Dynamite is an example of a secondary explosive. It is insensitive compared to other explosives and so needs a
greater amount of energy to initiate a reaction.
Dynamite is primarily nitroglycerin mixed with powdered silica in a paste form.
General Recommendations
It is recommended that explosives such as dynamite are stored in an environment of around 40% RH humidity.
Solutions
In order to safely store the Dynamite the following conditions could be maintained.
Humidity control by means of a commercial grade dehumidifier
Heating and cooling packages
Insulation packages when purchasing heating and cooling packages
Furnishing and wiring of IDS systems
Exterior/interior lighting, load center and disconnect (all electrical work must be intrinsically safe)
Aluminum work benches, aluminum shelving or wood shelving for non-static production
Solutions
Bry-Air's recommendation is to install a Bry-Air desiccant dehumidifier as they are capable of maintaining dew point
as low as -60C regardless of ambient conditions. Dynamite that is stored under warm, wet and/ or humid
conditions deteriorate quickly. For longer shelf life of dynamite it is essential that it does not absorb any moisture
from the atmosphere during storage.
It is essential that relative humidity is controlled below 40% RH.
