The AC system operates at 115 Volt, 3 phase, 400 cycles per second.
The left and right systems are independent and are normally not
interconnected.
The APU or the EXT Power can power both left and right systems.
The AC Crosstie Relay can automatically close to allow one electrical system to
power the opposite electrical system in the event of an inflight engine driven
generator failure.
The Generator Buses are the main distribution buses to each system. NEXT >

There are 3 identical generators installed on the MD-80. The engine driven generators are
driven by a Constant Speed Drive. The APU generator is directly driven by the APU without a special drive transmission.
Any 1 generator is capable of supplying adequate power to all aircraft systems.
Minimum dispatch is with 2 operating generators. If the APU generator is used as 1 of the
normal generators - extra fuel must be planned for the flight.
Generator output frequency is determined by the generator drive speed. The APU fuel
control determines the APU generator speed. The engine generator drive speed is
governed by a CSD.
Lets begin by covering the operation of the CSD units - - NEXT >

There is one CSD oil temperature gauge and one guarded disconnect switch for
each CSD.
The CSD disconnect switches are momentary type - and can energize a solenoid
to disconnect the CSD. The engine should be running at over 25% N2 to

The normal display mode of these gauges displays the temperature of the oil as
it comes out of the CSD. This is called the outlet temperature and is read
on the inner scale of the gauge.
Normally both CSD temperatures should be similar.
To display the rise temperature - push the button and read the outer scale on
these gauges. The rise temperature is the difference in oil temperature from
the time it leaves the oil cooler to the time it leaves the CSD. NEXT >

CSD
CSD OIL
COOLER
The CSD generates heat as it operates. The highest temperature oil leaves the
CSD enroute to the oil cooler. The temperature of this oil is displayed as
outlet on the CSD gauge. NOTE: This oil is completely separate from the engine
oil.
The CSD oil cooler is an air cooled radiator, located behind the fan (1st set of
blades) on the engine. The oil cooler is located on the bottom of the engine.
The difference in measured oil temperature is called the RISE temperature.
The CSD gauge will display RISE temperature as long as you press the PUSH
FOR RISE button. NEXT >

Using the inner scale - oil temperatures are acceptable up to the yellow arc.
If the outlet oil temperature reaches the yellow arc the pilot can relieve the CSD
by turning the generator switch to OFF. This allows the CSD to operate
without a load.
If the CSD outlet oil temperature reaches the red arc - and does not come down
by unloading the generator - the pilot is will disconnect the CSD.
A CSD disconnect can only be reset by maintenance. NEXT >

When the rise button is pressed and held down - the gauges will both display
the rise temperature. If the rise temperature exceeds the yellow line (set at
11.2 degrees centigrade), the pilot is to make a note in the maintenance
logbook - to require servicing of the CSD oil at the next stop.
Usually a high RISE temperature indicates that the CSD oil tank is either low
on oil quantity or the oil tank has been overfilled. NEXT >

Here the left CSD oil is hot - you have unloaded the generator to help the CSD
oil cool down by reducing the work-load on the CSD. Your efforts have not
resulted in a reduction of CSD oil temperature - so - you will disconnect the
CSD.
You should start the APU as soon as possible in these situations to provide a
second generator.
First - open the red guard to expose the switch. Then hold the momentary
disconnect switch up until the voltage & frequency drop off on the volt/freq.

Hold the switch up until the voltage and frequency from this generator drop to

If the CSD should refuse to disconnect - it will probably continue to get more
hot.
The CSD is driven by a drive shaft that can shear if it receives enough stress.

Now the LEFT GCR is reset; and will stay reset unless the Left Engine Fire Handle is pulled
out - or until a left system electrical fault causes the GCR to trip open. Remember that
the RESET switch position is momentary (spring loaded).
Now that the GCR is closed - it should stay closed - and during engine start this generator
will generate volts & freqs.
The generator is not spinning is this example - so it is still gray colored. We will color a
generator red when it develops A.C. electrical power.

Here you can see the engine is not running - the generator is not developing power - even
though the Generator Control Relay is closed.
The Generator Relay (GR) will be open whenever the Generator switch is not in the ON

The GR delivers the generators power to the LEFT GENERATOR BUS..

When the Left Engine Driven Generator is applied - the Left APU Relay opens.
An engine driven generator has priority to automatically power the respective electrical system
- over the APU, EXT PWR, or ACTR.. The APU remains available - but not used.
If all electrical sources are available and all electrical control panel switches are in the ON
position - the automatic priority system will apply power: 1)from the respective engine
generator; 2) from the APU; 3) from the EXT PWR; 4) from the ACTR. NEXT >

generator to
power both
electrical
systems.
Only one
annunciator
light comes on
in this example
- the R GEN

The galley power
is shutoff
during an AC

If desired - the
APU can be
operated during
the takeoff with both APU
electrical
switches in the
ON position.
This procedure
provides the
APU as a backup electrical
source.
If an engine
generator fails
during the
takeoff - the
APU will pick
up the load.
