special Topics course and the progress of the student is followed by the TPC by
formal meetings held at the end of each semester.
Information on PhD Qualification Exam
The qualification exam has two parts. The first part (administered by the Department of
Mechanical Engineering) is a general written exam (3 hours) covering the topics of
undergraduate curriculum. Each student selects one of the following four fields for the
general exam and receives 5 equally weighted questions from each topic listed under that
field:
A. Thermal-Fluids Systems and Energy
Mathematics (Analytical and Numerical)
Thermodynamics
Heat Transfer
Fluid Mechanics
Any course from fields B, C and D except Mathematics.
B. Dynamics, Control and Mechatronics
Mathematics (Analytical and Numerical)
System Dynamics and Control
Dynamics
Theory of Machines
Any course from fields A, C and D except Mathematics.

C. Solid Mechanics and Design

Mathematics (Analytical and Numerical)
Statics
Mechanics of Materials
Machine Design
Any course from fields A, B and D except Mathematics and Mechanics of Materials.
D. Materials and Manufacturing
Mathematics (Analytical and Numerical)
Materials Science
Manufacturing
Mechanics of Materials
Any course from fields A, B and C except Mathematic and Mechanics of Materials.

The student must receive a minimum of 60/100 to advance to the 2nd part of the
qualification process. The general exams are held twice a year. If a student fails the
general exam twice, he/she will be required to take 3 undergraduate courses and pass all
of them with a minimum grade of B3 before he/she is allowed to take the exam for the third
time.
In the 2nd part, a formal qualification exam committee is formed and the committee
administers a written and an oral exam according to the regulations of Graduate School of
Science and Engineering (Fen Bilimleri Enstits).
Journal Paper Requirement for Thesis Defense
According to the departmental regulation, each doctoral candidate must have a paper
(from his/her thesis work) published or accepted with minor revision by a SCI-Expanded
journal before defending his/her thesis.

10

4. Seminar Course (MM 698/MM 799)

Students must present a formal seminar that is open to public. The seminar content should
be relevant to the thesis/dissertation topic of a student, therefore the seminar course
cannot be undertaken before the approval of thesis/dissertation proposal. A seminar
presentation must demonstrate the progress in students research, for that reason it needs
to be carried out only after substantial amount of research work has been done.
Registered students must attend at least 70% of the presentations, otherwise they will fail
based on attendance. Students are expected to follow the seminar preparation guidelines
when preparing their presentation.

5. Thesis Proposal and Special Topics Courses (MM 605/MM 700)

MS degree program students can submit their thesis proposal as early as their 2nd
semester in the program. PhD degree students can submit their proposal only after the
successful completion of qualifying requirements. Both MS and PhD students can register
for Special Topics course offered by their thesis supervisor after the approval of their
proposal by the Graduate School of Science and Engineering. The special topics course
must be taken every term until the thesis defense.

11

Scientific Preparation Program

Students with an undergraduate degree different from the Mechanical Engineering or
Aerospace Engineering departments are required to complete the scientific preparation
program. Courses need to be undertaken are decided by the Departmental Academic
Board and then the Graduate School of Science and Engineering are informed with these
courseload that the student needs to complete. Scientific Preparation Program consists of
at most 5 courses, which are 2nd and 3rd year core courses of the department as below:
MM 203 Statics
MM 204 Dynamics
MM 205 Thermodynamics I
MM 208 Mechanics of Materials
MM 209 Materials Science
MM 214 Manufacturing Engineering
OM 332 Vehicle Component Design
MM 305 Fluid Mechanics
MM 307 Design of Machine Elements
MM 306 Heat Transfer
MM 309 Theory of Machines
MM 324 System Dynamics and Control
MM 340 Mechanical Vibrations
Students in Scientific Preparation Program must complete the selected undergraduate
level courses in addition to the courses required by the degree program. These
undergraduate courses will be automatically assigned to the students and there is no need
for petition regarding this issue.

MM 698
SEMINAR PREPARATION GUIDELINES
General:

Each graduate student must prepare an abstract about his/her thesis proposal and send
this abstract to the seminar coordinator one week before the seminar lecture.
Abstract should not exceed 500 words. In this document, the title, objective and scope of
the thesis should be given. The method that you would like to use and the aim that you
would like to reach during your thesis studies should be clearly presented. You can add
figures and graphics that can draw attention of the prospective audience.
The duration for seminar presentation is 20 minutes.
Time allowed for questions and discussion after the presentation is 10 minutes.
Presentation with an average number of 20-25 slides is advised to be prepared. (It can vary
according to the content)

Content:

1st Slide: Include the title of the study, name and surname of the student and the
advisor/supervisor.
2nd Slide: Provide the content of the Seminar (Table of Contents or Outline)
Introduction: Information about the thesis problem, literature survey, purpose and scope
should be given. Your literature review must be mainly based on information from the
Science Citation Index journals.
Method: Theory and/or experimental methods should be explained.
Results: If there are, the results of the preliminary studies should be given. The
experiment and/or simulation results should be presented in this section in graphical and
table format.
General Results: The fundamental results of the studies should be presented in this
section.
Further studies: Future studies should be summarized.
References: The list of the references should be given in this section.

Format:

Give single idea/info about your work in each slide and avoid giving unnecessary
information.
Be careful in using 6-8 lines in each slide and 6-8 words in each line. DO NOT FILL UP
THE SLIDE WITH PARAGRAPHS OF WRITTEN INFORMATION.
Try to use figures and graphics to present your work and ideas in your slides.
Use few and clear sentences and keywords in the slides.
Chose different colors for the text and for the background of the slides.
