IEEE Student Branch of Kalasalingam University, Krishnankoil through EEE Dept

organized a two days Workshop on Modeling and Simulation of Solar PV system Using
MATLAB on 21st & 22nd July, 2016. The inaugural function of the workshop was conducted at 9.30
AM on 21.07.2016. Dr D. Devaraj, Dean, Academics and IEEE Student Branch Counselor
welcomed the gathering and gave an overview of the workshop. Dr. V. Saravanan, Professor,
Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Thiagarajar college of Engineering,
inaugurated the workshop and delivered the inaugural address. In his address, he elaborated the role
of Electrical Engineers to act as the energy consultant in the field of grid integrated Renewable
Energy System. Dr. S. Shasi Anand, Director, Kalasalingam University felicitated the gathering and
in his address, he pointed out the needs of the solar PV system to meet out the future energy
requirement of our country and appreciated the efforts of Kalasalingam University IEEE Branch in
organizing technical events for the benefit of the students.
The resource persons for the program were Dr. V. Saravanan, Professor, Department of
Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Thiagarajar college of Engineering; Dr. K. G. Punitha,
Professor and HoD, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, PSRR college of Engineering for
Women; Mr. Sheik Mohammed, Assistant Professor, Dofhar University, Omen.
The topics covered included: Introduction to Solar PV system, Modeling Of Solar PV cell/module,
Simulation of Solar Cell and Module Using MATLAB/Simulink, Power Converters for Solar PV
Using MATLAB, Simulation of Power Converter, MPPT Algorithm for Solar Energy System. In
addition the participants were given hands-on training using MATLAB.
Students from Kalasalingam University and participants from various colleges attended this
two days program. The program received excellent feedback from all the participants. This
Workshop provided an excellent opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Solar PV system. Dr. K.
G. Punitha, Professor and HoD, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, PSRR college of
Engineering distributed the certificates to the participants. Mr. S. Venkatesh, Secretary, IEEE
Student Branch, Kalasalingam University proposed the vote of thanks.

10 How the knowledge gained will be used for benefit of stake holders (Students,
faculty etc.)
Students gained knowledge in doing practical work on modeling and simulation of Solar
PV system. The knowledge gained by this workshop will benefit the students to do their
projects effectively. Also this workshop paves the way to do further research on this work
and to present papers on symposium and conferences.
