After reading Nine Ideas about Language by Harvey Daniels, choose two of his nine i
deas about language that particularly apply to you or your family.
Explain why or how each idea applies to you or your family.
Provide at least one specific example or personal experience for each idea.
Speakers of all languages employ a range of styles and a set of sub-dialects
or jargons:
Being largely into geek culture and other subcultures that are generally highly co
mputer savvy, I have learned that there is a huge amount of jargon involved in b
asic internet discourse. A great deal of terms and phrases are expected knowledg
e and reading information on many social networks can be confusing without at le
ast a basic knowledge of the commonly used jargon. As an example, this is a list
of specific slang relevant to just one single very popular website called reddi
t (Edited from a list at http://www.quora.com/):
TIL - Today I Learned.
DAE - Does Anyone Else.
AMA - Ask Me Anything
karma - upvotes minus downvotes.
?_? - "look of disapproval - used to show shock/disbelief/jealousy
circlejerk - "A group discussion or activity between like-minded individuals tha
t validates mutual biases or goals in a non-confrontational environment."
throwaway account - accounts people make when confessing to a sin, and don't wan
t to be traced.
FTFY = Fixed That For You.
Hivemind - named because Reddit's majority of users tend to follow clearly and i
ntensely about one issue to an effect that it seems like Reddit is a collective
mind on certain issues, expressing it by downvoting certain ideas to oblivion. I
t is used as a negative term, trying to indicate the conformity or closemindedne
ss of Redditors on those issues. Related to circlejerking.
Orangered - a comment reply or message, indicated by the orange/red envelope at
the top right of your browser
Value judgments about languages and/or dialects are matters of taste:

This one used to affect me greatly having grown up in the midwest and having a r
ather strong accent when I was younger. Moving here in Washington just served to
made my accent extremely obvious, as for years I still pronounced it as Warshing
ton which got me made fun of quite often. People often assumed I was less intelli
gent, and made odd assumptions such as thinking I grew up on a farm and enjoyed
country music. None of these things have any real link to the dialect I used, bu
t are common stereotyped assumptions.
