Course Overview:

This course covers fundamental topics of the electronic circuits that are used
as basic building blocks for various electronic systems. The topics include
right from the inception of designing of electronic circuits such as small signal
amplifiers, large signal amplifiers, feedback amplifiers, tuned amplifiers and
oscillator for building real time applications. This course starts with the recall
of the operation and characteristics of semiconductor devices (namely,
semiconductor diodes, BJTs, JFETs and MOSFETs), and leads to more advanced
topics in analog circuit design. It also provides a basis for students to design
various electronic circuits as per the requirement of the applications and
makes the student to design electronic systems as per the given
specifications.
II.

Prerequisite(s):

III

Electronic devices (A2401)

Basic Electrical Engineering (A2201)
Mathematics I (A2001)

Course Objectives:

1. To explore the principle of working of amplifiers and enable them to construct

various amplifiers for different applications.
2. To discuss the mathematical analysis of BJT amplifiers and JFET amplifiers and
to introduce the concepts of amplifier parameters and frequency response.
3. To distinguish between negative and positive feedback concepts so as to
apply them to suitable amplifier and oscillator circuit design.

Course Outcomes:

Up on successful completion of this course, student will be able to:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
V.

Extract the equivalent models for BJT and JFET at low and high frequencies so
as to analyze any electronic circuit.
Differentiate between the positive and negative feedback concepts as applied
to various electronic circuits.
Design, construct & analyze oscillator circuits to generate audio and radio
frequency sinusoidal signals.
Realize different types of power amplifiers for practical applications as per the
specifications.
Apply the electronic circuit analysis concepts for designing tuned amplifiers.
Marks Distribution:

The performance of the student shall be evaluated with a maximum of 100 marks for
each course. The evaluation shall be for 25 marks through internal evaluation and 75 marks
through external end
semester examination. The description regarding the mid
semester marks and external end semester
marks is as follows:
Mid Semester Marks
There shall be two midterm examinations called Mid I and Mid II. Each midterm
examination is of subjective type. The subjective test is duration of two hours with
total marks being 20. The syllabus that shall be covered for Mid I and Mid II
subjective tests are the first two and half units and the remaining portion
respectively.
The mid exam shall contain five one mark compulsory questions in part A and
part B contains five questions, each carrying five marks. The student has to
answer any three of five questions in
part B.
In addition to mid exams, there shall be one online objective test conducted for 30
minutes containing 20 objective questions covering the entire syllabus. The
evaluated score is adjusted to five marks scale.
For the consideration of awarding the final internal marks an average of two mid
exams is calculated and added to the objective score and recorder for a maximum
of 25.
External End Semester Marks
The university end examination shall be conducted for duration of three hours
with total marks being 75.
The End examination shall contain a total of ten questions with two questions
from each of the five units on either or basis. The student shall answer one
question from each unit compulsorily. Each question carries fifteen marks. The
total marks will be 75.
