Digital Arts in Context

Digital Arts in Context is a docu-series that blends traditional

documentary structure with ultra short form narrative
conventions in an attempt to gain an intimate but holistic
view of cutting edge new media art and design. The long
form feature utilizes this content, but will focus primarily
on the impact reconciliation of traditional studio and
gallery practices with the mediums and capacities of New
Media.

Digital Arts in Context brings the viewer into the studio and
into the gallery to develop an intimate connection between
the viewer and artist. Candid discussions of major issues in
digital art bring awareness to the dichotomy between the
industry standards of fine art and the practices of digital
work. This film aims to provoke discussion between artists,
gallerists, art insurers and collectors and bring these
discussions into the public sphere.

Tonally and visually this series is taking
advantage of both traditional
documentary practices and the
conventions of shortform filmmaking.
The interviews are intended to be
intimate and contextualized. The expert
discussion is reminiscent of the talking
style, but is clearly situated in the
subject’s “natural environment” and
features footage of the subjects
interacting with their space/discipline.

The discussion will be a constructed dialogue,

using interview footage to narrate the story and
positioned to create the effect of the interview
subjects having an intimate group discussion.

Multiple Platform Model

This documentary project is intended to be multi-

modal to provide maximum opportunities for
granting and distribution.

• Short-form digital content is the easiest way to reach a

mass audience for the lowest investment.
• Most granting models are still structured for long-form
documentary.

This project is structured to allow the content to be

released in three forms.

• Short form online video

• Episodic online video
• Feature length

Cooperative Distribution of Feature Length content

This documentary project is intended
to be multi-modal to provide
maximum opportunities for granting
and distribution. Short-form digital
content is the easiest way to reach a
mass audience for the lowest
investment. This will also help develop
the brand among those who are most
interested in the content. Most
granting models are still structured for
long- form documentary. This project is
structured to allow the content to be
flexible in terms of distribution and
take advantage of the existing funding
structures for documentary.

We are currently seeking to fund the

development of the feature length film
based on the online docu-series.

ACT 1
Veteran artist, Carla Gannis and Gallerist, Juan Puntes build on
Artist’s commentary and discuss the basics of the digital art
debate. Carla and Juan establish their expertise and start to
build a rapport with the audience. After a few minutes, the
commentary begins to be intercut with footage of Eleftherios
Benetos in his studio. He is making a last minute reprint of a
fine art print. He candidly discusses the differences between
fine art photography and fine art digital imaging through
explaining what he is doing and why. Carla begins to explain
“the scarcity model” as other experts round out her
explanation. Juan makes the connection from print to
interactive. Interactive Designer Eric O'Toole, Creative Coder
Igor Molochevski, and Eric Rieper join the debate on the
importance of making connections in interactive art over
commercial viability.
