Unit 63: Electrical Power

Task 1 Fault Free Three Phase Systems (P1.1)

This task involves solving problems in fault free three phase systems. The supply in
each section is a Three Phase 415v 50Hz balanced supply.
Note that all calculations require the use of J notation.
a) Table 1 shows the load for one phase of a three phase Star connected balanced
load. Use your allocated values from the table to calculate the following:
i.
Phase Impedance
ii.
Phase Voltage
iii.
Phase Current
iv.
Line Current
v.
Power Factor
b) Table 2 shows the load for one phase of a three phase Delta connected balanced
load. Use your allocated values from the table to calculate the following:
i.
Phase Impedance
ii.
Phase Voltage
iii.
Phase Current
iv.
Line Current
v.
Power Factor
c) Table 3 shows three loads connected as a three phase Delta connected
unbalanced load. Note that R1, X1 is the L1 L2 (Red-Yellow) load; R2, X2 is the
L2 L3 (Yellow-Blue) load; R3, X3 is the L3 L1 (Blue-Red) load.
Use your allocated values from the table to calculate the following:
i.
Phase Impedances
ii.
Phase Currents
iii.
Line Currents
d) Table 3 shows three loads connected as a three phase Star connected
unbalanced load. Note that R1, X1 is the L1 N (Red-Neutral) load; R2, X2 is the
L2 N (Yellow-Neutral) load, R3, X3 is the L3 N (Blue-Neutral) load.
Use your allocated values from the table to calculate the following:
i.
Phase Impedances
ii.
Phase Currents
iii.
Line Currents
iv.
Neutral Current

Unit 63: Electrical Power

This task involves solving problems in faulted three phase systems. The supply in each
section is a Three Phase 415v 50Hz balanced supply.
You will be allocated a set of loads from Table 3 to be used to answer all sections.
Note that all calculations require the use of J notation.
a) Table 3 shows three loads connected as a three phase Star connected
unbalanced load. Note that R1, X1 is the L1 N (Red-Neutral) load; R2, X2 is the
L2 N (Yellow-Neutral) load, R3, X3 is the L3 N (Blue-Neutral) load.
Due to a fault the Yellow Phase is disconnected from the supply.
Use your allocated values from the table to calculate the following:
i.
Phase Impedances
ii.
Phase Currents
iii.
Line Currents
iv.
Neutral Currents
b) Table 3 shows the loads for a three phase Delta connected unbalanced load.
Note that R1, X1 is the Red-Yellow load; R2, X2 is the Yellow-Blue load, R3, X3
is the Blue-Red load.
Due to a fault the Yellow Phase is disconnected from the supply.
Use your allocated values from the table to calculate the following:
i.
Phase Impedance
ii.
Line Voltage
iii.
Phase Current
iv.
Line Current
c) Table 3 shows three loads connected as a three phase Star connected
unbalanced load. Note that R1, X1 is the L1 N (Red-Neutral) load; R2, X2 is the
L2 N (Yellow-Neutral) load, R3, X3 is the L3 N (Blue-Neutral) load.
Due to a fault the load Star point is disconnected from the supply neutral.
State Millmans Theorem as applied to the loss of neutral in a three phase Star
connected load.
Use your allocated values from the table to calculate the following:
i.
Phase Impedances
ii.
Load Star Point Supply Neutral voltage
iii.
Phase Currents
iv.
Line Currents

Task 3 Three-Phase Transformers (P1.4)

a) Describe with the aid of diagrams the construction of Three-Phase
Transformers. Include descriptions of the following:
Shell type
Core type
The standards used for terminal markings
Table 4 lists transformer vector groups. You will be allocated one set from this
table.
b) Explain your allocated vector group.
c) Draw the winding connection diagram and the relevant Phasor diagram for
your allocated value. Fully explain these diagrams.

Important Notes:
1. Use diagrams and images to illustrate answers to all questions.
2. It is not acceptable to copy information from other resources as
the answer to the questions. This is obviously meaningless! You
are expected to obtain the information, analyse them and
describe / explain in your own words to show that you
understand the subject.
3. This assignment is intended to represent the individual effort of
each student. Consequently identical materials must not be
shared between students as it will be considered as plagiarism
and the college disciplinary procedure will be invoked.
4. Images and quotations may be used from other sources as part
of your answer. However full credit must be given to the source
of information.
5. Avoid the use of Wikipedia as the only source of information.
