Policies and Procedures

Walkways
Goal:
The walkways of Podesta Ranch will be used to get from one place to another in a
safe and orderly manner.

Guidelines for Success/Behavioral Expectations:


Safe:

Walk in the hallways

Stay to the right in hallways and staircase

Hold on to handrail on the stairs

Mindful:

Keeps voices low

Face forward when walking

Think of the other children in classrooms

Accountable:

Follow directions

Quiet waves hello

Be your own boss, not everyone elses

Respectful:

Active listening

Straight and orderly lines

Keep hands off the walls

Truthful:

Accept consequences

Follow directions, even when an adult is not looking

Go directly to and from your destination

Student Responsibilities:
Lines:

Students will walk in a single file line on the walkways.

Students will keep to the right when walking in lines.

Students will give the right of way for younger students and adults.

Unsupervised:

Students will walk quietly.

Students will have a hall pass during class time.

Students will get to where they are going promptly.

Students will keep to the right when passing other people.

Teacher Responsibilities:

Use this lesson plan to teach students rules and procedures of walkways.
o These lessons should be conducted in a way that informs the students of
the rationale for the procedures and should be presented in a way that
shows faculty and students work together.

Teachers will consistently enforce rules and procedures with students for
walkways.
o While on campus, staff members should interact positively with students
as they pass by. The goal is to supervise in a warm and friendly way
rather than a cold and hostile way.

Teachers will reinforce rules and procedures with students for walkways.
o Teachers will practice the procedure with students at the beginning of
the school year and as needed throughout the year.
o After breaks and if there are reoccurring problems with students,
teacher will revisit lesson plans.

All Staff Responsibilities:

Staff will ensure that students will walk in a single file line on walkways.

Staff walking with students will stay with the line and be aware of student
behavior throughout the line.

Staff will have stopping points to make sure that all students stay together

Staff will accompany student line to and from the playground.

Staff will ensure that lines keep to the right when passing people or other
lines.

Staff will remind individual students of Student Responsibilities as needed.

Encouragement Procedures:
Staff will consistently encourage responsible behavior through positive interactions.

Initiate positive attention and friendly interactions

Provide verbal praise for following walkways procedures

Award Talon Ticket for exemplary behavior

At the discretion of teacher, there could be class points or awards for


compliance

Hierarchy of Consequences:
When a student misbehaves, calmly and consistently implement the mildest
consequence that is appropriate to the situation.

Verbal reprimand in a calm and respectful manner

Positive practice (have students do it the right way)

Loss of privilege, time out (Circle Up), and/or call home

Policies and Procedures

Cafeteria
Goal:
The lunch line and lunch area will be a safe and clean environment where people
interact with courtesy and respect.

Guidelines for Success/Behavioral Expectations:


Safe:

Walk

Sit correctly at the tables

Keep all food to self

Keep hands to self

Mindful:

Keep voices low

Think about the janitor and help him out

Eat food properly

Accountable:

Clean up after self

Clean up after friends

Respectful:

Let anyone sit next to you

Eat only your food

Take only what you will eat

Only eat food in the cafeteria

Student Responsibilities:

Stay in an orderly line by class when in line.

While in line students will keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves.

Students will plan ahead and pick up all necessary lunch items before sitting
down at the table (spork, milk, condiments, and salad bar items).

Students will sit by class at their designated table.

Students will use quiet voices while talking.

Students will stay in their seats and raise their hands to get help, or get
permission to leave their seats.

Students will eat quietly and use good manners.

Students will walk in the lunch area.

Students will not share or give food away.

Students will clean up their own areas.

Students will throw away all uneaten school lunches.

When dismissed, students will dispose of their lunch trays correctly and walk to
the playground.

Lunch monitors (chosen by each classroom teacher) will assist the lunchroom
staff to clean their classrooms table.

Teacher Responsibilities:

Each class will have two designated lunch monitors (weekly) who will assist the
lunchroom staff in cleaning their classrooms table. They will wipe off their
own table and sweep up any large trash.

Each teacher will make sure all students are lined up in an orderly fashion and
walk with their class to the cafeteria on time (please follow the lunch
schedule).

Each teacher will pick up their own class at their designated line on the
playground on time.

Each teacher will escort their own class back to their classroom in an orderly
manner.

All Staff Responsibilities:

At the beginning of the school year, and after long vacations, classroom
teachers will teach the rules and expectations as outlined.

Administration will review lunch rules and expectations with students.

Yard Duty Responsibilities:

Yard Duty will report to the lunchroom on time.

Lunch room supervisor will keep students in an orderly line as students wait for
their lunches to be served.

Yard Duty will constantly circulate throughout the cafeteria, interacting with
students in a friendly manner.

Yard Duty will assist students with their hands raised as soon as possible (open
milk, etc).

If a student violates a rule, Yard Duty will use a firm, respectful voice to tell
the student what he/she should be doing.

Cafeteria workers will retrieve cleaning supplies and prepare them for use prior
to the students arrival.

Yard Duty will dismiss students from tables by quietest and cleanest tables.

Yard Duty will call the office to ask for assistance when necessary.

Minor Infractions:

Sharing or giving away food

Getting out of seat without permission

Inappropriate cafeteria voice

Sneaking food or drink out of the cafeteria

Sitting inappropriately

Consequences:

Verbal reprimand

Positive practice (have student try it again)

Misbehavior in line = go to the end of the line

Stent is removed from their table to sit alone.

Student will Circle Up for 5 minutes outside

Excessive noise or uncleanliness from any given class will be reported to the
Principal and classroom teacher.

Major Infractions:

Inappropriately touching or putting hands on another student

Defiant behavior toward supervisors

Throwing food or drink

Rude/obscene language and/or gestures

Consequences:

Student will Circle Up for the remainder of lunch

Use a discipline referral only for physically dangerous behavior, illegal behavior,
or overt insubordination

Bathroom
Goal:
The bathrooms at Podesta Ranch will be kept clean, and used in a safe and
appropriate manner.

Guidelines for Success/Behavioral Expectations:


Safe:

Keep feet on the floor

Keep water in the sink

Throw paper towels in the trash

Mindful:

Keep stall doors closed

Keep voices low

Get back to class or the playground quickly

Accountable:

Wash hands

Keep the bathroom clean

Use bathroom during recess

Respectful:

Give people privacy

Always flush

Wait your turn

Truthful:

Only use the bathroom when you have to

Student Responsibilities:

Students will be respectful of others using the bathroom.

Students will keep the bathroom clean.

Students will have a bathroom hall pass in plain sight when out during class
time.

Students will take the shortest possible time to use the bathroom.

Students will try to use the bathroom during recesses only.

Teacher Responsibilities:

Use this lesson plan to teach students rules and procedures of bathroom.

These lessons should be conducted in a way that informs the students of the
rationale for the procedures and should be presented in a way that shows
faculty and students work together.

Teacher will consistently enforce rules and procedures with students the
bathroom.

Any teacher passing by a bathroom should make a quick check to see that
appropriate bathroom behavior is being followed.

Teachers will reinforce rules and procedures with students for bathroom.
o Teacher will practice the procedure with students at the beginning of
the school year and as needed throughout the year.
o After breaks and if there are reoccurring problems with students,
teacher will revisit lesson plans.

Teachers will have a log in their classrooms for students using the restrooms,
including the time students left the classroom and return time.

Yard Duty Responsibilities:

Ensure that students are using the correct bathrooms:

During lunch and recess, do quick checks to see if the appropriate bathroom
behavior is being followed.

Provide verbal praise for following bathroom procedures

Playground
Goal:
The playground at Podesta Ranch will be a safe and friendly area for all students.

Guidelines for Success/Behavioral Expectations:


Safe:

Walk on the blacktop

Kick balls in the field

Follow playground rules

Play nicely

Mindful:

Line up quietly after the whistle blows

Wait your turn patiently

Be aware of games and activities happening

Accountable:

Report problems, dont tattle

Put equipment away

Use the restroom and get drinks before the bell

Respectful:

Leave nature outside

Include anyone who wants to play

Use kind words

Truthful:

Admit wrong doing

Apologize

Share

Get a pass to go to the office

Student Responsibilities:

Students will show respect for others and follow instructions given by staff.

Students will stay out of puddles and mud.

Students will leave rocks, bark, sticks, and animals alone.

Students will leave dangerous and hazardous objects alone and immediately
tell staff.

Students will play in the designated playground areas.

Students will show pride in their school by keeping the buildings and grounds
free of litter.

Students will take turns on/with equipment.

Students will not chew gum.

Students will eat snacks in the designated area only and dispose of their trash.

Students will leave dangerous and unsafe objects at home along with cameras,
radios, CD players, iPods, video games, toys, and balls.

Students not involved in permitted after school programs will leave the school
promptly.

Students will freeze at the whistle and line up at the bell.

Teacher Responsibilities:

Each teacher will conduct lessons on playground behavior.

Teachers will teach and review playground expectations on a regular basis.

Teachers will be on time to pick up their students.

Teachers will meet their students at the designated playground area and walk
them back to class following Walkway Procedures.

Yard Duty Responsibilities:

Report to duty on time with a whistle, a clipboard, office referrals, walkietalkie, vest, and Band-Aids.

All yard duties will circulate in an unpredictable manner in their assigned zones
and avoid standing in one place or talking with one another.

All yard duties will be visible and interact positively with many students by
greeting them and engaging in short, friendly conversations. Students are not
to hang-out with yard duties unless they are shadowing for a time out.

Yard duties are not to play games with the children. You need to be
circulating.

Yard duties should always be DOING SOMETHING remember to respond to


behaviors calmly and consistently

Encouragement Procedures:
Staff will consistently encourage responsible behavior through positive interactions.

Initiate positive attention and friendly interactions

Provide verbal praise for following playground rules

Award Talon Ticket for exemplary behavior

At the discretion of teacher, there could be class points or awards for


compliance

Hierarchy of Consequences:
When a student misbehaves, calmly and consistently implement the mildest
consequence that is appropriate to the situation.

Verbal reprimand in a calm and respectful manner. (While reprimanding


students, remember to face the playground for continued awareness of other
children.)

Positive practice (have students do it the right way)

Loss of privilege, time out Circle Up, and/or call home

Behavioral referral for repeated offenses

Crisis Procedures:
Radio the office or send a responsible student to the office when any of the following
occurs:

Severe injury/medical crisis (do not move the student)

Fights, physically dangerous acts, illegal acts, insubordination

Student leaves school site without permission

Unidentified adult on school site
