NURS 2021H Clinical Course Final Evaluation

Course Objective
Recognize and begin to navigate the
complexities of family nursing.

Progress
Evidence/Indicators
The following examples demonstrate
how I have recognized and began to
navigate the complexities of family
nursing:
Through interactions with various family
members and communicating with
clients about their families I have come
to recognize that all families are
unique. Although, all families are
different it is important to treat them
all with respect.
Through interactions with family
members/clients and reading charts I
have been able to recognize that
family dynamics play a major role in
the recovery and treatment process.
For example, some clients enter the
mental health unit due to family crisis,
whereas others are able to improve
and be discharged due to supportive
family members.
I have demonstrated competence in my
practice by setting aside personal
values and beliefs in order to remain
open-minded. Doing so has allowed me
to better understand my clients
without any form of judgment.
Furthermore, this allows me to build
stronger therapeutic relationships with
the clients and their family members,
resulting in more efficient care.

Integrate knowledge from previous

courses to support diverse populations.

As I mentioned on the midterm

evaluation I believe that mental health
and family nursing is a never-ending
learning process. Therefore I feel as
though I have successfully met this
course objective, however I look forward
to further developing my knowledge in
the future.
The following examples demonstrate
how I have integrated knowledge from
previous courses to support diverse
populations:
NURS 2001 has taught me about
cultural diversity. I have learned that in
order to deal with cultural differences
and provide support to diverse
populations I must take the issue
seriously and be able to distinguish
between culture, ethnicity and race.
NURS 2001 has taught me about
relational practice, which can be
applied to diverse populations. It is
very important to remember that when
working relationally with diverse
populations, it is not about getting it
right; it is about relationally involving
myself to be able to inquire about
myself, others and the context and
imagine possibilities for action. Being
aware of self, others and context will
allow me to provide the best care
possible.
Whereas NURS 2001 has provided a
focus on relationally interacting
with/supporting diverse populations,
NURS 2003 has introduced me to the
diversity in pathologies among
populations. For example, the same

populations.
I feel as though I have successfully met
this course objective. I feel confident
applying the skills I have learned in
previous courses to support current and
future diverse populations.
The following examples demonstrate
how I have critically appraised relational
inquiry processes and began to develop
meaningful relationships with health
care providers and family members:
On July 9, 2016 I had the opportunity to
spend some time on the crisis unit
(CRU). In order to successfully inquire
about this unit I had to critically
appraise the situation in order to
develop a quick, yet meaningful
relationship with the CRU nurse. We
needed to develop this meaningful
relationship in order to feel
comfortable sharing information with
one another.
By critically appraising information that
was presented to me in NURS 2001, I
have been able to realize that some
colleagues may challenge my ability to
be in relation. Often times it is thought
that challenges originate only from
patients and their families, however
health care providers may also present
challenges. My colleagues may have
the ability to shape my practice and
values. Students are particularly
challenged due to power relations.
Being aware of this information is
important for me when developing
meaningful relationships.

based on knowledge of family nursing,
related theories and scholarly literature.

There is one meaningful relationship

that I established that stands out to
me. Through relational inquiry I was
able to learn that a young female on
the unit is interested in entering into
the Trent Nursing Program. I
established trust with this client,
allowing her to feel comfortable
opening up to me. We discussed the
nursing program, her interest in
nursing and the courses she would be
required to take in order to be
accepted into the program. While
discussing these topics, her family
entered the room; I could tell her mom
appreciated the conversation that was
occurring. This situation allowed me to
establish a meaningful relationship
with both the client and her family.
I feel as though I have successfully met
this course objective. Critically
appraising the relational inquiry process
has allowed me to develop meaningful
relationships with various nurses, HCPs,
clients and family members.
The following examples demonstrate
how I have collaboratively formulated a
plan of care based on knowledge of
family nursing, related theories and
scholarly literature:
On two occasions a colleague and
myself were responsible for taking the
vitals of all the clients present on the
unit. Many of these clients are on
medications that may alter blood
pressure. By taking their blood
pressure measurements and reporting
any abnormal findings I am actively

contributing to their formulated care

plans.
Activities such as card games, walks,
sports and puzzles have the ability to
improve the mental health of these
clients. These types of activities can
act as a distraction, as well as
encourage brain stimulation. By
participating in these activities I am
contributing to the care plans of the
clients.
I had the opportunity this semester to
attend a group meeting. A healthcare
professional conducted this group
meeting, however throughout the
meeting she asked if I had any input.
By contributing to this meeting I am
providing clients with information that
may assist them in their
recovery/treatment plans.
I feel as though I have successfully met
this course objective. By attending
classes, completing research and
interacting with HCPs I have been able
to formulate and contribute to client
care plans.
The following examples demonstrate
how I have developed, implemented and
evaluated the effectiveness of health
promoting, evidence-based practice,
reflecting principles of family nursing as
relational practice:
Over the course of this semester I have
learned that everyone plays a role in
health promotion; whether the role is
big or small, it is important. For
example, even something as small as

cafeteria for meals is important; proper

nutrition and hydration is a crucial in
the treatment of mental health
illnesses.
My professors and instructors have
emphasized the importance of best
practice guidelines. Over the course of
this semester I have read articles
associated with evidence-based
practice in order to enhance my
nursing skills. For example, the RNAO
websites provides various beneficial
articles associated with family nursing,
relational practice, etc.
I feel as though I have successfully met
this course objective. At the midterm
evaluation I believed that I needed to
work on this skill. Through the examples
provided on my midterm evaluation and
now the addition of these, I am
confident with this objective.
The following examples demonstrate
how I have demonstrated increasing
competence and confidence in the
application of psychomotor skills in
practice settings:
I displayed competence and confidence
in my psychomotor skills when I
completed, recorded and charted vitals
signs. This involved taking blood
pressure measurements, temperature,
pulse, respirations and O2 saturation
levels, as well as inquiring about bowel
movements.
When doing rounds and completing vital
signs, we were sometimes asked to
complete mini mental statuses on
some clients. I was able to complete

yes

this task; therefore I demonstrated

psychomotor skills in the practical
setting.
I was able to practice my injection skills
at placement. We were provided the
opportunity to practice injections on
oranges; this opportunity has
increased my competence and
confidence in my injection skills (e.g.
syringe handling, drawing up fluids,
aspiration, etc.)
I feel as though I have successfully met
this course objective. Over the course of
this semester I have had the opportunity
to increase my confidence and
competence in multiple psychomotor
skills. I will continue to work on these
skills in the future.

with a nurse entering a self-regulating
profession:
I demonstrated accountability and
professionalism when I charted vitals
signs. Recording these values in
clients charts and signing off makes
me accountable for all this information.
I am glad I had the opportunity to
complete the skill of charting, as this is
a skill that I will need to master in my
nursing career.
I demonstrated professionalism on July
9, 2016 when I realized that I was
familiar with one of the clients. I made
a conscious decision to not read his
background and chart in order to
maintain his privacy. I also

demonstrated accountability in this

situation when I vocalized this decision
to my instructor.
I feel as though I have successfully met
this objective. Accountability and
professionalism are two major skills in
the nursing profession. Emphasis of
these skills by my instructor has
encouraged me to be consciously aware
of all my actions, ensuring I am always
acting appropriately.
The following examples demonstrate
how I have selected appropriate
community support services for families
needing referral to enhance coping with
diverse transitional experiences:
On mental health day we were
introduced to the One Roof Community
Diner. However, after spending time at
the diner I feel more educated about
this service, thus allowing me to feel
more comfortable recommending it to
people as a resource.
Over the course of this semester I had
the opportunity to spend time in
various units at PRHC and learn about
various resources (e.g. through guests
speakers). These experiences have
provided me with new knowledge
about very beneficial resources and I
look forward to passing on this
information to others.
I feel as though I have successfully met
this course objective. I am mindful that
there are many more resources to learn
about, however I am confident to say
that I am aware of a lot more resources
now compared to the beginning of this

semester.

To be completed by student:
Student Areas of Strength
1. Non-judgmental nursing the mental health unit presents a lot of opportunities for nurses
to be judgmental; I made a conscious effort to be aware of this throughout my placement. I think
that I was successful in remaining non-judgmental; I entered all situations with an open mind,
resulting in the development of therapeutic relationships.
2. Patient learned skills through interactions with various clients I was able to learn from
them. For example, I learned stress reduction techniques from a client that I can apply to my own
life. It is always thought that nurses are the ones educating their clients, however I used this
placement as an opportunity to learn from them.
3. Professionalism and accountability I strongly believe that these are two very important
qualities in this profession. I therefore put a lot of conscious thought into always ensuring that I
am portraying these skills.
Student Areas for Future Development
1. Coping with emotions in the future I want to ensure that I have the skills to cope with all
and any emotions I may develop. This mental health placement has brought out many emotions
in me, and I want to work on being able to control my emotions in all settings.
2. Growing my confidence I do feel that with each placement I become more confident in my
skills and myself. However, I feel as though this is an area I could always improve on.
3. Showing I care I believe that I am a caring person; I entered this profession because I want
to help people. However, there are multiple ways to display care. I want to continue to learn new
ways of expressing care so I become more well rounded in this skill.

Clinical Instructor Comments (All areas marked as unsatisfactory must have a

comment)
Natalie has worked hard this term. She has met the learning outcomes with great ease. She was
consistently early for clinical and well prepared each day. She has been professional and caring in her
approach with her clients. She has grown in her ability to engage, sustain and terminate therapeutic
relationships with her clients. Natalie was engaged in the learning process and has sought out
opportunities to grow in caring for a very vulnerable population going to be a wonderful nurse. Her
ability to manage emotions comes with time and experience.
Keep up the terrific work Natalie and have a wonderful summer.
