1 BRIDGE EXAMINATION IMPORTANT

QUESTIONS
1.

Duties of welding inspector -before welding, during welding, and after welding.
This question is very important.
Please see the attachment

2.

List of two planner defects and cause.

1. Lack of fusion
Improper manipulation during welding by welder / welding operator
Low amperage for welding
Travel speed of welding is too high.
2. Crack
Improper cleaning (by contamination on the weld face / weld)
Lack of preheating (increasing of quenching effect)
High heat input (increasing overall hardness / thermal stresses on the weld joint).
High CEV value (Carbon Equivalent Value)

3.

List of two volumetric defects and cause.

1. Slag inclusion
Due to improper cleaning during welding of material.
Poor joint configuration for welding
Poor accessibility for cleaning
2. Porosity
Due to improper shielding of weld metal spool.
Due moisture in the covered flux coating
Shielding gas pressure is too high
4.

What documents required before attending a repair.

Below listed essential documents are required before carrying out the
repairing:

Repairing procedure for carrying out excavation / repairing

Appropriate WPS for repair of welding
Qualified welder for repairing for the particular welding method / material
Repair location is mentioned by tracing supported from the radiographic

department
Repairing memo should available duly approved by senior welding inspector.

QUESTIONS
5.

Which NDT Method is best suitable to find out the LACK OF SIDE WALL FUSTION?
1. Ultrasonic Testing

- Is the best recommended for detecting the lack of side wall

fusion irrespective of joint material thickness.
2. Radiographic testing It is recommended < 20mm for finding out lack of side wall
joint, especially tubular section on site.

6.

Which DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION method used for welder qualification.

Qualitative tests:
Guided bend test
fillet weld fracture test
Quantitative tests:
Charpy impact test
Ultimate Tensile test

7.

Find out the destructive test used from its UNITS.

Impact testing units in kilo joules
Tensile test neuton per millimeter square (mm2)

8.

How to find out the root defects of small pipe joint (which is not accessible small
diameter)
Methods of finding root defects in small bore pipes:
Using Boroscope to asses the root defects by remote
Using nondestructive testing methods radiography, ultrasonic testing
Using through ball test to find the root penetration of the joint ( fabricated

9.

spools)
Using camera probe to find the joint is too long for access by boroscope

In a weld there is an undercut of 48 mm in-length weld. As per code 50 mm length is

acceptable the weld .what other things to be concerted before accepting the weld.
Factors to be considered before accepting the undercut during inspection:
Depth of the undercut
Location of the undercut (whether in external undercut or Root undercut)
Undercut length by Cumulative or Single length
Location of undercut again by interpass in the capping on the weld or
in the parent material.

Note:In general instead of accepting the undercut, recommended to be grind & merge the
undercut. (Because any notch in the surface or a weld to increase stress concentration and
ultimately affecting fatigue life of the weld)

QUESTIONS
10.

What action you are taking if you found any arc strikes or material damage on the job.
ALL ANSWERE IN AVALIABLE IN AWS COURCE BOOK

Carefully inspect the area of coverage of ark strike

Select the repairing procedure for repairing of ark strikes

Do grinding or alternative repair removals process to remove the arc strikes from the
surface of the material

Carry out Magnetic particle inspection for ferrous materials or Dye penetrant test for
Non ferrous materials.

Evaluate the Surface for complete removal of the ark strike with / with out cracking

Measure the thickness by ultrasonic testing of nominal wall thickness of the repaired
area, if reduced do buttering with the correct buttering specification and procedure
(WPS)

In addition take measurement of Hardness testing in the localized repaired area , if

exceeds proceed for Post weld heat treatment.
