TheNoonDayProjectwillallowstudentstocollaboratewithstudentsaroundtheworldtoapply
theconceptsofrighttrianglesandtrigonometrytosolvearealworldproblem.

Inthislesson,studentsfocusontheconceptualbasisforthetrigonometricratiosthrough
examinationofhistoricalandmodernapplicationsofusingthemeasuresknownaboutoneright
triangletosolveforcorrespondingpartsofasimilarrighttriangle(GeorgiaStandards.org)

Inthistask,studentsexaminethemathematicsthatEratosthenesusedtomakehiscalculations
oftheEarthscircumferenceandexplorefurtherthemathematicsdevelopedfromthe
relationshipsheused.

Theonlineprojectallowsstudentsfromdifferentlatitudesoftheearthtosharemeasurement
data,useaspreadsheettomakecomparisons,andthenreplicateandsharetheirresults.Using
thisdata,andthepropertiesofsimilartriangles,studentswilldevelopameasurementfor
circumferenceoftheEarthusingmethodssimilartoEratosthenes.
