Introduction
Building materials are any type of materials that are used for construction purposes. This project is designed as an
introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the construction industry. Students are required to
choose their choice of architects and their buildings that utilize the listed materials. The exercise aims in helping the
students to explore and understand the materials in terms of its characters, properties and impacts it give to building
designs and its environment.
Objectives of Project
The task of this project is to select an architect and their building that utilizes several types of building materials,
namely stones, concrete, brick and glass. The students are required to analyze the materials that are used by the
Architect for the building that is chosen and produce a presentation board that explains the characters of the building
materials and how these materials relate with the surrounding context.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to:
1. Recognize how intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material become factors in design
considerations.
2. Effectively work with a material in line with design requirements.
3. Be able to express a material within its contextual application (solid and transparency).
4. Be able to recognize elements of modularity, symmetry and asymmetry in the materials applied on to the
buildings.
Tasks - Methodology
Students are required to select a local or international Architect, together with their buildings. Selection of architects
and buildings can be in any particular time or age. The building must use any (three) 3 types of building material,
listed below:
- Stones
- Concrete
- Brick
- Glass (compulsory)
Students are required to produce an presentation A2 board consisting the architects background, concept of building
and explanation about the building materials. Plans, elevations and sections of the building with complete annotation
on the types of materials used mainly for the flooring and walls. The drawings are to be manually drawn.
Issues to consider are:

Identification of the types of materials used in building designs

Suitability of materials in building design (advantage and disadvantages)
Characteristics of materials
Expression of materials in physical built form (solid, transparent, translucent etc.)

Reviews
There will be two reviews:
1. First review will be a draft. Its requirements will be working analytic A2 board containing :
Architect and Buildings Background
Information on Building Materials
Plan
Section
Elevation
Samples of Materials
Date : 25 April 2016 (Week 5) - PROJECT REVIEW
2. The second will be the final project review. Its requirements will be a final presentation board containing:
Architect and Buildings Background
Information on Building Materials
Plan
Section
Elevation
Samples of Materials
Date : 9 May 2016 (Week 6) SUBMISSION
