KILCHRIST CARBONATE FORMATION

82100
Calcarenite - calcilutite, homogenious calcite. Well sorted,
randomly orientated, sub-rounded, interlocking grains. Chert
nodules abundant. Abundant ne-scale chert bands provided evidence
for bedding planes, and therefore unit to be folded with axial plane
running SW-NE. Calcite veins accessory. Kilchrist Carbonate has been
altered to Kilchist Marble from local contact metamorphism in
discontinuous aureole around Beinn Dearg Bheag Granite intrusion.

BEINN AN DUBHAICH GRANITE FORMATION

Fine-coarse grained, predominately equigranular, granodiorite. Pluton
is part of the Skye Igneous Centre, associated with the British Tertiary
Igneous Province. Pluton has intruded into surrounding Kilchrist
Carbonate causing local contact metamorphism, responsible for the
alteration to Kilchrist Marble and skarns. Extensive sub-vertical jointing
throughout.

BEINN DEARG BHEAG GRANITE FORMATION

Medium-coarse grained, mostly equigranular, granodiorite. Pluton
is responsible for the formation of the Eastern Red Hills Centre,
associated with the British Tertiary Igneous Province.
Extensive weathering of biotite is responsible for distinctive
orange colouration to otherwise grey rock, and hence the
local name Red Cuillin.

KILCHRIST HYBRID FORMATION

Porphyritic microgarnite. Groundmass is equigranular, but rare
0.5-2mm phenocrysts of plagioclase and pyroxene are found.
Replacement of plagioclase by pyroxene in many places provides
evidence for interaction of felsic and mac magma within the magma
chamber prior to eruption. Kilchrist Hybrid is emplaced due to ring-dyke
intrusion around Kilchrist Vent.

FITHEACH AGGLOMERATE
Becciated agglomerate. Matrix aphanitic - ne grained, mac in
composition. Clast percentage ranges 15-55%. Clast size ranges
<1mm-20cm. Clasts composition predominately dolerite and carbonate,
but basalt and sedimentary clasts also present. Limited evidence for bedding
shows multiple ows, owing downhill away from Beinn Dearg Bheag in a
general southernly direction. The formation is a result of the British Tertiary
Igneous Province.

COIRE FORSAIDH RHOLITE

Brecciate rhyolite exhibiting 85% matrix, 15% clasts. Quartz and biotite
phenocrysts are accessory. Clasts compose of sub-rounded, green,
1mm-3cm, replacement of quartz phenocrysts; and 1-8cm stratied
clasts with similar composition to lithology, the latter being far more
abundant. Abundant ame provide evidence for multiple ows.
