Varnishes history for bowed stringed instruments. State of the
Art and critical reflection.. Abstract This text presents a synthesis of painting research published in Spain and Italy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Moreover a summary of treaties or studies published in the nineteenth and twentieth century referring to varnishes for bowed string instruments will be presented. The study focuses on materials, forms and methods of preparation of this varnishes, with special attention to the paints used by luthiers. The materials used in the artistic production have been widely studied, but the varnish, especially those used by luthiers, have always been shrouded in mystery. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Cremona becomes the manufacturing center of bowed string instruments. The varnish is one of the most important and fundamental part of the instrument construction. It will give an overview of the varnish that could be prepared and used by such famous craftsmen-artists. The varnish on a musical instrument is extremely important, as the case in paintings, where by itself is able to completely change the final art-work. Some of the instruments that we hear today were created three hundred years ago, few of them have survived to this day with its original varnish. Nowadays in the field of conservation and restoration the research is focused on the stability of synthetic resins, while the luthiers dig in the past trying to reconstruct these inimitable varnishes of the Cremona luthiers golden age. A brief reflection will be done on the conservation and restoration of musical instruments, and what should be the main focus; at the continuous use of them or the conservation as an unique object.
