Piisanumericalconstantthatrepresentstheratioofacircle'scircumferencetoitsdiameteronaflatplane
surface.Thevalueisthesameregardlessofthesizeofthecircle.Thedecimalexpansionofpiisa
nonterminating,nonrepeatingsequenceofdigits.Formostcalculations,thevaluecanbetakenas3.14159.
Thismeans,forexample,thatacirclewithadiameterof10centimeters,asmeasuredonaflatsurface,hasa
circumferenceofapproximately31.4159centimeters.
Thenumberpiisalsotheratioofthediameterofaspheretothelengthofanygreatcircle(geodesic)onthe
sphere.So,forexample,iftheearthisconsideredtobeaperfectspherewithadiameterof8,000miles,then
thedistancearoundtheearth,asmeasuredalongtheequatororalonganygreatcircle,isapproximately8,000
x3.14159,or25,133miles.
Piisanirrationalnumber.Itcannotbepreciselydefinedastheratioofanytwowholenumbers.Thus,its
decimalexpansionhasnopatternandneverends.Thefirstfewhundred,thousand,million,orbilliondigitsof
