Settlingtheory
Ingravitysettling,thedisperseddrops/bubbleswillsettleatavelocitydeterminedbyequatingthegravityforceonthedrop/bubblewiththedragforcecausedbyitsmotion
relativetothecontinuousphase.
Inhorizontalvessels,asimpleballisticmodelcanbeusedtodeterminearelationshipbetweenvessellengthanddiameter.Inverticalvessels,settlingtheoryresultsinarelation

Fordemisters(horizontalorverticalvessels)sealedinagasbox,inadditiontothedemisterarea,someheightmustbemaintainedbetweenthebottomofthedemisterandthe
highestliquidlevelforthedemistertodrain.Apressuredropexistsacrossthedemister.Iftheliquidlevelistoohigh,thedemisterwillnotdrain,andliquidsiphoningcanoccur.
Asmallholeissometimesdrilledintothedrainpipeasasiphonbreaker.
Whenusingsettlingtheoryordemistersizinginhorizontalvessels,oneshouldalsoconsiderthegasvelocityforreentrainment.Toohighofagasvelocitywillresultinliquid
reentrainmentfromtheliquidsurface,whichmayfloodthedemisterandcausecarryover.TypicalgasvelocitiesforreentrainmentareshowninTable2.
