Construction

What are the details of this project?

Students will be required to build and maintain a community garden, in doing this
they will explore alternative avenues for garden construction through
incorporating a minimum of two recycled materials within the garden design. The
project will run from April 1st until October 1st 2017. Students will have April and
May to construct the garden and upon completion one credit will be earned.
Following the construction students will then be required to plant the garden and
maintain it providing brief weekly updates to their teacher. A near by community
league will be allotting land for students to use and will have topsoil, compost,
hand and garden tools for students to use along with a seventy five dollar credit
to a local hardware store. Prerequisites for this project are AGR1050: Plant
Propagation, CON1120: Product Management, and supporting courses are
AGR3000: Agriculture Safety, HCS2020: First Aid/ CPR with AED, and HCS3000:
Workplace Safety Systems.
What are the attitudes, skills and knowledge that will be enhanced and extended by completing this project?

What are the safety concerns for this project?

Students will be working with hand or power tools and potentially with fertilizers,
paint and other chemicals; proper PPE must be worn whenever required, students
are expected to follow safe work practices at all times.

CTS Project Template 2013

What will be needed to accomplish this project?

Students are expected to spend 75 hours in total for this project (25 per credit). It
will also be necessary to meet with the community league in order to see where
the gardens location and tools will be. In addition the community league has some
hand and garden tools available to students free of charge. For this project the
community league has teamed up with a local hardware store and each student
will receive a seventy-five dollar credit, which they are able to use towards
garden supplies, seeds, building materials etc.. Students are encouraged to use
recycled materials whenever possible, and a minimum of two are required within
the project. If there are any financial concerns beyond the allocated seventy-five
dollars students are advised to speak with Mr. Gartner, as he will be able to
provide guidance on alternative cost saving strategies.
