Agricultural Revolution
1. The development of agricultural was positive in that it led to a more controllable
food supply because it was dependant on how it was cultivated as opposed to relying on
the chance that they would find an animal to hunt or food to forage. It also created a food
surplus which affected not just the farmers but people indirectly involved like merchants.
The society then thrived as a whole. The negative aspect of this was that farming was
hard which would lead to slavery and it hurt the environment. Agriculture depletes and
damages the environment as does a population increase.
2. Herding was a better alternative to agriculture because animals provide more in
terms of food and living. Animals can give both meat and milk as well as provide wool
and leather. However, it is a worse alternative in that it means you cant build cities
because you have to keep moving and a lot of animals that can be domesticated were
not readily available in the New World.
3. Some historians believe that the agricultural revolution happened because of
population pressure while others believe it could have been a fertility rite or because
they wanted to make alcohol. Ultimately, it was more likely that it came from the desire to
eat more and have more food available.
Columbus, de Gama, and Zheng He! 15th Century Marines
1. The voyages of Zheng He ended because the emperor who funded them died
and the one who replaced him was not as interested in the voyages but rather cared
more about home defense and was building the Great Wall. Also, Zheng He eventually
died.
2. Columbus voyage was a great success in that Spain became the leader in both
power and wealth in Europe after his voyages. It was mostly negative in that it impacted
people who were already living in the New World by wiping them out with disease and
war.
3. Vasco de Gama set out because he was in search of gold and to convert people
to Christianity. What he ended up doing was capturing and controlling trade post cities
and becoming a glorified pirate. This made Spain take notice and become interested in
the New World as well.
The Spanish Empire, Silver, & Runaway Inflation
1. Silver from the New World was not a good thing for Spain because it lead to a
huge influx of silver and because they did not adjust tax rates to account for the influx, it
led to inflation. Silver also lead to more war because wars are expensive and having the
wealth made Spain more willing to build on their army and ships.
2. The Inca and Aztec were well suited for a hostile take over because their
administrative structure was similar to that of the Spaniards. They also had a similar setup between secular and religious power. The biggest reason for the Aztecs was that, the

Aztecs were so hated by the people they had conquered that it made it easier for Cortes
to find allies against them.
3. The Spanish did not use African Slaves because they were too expensive
compared to exploiting indigenous labor and they were also not used to working in high
altitudes. The biggest reason was that mercury poisoning was a constant threat in the
mines and it was super deadly which would kill the African Slaves they had to pay for. So
instead they used forced labor called Miita which required adult males to work in the
mines for a set period of time.
The Black Legend, Native Americans, and Spaniards
1. When the Spanish explorers traveled to the New World, they encountered what
they saw as Indian Savagery. Spaniards were most likely searching for Gold and ways to
get rich off of whatever discoveries they made in the New World.
2. The environment was the biggest factor in determining regional Indian culture
because they had to make do with the natural sources they had available to them. For
example, the west coast Indians relied on fishing and gathering and the Indians of the
great plains relied on Buffalo. They did not mesh with the Europeans because they had
better wealth distribution among their people and regarded women in better terms. They
also did not see the land as something they owned but rather believed that land was
common to all people to be used but not owned.
3. The Puebla uprising was a success although it did not last but it did make
Spaniards more tolerant of indigenous religion and they abandoned the forced labor
practice called Encomienda. The reason the uprising was a success was because these
people had a common enemy in the Spaniards who had been the cause of their
population decline, fortune decline, and who used militant monks to force their beliefs on
them.
The Columbian Exchange
1. The spread of diseases affected mostly the natives of the New World who
suffered from smallpox, measles, and typhus. These diseases would wipe out as much
as 90% of their population combined with war. War also helped spread diseases which
would kill Rulers. Another aspect of the spread of diseases to the Native Americans was
that some people died of starvation because there were not enough people to help
cultivate food. The Old World was affected by the spread of venereal syphilis that was
brought by the Sailors.
2. The importation of animals to both the new world and the old world remade the
food supply. Europeans living in America did not experience famine because they
imported pigs who breed quickly and will eat anything. Ox and horses would also help
with transportation. With the introduction of the horse, some Native Americans
abandoned agriculture and instead chose a nomadic lifestyle hunting buffalo. Plants that
were sent to the old world helped the Europeans because plants like, potatoes were
higher in calories. Their population doubled during this time. The plants that were sent to
the new world would lead to African slaves being brought over.
3. Tobacco could be seeing as an effective response to the devastation that
diseases brought the new world because cigarettes killed and continue to kill millions of
people.

When is Thanksgiving? Colonizing America

1. The colonies all had different motivations, like for example the people in Virginia
were trying to find gold and that was their main motivation for being coming to the
colony. Marylands founder wanted a medieval feudal kingdom out of his colony and a
place for catholics. Neither one succeeded in what they were trying to accomplish but
the Massachusetts colony did better in some aspects because they were trying to
establish an actual society in order to practice where people had more of a say even if
officials were still part of the church.
2. Congregationalists were Protestant Puritans who believed that the church of
England was still too catholic and wanted congregations to determine leaderships and
worship structures instead of the Bishops. They settled in Massachusetts in 1630.
Separatists wanted to completely separate from the church and wanted just and equal
laws. They first arrived in Plymouth in 1620.
3. The Virginia Colony had many problems, one of them being that people did not
want to work on the actual land. They had all come with the intent to find gold and be
rich and would rather starve than work the land. They also had no real direction or
government to rule over them so they did what they wanted which lead to them having
no food or successes. Lastly, they had to deal with hostile indians who did not want
them invading any more of their territories.
The Natives and the English
1. Native Americans and the settlers began to clash once again because of trading.
In order for Indians to keep up with trade relations, the men spent more time hunting and
less time on agriculture which upset the gender balance. The Europeans also had
different ideas on how to handle land, they wanted to build fences and would let their
animals roam free which would lead to their animals eating crops that belonged to the
Native Americans. Lastly, when settlers wanted more fur, tribes began to fight with each
other over access to hunting grounds.
2. While some settlers thought that Indians should be replaced because they did
not use the land the way the settlers wanted, others believed that it was better to buy the
land from the Indians. Some Puritans saw Indians as savages and heathens in need of
salvation and others were worried people would be tempted to join the Native American
tribes. This was because people could be tempted by the indian way of life because of
equality and their treatment of women. This would lead Puritans to create punishments
for those who joined the Indians and lead to Anti-Indian propaganda.
3. The ways Indians killed the settlers livestock showed how they had seen the
settlers as a threat to them in part because the livestock they had was the reason they
needed so much land. They would slice a cows underbelly open and let it walk with its
entrails falling out. Some Native Americans cut open their enemies and shoved a bible
into their body cavities while burying them. Native Americans were tired of the settlers
using their christianity and promising salvation as a justification for them invading their
lands.

The Quakers, the Dutch, and the Ladies

1. It was better to be a poor person in America than a poor person in Europe
because America was still full of possibilities. America has plenty of food and people had
the possibility of one day owning land.
2. Nathaniel Bacons uprising shifted the colonies away from using indebted
servants to using slaves from Africa and would create a desire for the English crown to
control the colonies more. His rebellion ultimately became an example of lower class
artisans and farmers rising up against the corrupt British elite.
3. The main indication of freedom during the colonial era was a person owning a
farm. People who owned property were richer than the colonial elites. This would affect
population density because more people would branch out in search of their own piece
of property.
