4.3 GSTG with internal power and internal reference capacitor

The GSTG mode is applied to split the capacitors of grounded specimen. The Low voltage cable is
applied to be a guard layer. The current flowed from the low voltage cable will be decreased from the final
test result.
The reference connection mode for GSTG with internal power and internal reference connection is as
figure 9B. The capacitors in part 2 will be guarded in this mode. The figure 9C is the reference connection
for three-phase DY power transformer test in GSTG mode.
The software test item in GSTG is the same as GST, but the M mode of GST should be selected. You
can move the cursor to the GST and then click button enter. The M logo will be displayed as figure 9D
when GSTG is selected.

4.4 Shield layer of low voltage cables

The leakage current flowed from the shield layer of Cx cable will not be calculated by the bridge in
the final test results. That means if we connect one parts of the specimen to the shield layer of Cx cable, the
capacitor value and dielectric dissipation factor from the test point to the shield layer will not be included in
the final test result.
Fox example in figure 10. The single phase voltage transformer with 2 secondary windings and both
the HV terminal had been packaged with bushes. The total dissipation of the HV winding to LV winding
and shell could be stood by capacitor C1, C2 and C3 as figure 10. If we make measurement as figure 10 in
UST mode, we will get the capacitor value as C3. Both C1 and C2 will not be included in the test result
because leakage current I1 and I2 do not flow into the internal bridge.

4.5 Typical Applications in Power System

4.5.1 Measure Dielectric Dissipation Factor of 3-phase Transformer
1)Measure the total dielectric dissipation factor of windings in GST Test Mode
The total dielectric dissipation factor of windings of 3-phase power transformer is constructed by two parts
as figure 11. The capacitor C1 stand for the capacitor value of HV windings to shell and the capacitor C2
stand for the capacitor value of HV windings to LV windings in figure 11.
The capacitor value and dielectric dissipation factor of C2 could be measured in UST mode. If the shell of
power transformer has been grounded, GST test mode should be applied in measuring the capacitor value
and dielectric dissipation of C1.

Figure 11 Dielectric dissipation construction for three phase transformer

Normally the LV windings are connected with the shell together in dielectric dissipation measurement for
three phase power transformers. In this connection mode GST test mode should be applied in the test. Also
the value measured by TDC3000 stand for whole loss of windings of power transformer.
The figure 12 to figure 18 are the typical measurement for the while dielectric dissipation factor
measurement of windings of power transformer. All those test should made in GST test mode.
2)Measure the dielectric dissipation factor from HV Windings to LV Windings in UST Test Mode
The dielectric dissipation factor of HV windings to LV windings for two winding power transformer could
be represented by capacitor C2 in figure 11. In order to get the accuracy test result the leakage current
flowed from the shell should not be injected to the bridge internal the tester. So the UST mode is

12

applied in the test and the shell of the transformer should be connected to ground.

All the typical connection diagram of follow is based on YY connection for mode for three phase
power transformer. If the winding connection mode is Delta, Please make short connection for

Please make test connection as figure 21 for Single phase transformer with single insulation bushes. The
UST test mode should be selected and the dielectric dissipation factor of HV winding to LV winding will be
measured in this test. Please be careful that the maximum output current of the TDC3000 is 200mA. Some
of the power output will be consumed at the high voltage winding excitation. Also the test voltage should

18

not more than the rated voltage of high voltage winding of the single phase transformer.
The single phase transformer with single bushes includes phase voltage measurement voltage transformer
and voltage booster of HIPOT tester.
Warning:
The low voltage winding should keep open for the single bushes transformer PF measurement. Also
the low voltage side of high voltage winding should be connected to ground So that the excitation
current of HV winding will not affect the final test result.

4.5.3 Measure Dielectric Dissipation Factor of Motors

All the output windings of power generator motors should connected together with the high voltage cable
of the test set. Also the winding of excitation should be connected to ground as figure 22. The GST test
mode should be applied in the dielectric dissipation factor measurement of HV power generator motors.

5.Operation Guide
5.1 Protection Units
There are many safe protections are integrated in the tester. The details of protection are as following:
1) High voltage side protection
If the sample is break down or the test current is over the maximum value for short circuit the test
would stop test and cut off power out automatically
2) Input power supply Protection
If power supply is unstable or broken suddenly, or connected to 380V mistakenly, it will go to
protected status .Main power supply circuit will be cut off automatically
3) Grounded Protection
There is ground detection unit in the test set. If the test set has not been grounded the test will not be
disenabled until the test set had been grounded.

20

5.2 Panel of Tester

The panel of TDC3000 is as figure 22 and figure 23. Figure 22 is the front panel of TDC3000, which is
able to measure the CVT dielectric dissipation factor. Figure 23 is the HV output port of TDC3000.The
detailed descriptions are as following:

Figure 22 Front Panel of TDC3000

1)Cx socket (range 10A1A)

Function: Leakage current detection for UST as figure 9.
Connection: The core of cable connects LV test point of specimen, the current flow from the core
will be calculated in the final test results; the shell connects LV shell point, the current flow from the shell
will be ignored in the bridge. It will not include in the final test result. If no shell point on the specimen,
please keep the cable shell free. In the socket, pin 1 is core, pin 2/3 are shell (already grounded).
Notice:
(a) Strictly prohibiting pull out the cable while testing in UST mode.
(b) Use full-shelled connector to improve accuracy of measurement.
(c) In order to avoid false data, the cable should be connected the set and the specimen reliably.
(d) In order to prevent inductive electric shock, it's better to disconnect the cable while keeping the
cable grounded.

21

2)Cn socket (range 10A-5A)

Function: use an external reference capacitor.
Connection: similar with the Cx socket.
(a) Wire the external reference capacitor with full shelled connector to improve the accuracy of
measurement
(b) Cn socket is valid while External Cn mode on test menu is selected.
(c) Set the capacitance and the dissipation factor of reference capacitor connected. So the test set
could use the external capacitor as a standard value.

3)Grounding socket
The ground Pin of power input socket has been connected to the shell of case. The test set should
be well grounded all the time when testing. No ground connection will cause danger in the metal touch
point of the test set.

4)Power supply inlet (180V~270V, 50Hz/60Hz)

(a) There is a fast protection of power failure, so the power supply should be well connected.
(b) If the input voltage is higher than 270V, the set will be protected.
(c) If the voltage is lower than 180V, the set cannot output 10kV voltage and maybe brings protection.
If the local power if 110V system, the power must be converted to 220V by a transformer or a booster with
capacitance no less than 500VA.
(d) The test set can fit the 50Hz/60Hz power frequency automatically.
(e) If powered with a portable generator, the frequency can not be locked with the interference
frequency that means no anti-interference function enabled. The frequency of the generator may fluctuate
greatly, so it is better to select the fixed frequency mode (50/60Hz).

5)Main switch and Keys

The main fuse of the test set is 5A/250V. When turning ON, test menu will be displayed after a few
seconds. In the case of emergency, turn OFF the switch immediately.
Notice: If the exchanged fuse is broken again, there may be internal error, please contact with the
manufacturer and get a guide suggestion for further inspection.
1)key to move cursor.
2)andkeys to modify the setting.
3)

key to enter.

4) Press any key to terminate the test while the test is proceeding.

6)CVT output

22

If CVT test is supported: CVT1 is the low voltage output, and CVT2 is the grounding (it is the same
terminal of earth connection).

7)HV output socket (voltage range 0.5~10kV, maximum current 200mA

Position: at the front side of the tester as figure 23.
Function: internal HV output; the sample current measurement point of GST; the HV end of the
internal reference capacitor.
Connection: When UST, the core and / or shell of the HV cable connect to the HV side of sample.
When GST the core connects the HV test point of sample, the shell connects the HV shell of sample, if no
shell on the sample let the cable shell free. In the socket, pin 1 is core, 2/3 pins are shell, and all are on HV.
Warning:
(a) All cables of the test set are exchangeable. It is advised that the HV cable is connected with the
socket. HV socket and HV cable are at high voltage! Turn off power supply before making connection for
the HV socket.
(b) In order to avoid false data, the cable should be connected the test set and the specimen reliably.
(c) In order to prevent inductive electric shock, it's better to disconnect the cable while keeping the
cable grounded.

6.Trouble Shooting
If the test result is in doubt, please test a reference capacitor to check the settings whether is right or
wrong. If the wrong test result is confirmed generated by the test set, please check as following:
1) The HV cable is not connected properly
If the HV cable is connected to the specimen by a hook, there may be thick dust on the specimen, and
bring in bad readings. Please make sure the specimen to the test set is reliable.
2) The grounding cable is not connected properly
There may be thick rust or thick paint on ground conductor. Please make sure the test set has been
connected to earth properly.
If readings obviously change while test the same specimen continuously, maybe the cable is bad.
3) Minus dissipation factor
Some minus PF are due to test principle such as test CVT in UST mode, test PT by the way of end
grounded. Some are due to stray capacitance such as the HV cable is too close to the specimen, or the
specimen is not shelled well. Some are due to high humidity or discharge at contact point etc.
4) High humidity
If the air humidity is too high, its better to add a shield ring on the sample to shell the surface
leakage.
5) Power by a generator
The input frequency is unstable. Its better to use fixed frequency mode.
6) Test cable
The cables may be broken after long-term use. The test set should be calibrated with a standard PF
device periodically.
7) Select a right frequency
Please select a frequency different from power frequency to enable the anti-interference function.
