WWDC: All the big

news from WWDC 16
This years keynote was two hours long. Caitlin MacGarry
reveals the big announcements you may have missed

pples Worldwide Developers Conference

keynote was packed with announcements,
from all the features coming in iOS 10
to a new iPad coding app for beginners (Swift
Playgrounds). Heres everything you need to know.

iOS 10
iOS 10 includes major upgrades to iMessage,
Photos, Siri, Maps, and Apple Music, and a new
4 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109

Home app to control all of your HomeKit devices.

Check out all the announcements here.
The iOS 10 developer beta is available now,
with a public beta coming in July. Anyone can sign
up to test the public beta for free, though beta
software can be annoying and bug-ridden. Check
out the beta sign-up details here. iOS 10 launches
publicly in September.

macOS Sierra
Goodbye, OS X. Hello, macOS. The next-generation
Mac operating system has a new name, macOS
Sierra, but most of the same great features, with
some extras to boot everything from Siri and
Apple Pay integration to iCloud Drive desktop
access and picture-in-picture (an iPad feature we
love and cant wait to use on the Mac). Like iOS 10,
macOS Sierra officially rolls out in September, but
developers can beta test the software starting now
and a public beta launches in July.

watchOS 3
The Apple Watch was in desperate need of an
upgrade, because everything about it is slow. It
sounds like watchOS 3 will fix most of those speed
issues, with an instant app launcher, background
refresh, an app-switching dock, new fitness
features such as activity-sharing with friends, and
easier messaging thanks to a handwriting-to-text
tool called Scribble. Apple even made the Watch
more accessible with fitness features for people
who use wheelchairs, recognizing that some
owners need settings that go beyond traditional
workouts and stand notifications.

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 5

20/06/2016 11:48

Like iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, watchOS 3 is now

available for developers to beta test, with a public
launch this autumn. No public beta will be available.

tvOS 10
Apple didnt announce an unbundled live TV
streaming service, but the Apple TV is getting a big
update with tvOS 10. The biggest feature is single
sign-in, so you can enter your cable subscription
information one time instead of per app, but there
are tons of improvements like live tune-in, dark
mode, HomeKit control, and YouTube search.
tvOS 10 is now available in developer beta and
will roll out this autumn to the public. No public
beta will be available.

A few more things

The keynote was two hours long,
so you may have missed some cool,
smaller announcements. Heres
what else you need to know: Apple
Pay is coming to the web. iCloud
Drive will change how you store files
on the Mac. Theres a new Home
app for controlling your HomeKit
appliances. Siri is opening up to
third-party apps. Apple Music is
getting a redesign and a Spotifyesque weekly discover mix. Apple
wants to teach kids how to code
with the iPad app Swift Playgrounds.
In iOS 10, native apps can be
deleted. Finally.

WWDC: iOS 10
iOS brings emojification of Messages and third-party app
integrations in Siri, Maps, and more, reveals Oscar Raymundo

ptly enough, iOS 10 has 10 major features,

including sweeping new upgrades to
Messages, a much more intelligent Siri,
and a Memories feature in Photos that recognizes
objects, people, and even locations.
Introduced during Apples WWDC keynote, iOS
10 also makes the iPhone sublimely integrated
with third-party apps. Developers can now design
apps to directly enhance Messages, Siri, Maps, and
Notifications. Theres also better integration for
VoIP calling and a brand-new Home app.
Apples most noticeable update comes to
Messages, which the company said is the most
frequently used app on iOS. In addition to opening
up the iMessage platform to third-party developers,
Messages in iOS 10 has gone through a major
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 7

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 7

20/06/2016 11:48

emojification. Emoji sent by themselves are three

times bigger, and with iOS 10 its easy to simply
tap-and-replace certain keywords with emojis.
Messages has other visual enhancements,
including rich links and in-line video and Apple
Music playback, as well as bubble effects, fullscreen effects, handwritten messages, Digital
Touch interactive greeting cards, Tap Back for
quickly responding to a text, and Invisible Ink that
you can swipe away to reveal a message or photo.
Other major Apple services that were opened
up to developers include Siri and Maps. With Siri
on iOS 10, you can now do something as simple
as request an Uber or enable another third-party
app thanks to the just-released SiriKit. Next-level
Siri intelligence was also brought to QuickType,
so whenever you get a text asking where you are,
Siri will suggest dropping a pin, as well as store
recent addresses, access your calendar availability,
and offer multilingual support without having to
change keyboards.
And with Maps extensions, you can make a
reservation using OpenTable without leaving the
Maps app. Additionally, Maps has gotten more
proactive Navigation so you can see the traffic
on the route ahead or spot any upcoming gas
stations or restaurants.
Apple also spruced up its Phone app in iOS 10.
Most notably, theres a new voicemail transcription
service that transcribes audio voicemails into text,
as well as new detection of potential voicemail
spam. Apple also introduced a VoIP API, so
that whenever you receive a call from Skype or
WhatsApp, it will look like a native Phone call.
8 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 8

20/06/2016 11:48

Theres also a brand-new Home app to control

all your HomeKit-enabled devices around the
house. In addition to tapping your devices on or
off, you can use Home to set specific Scenes, like
closing the shades and locking the front door
before going to bed.
Other native apps like Apple Music, Photos,
and News also got updated. Besides a new look,
Apple Music now has integrated song lyrics.
Photos has a new Memories tab that stitches
together your photos based on facial recognition
and location thats all stored on-device to protect
your privacy. And News will let you read paidsubscriptions like National Geographic and The
Wall Street Journal. Plus, youll be able to view
conversations in Mail, edit your Live Photos, and
use Split View in Safari for iPad.
In terms of user experience, iOS 10 brought a
redesigned lock screen and Control Center, moreinteractive Notifications, and better implementation
of 3D Touch. From the lock screen you can now
access your Camera by swiping from the right,
and see all your widgets by swiping from the left.
The Control Center is now multi-page, so you can
control just Apple Music or Home by swiping to
the left. And 3D Touch lets you do more with your
Notifications on iOS 10. For example, you can reply
to a Message or accept a Calendar invitation.

WWDC: 20 reasons to
get excited about iOS 10
iOS 10 is packed with new features, hidden functionalities and
third-party app integrations, enthuses Oscar Raymundo
1. Photos recognises
faces without being creepy
Photos on iOS 10 is now a lot like Google Photos:
using face, object and scene recognition, so you
can search your camera by person, location or
topic. However, Photos uses only machine learning
to analyse the photos as theyre stored locally on
your iPhone. Furthermore, it uses this technology to
create Memories by stitching related photos and
videos together, and adding a soundtrack.

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 10

20/06/2016 11:48

2. Voicemail upgrades in Phone

In iOS 10, the iPhone also gets some much-needed
upgrades in terms of a core functionality, the
Phone app. Both of our favorite new features are
voicemail-related. First we have the beta launch
of Voicemail transcription that translates your
audio voicemails into text. Second, via a CallKit,
developers can create extensions to detect
voicemail spam.

3. Phone support for VoIP services

Apple knows that we now use different services for
making voice calls, from Facebook Messenger to
Slack to Skype to WhatsApp. So in order to create
a more seamless user experience, all those thirdparty VoIP calls will resemble native Phone calls in
iOS 10. These calls will be saved in your Recents
and Favorites, as well. And your Contacts will be
updated so that you can call your friends via each
ones favorite third-party VoIP services.

4. Attack of the emoji in Messages

For starters, emoji sent by themselves are now
three times bigger in iOS 10. For emoji diehards,
iOS 10 can now suggest which words in your text
you can substitute for their corresponding emoji.
After writing your message, tap on the emoji button
and every instance where a word can be replaced
by an emoji will be highlighted. Simply tap to
replace and send your emojified message.

5. Rich links in Messages

Another way that Apple has made Messages more
visual is by offering support for rich links. When
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 11
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 11

20/06/2016 11:48

you send a web URL, for example, iMessage will

pull up an accompanying image from the website.
This also works when you share a link to an Apple
Music track.

6. Siri is now open to developers

Apple has turned to third-party developers to help
make Siri a lot smarter. With a brand-new Siri SDK,
or SiriKit, Apples intelligent assistant can now
access other apps like Lyft, WeChat, and Square
Cash. Before iOS 10, Siri was limited to helping
you out if you wanted to tap primarily into your
iPhones native apps.

7. Discovery Mix in Apple Music

Apple Music has a brand-new look in iOS 10, but
one of the most exciting features is a Discovery
Mix playlist that will feature new music catered
to your listening habits. Yes, its near identical to
Discover Weekly, the Spotify playlist feature. But
thats a good thing.

8. Lyrics in Apple Music

The other standout feature in the new Apple Music
update is the integration of song lyrics. When
listening to a track, swipe up to see the lyrics.
However, it remains to be seen if Apple has scored
deals with every publisher so that all the songs in
their catalogue will have this new lyrics feature, or if
youll be stuck humming some of your tunes.

9. 3D Touch actions for Notifications

Thanks to 3D Touch on iOS 10, you can interact with
new super-dynamic Notifications even right from
12 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 12

20/06/2016 11:48

your iPhones Lock Screen. Use 3D Touch to reply

to a Message, accept a Calendar invite, or even
see where your Uber is on a map. And from the
Notifications screen, you can also use 3D Touch to
clear all your notifications at once.

10. App widgets

Thats right: iOS 10 finally gives iPhone users
handy-dandy widgets that can be accessed
by swiping right. These widgets are animated,
expandable, and can even play videos and other
multimedia, like a sports clip. To add a widget,
simply use 3D Touch on your favorite app icon like
Weather or ESPN and then tap to Add Widget.

11. Uninstall native apps we never use

Turns out, we will no longer need an app folder
titled Useless Crap. Apple didnt mention this
during the WWDC keynote, but it later confirmed
that youll be able to delete certain native apps in
iOS 10. Which apps?
Stocks, of course, but
also Calculator, Notes,
Maps, and many
more. But beware:
Removing a native
app may have some
consequences. Our
ultimate desire is the
ability to designate
a third-party option
like Google Maps as
the default app in
place of Maps.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 13
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 13

20/06/2016 11:48

12. Intelligent suggestions in QuickType

QuickType is also getting smarter in iOS 10. For
example, if someone texts you asking where you
are, QuickType will suggest to drop a pin of your
current location. When someone asks for a friends
phone number or email, QuickType will surface
the correct contact info stored in your Contacts.
And if someone asks if youre available at a certain
time, QuickType will check your Calendar and let
you know your availability or tap into intelligent
scheduling to create an event based on contextual
information from the entire message thread.

13. Multilingual keyboard support

In addition to surfacing intelligent responses,
QuickType now has multilingual support, which
means that it will make its suggestions in whatever
language youre typing, even if you didnt bother
to switch to that languages official keyboard.

14. Apple Pay on the

(mobile) web
You can now more make
purchases online using Apple
Pay. In iOS 10, Apple Pay
becomes a payment option
in supported sites in Mobile
Safari. If you have Apple Pay
set up on your device, all youll
need to do is tap on the Buy
with Apple Pay button and use
Touch ID to authenticate the
purchase. No more fetching for
your credit card ever again.
14 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109

20/06/2016 11:48

15. New Home app for

controlling HomeKit devices
Apple has released a brand-new app as part of
iOS 10, and its called Home. This new app (also
available for watchOS) is designed to control all
your HomeKit-enabled accessories in the home.
In addition to tapping devices on or off, you can
create and select certain Scenes depending
on the time of day. And these Scenes can also
be activated via Siri voice commands. Tell Siri
goodnight, for example, and Home will adjust
the thermostat and lock the front door.

16. Proactive navigation in Maps

Have you ever been on the road and tried to search
for something on the way while using turn-by-turn
Navigation? Most likely it has been the nearest InN-Out, and chances are that Maps will find the one
that you just passed. In iOS 10, navigating in Maps
gets more proactive, so you will be able to better
assess the traffic conditions and find important pit
stops, from gas stations to coffee shops, on the way
to your final destination. Maps will even give you an
updated estimate of how each stop will impact the
length of your trip.

17. Third-party extensions in Maps

In iOS 10, Maps becomes your one-stop-shop,
thanks to Apple opening it up to third-party
app developers to create custom extensions.
For example, you can find a restaurant on the
map, make a reservation using OpenTable, and
request an Uber to take you there, all without
leaving the Maps app.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 15
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 15

20/06/2016 11:48

18. Multipage support in Control Center

The Control Center on iOS is a quick way to get to
our most-used functionalities, but it was getting a
little jam-packed. For iOS 10, Apple has redesigned
the Control Center to have more breathing room by
creating different control pages. At WWDC, Apple
showed us we could swipe left and right on the
Control Center to get to the Apple Music controls
and your HomeKit-enabled devices.

19. Live Photos improvements

Apple is also giving iPhone users a way to edit Live
Photos in iOS 10. Youll be able to trim the clip, add
a filter, and select the still frame. Live Photos now
also have digital video image stabilization, so they
are nice and smooth.

20. Split View in Safari (iPad only)

Apples new iOS 10 brings Split View to Safari on
iPad. This means that you can view and interact
with two Safari windows side-by-side.

WWDC: Siri SDK to

boost Apples assistant
Apple opens Siri to third-party apps, writes Caitlin MacGarry

our iPhone isnt exactly difficult to use

as-is, but imagine if you voiced commands
such as Call an Uber or Check savings
account balance and your phone jumped into
action without your having to lift a finger. Having a
conversation with your iPhone is about to become
the norm, thanks to the launch of Apples new
Siri software development kit, which will finally let
third-party app developers give
the voice-activated digital assistant
more intelligence.
Craig Federighi, Apples
senior vice president of software
engineering, used the messaging
app WeChat to demonstrate Siris
new powers at the Worldwide
Developers Conference keynote.
Just give Siri a command as
you normally would and mention
the name of the app you want
to use. If the app is integrated
with Siri, Siri handles all of the
legwork of performing whatever
task you need. In the WeChat
example, Federighi said, Send
a WeChat to Nancy saying Ill
be five minutes late. The Siri
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 17

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 17

20/06/2016 11:48

interface for third-party apps is rich, with preview

cards showing the app screen accomplishing
what youve asked for.
The Siri SDK is rolling out with iOS 10, which
officially launches this autumn but will be open to
developers over the summer so they can improve
their apps. Apple has major partners lined up at
launch. Youll be able to hail rides with Uber, Lyft,
and Didi in China; send messages through Slack,
WeChat, and WhatsApp; search for photos in
Shutterfly and Pinterest, pause and start workouts
in MapMyRun, Runtastic and Runkeeper; send
payments to friends with Square Cash; and make
calls using Skype and Vonage. Siris third-party
support also works with CarPlay, so you can make
calls and send texts using those apps without
having to use your hands.
The long-rumoured and oft-requested SDK was
the centrepiece of Apples Worldwide Developers
Conference keynote, and for good reason. Giving
developers access to Siri is the only way for
Apple to compete with Amazons Alexa assistant,
the anchor of the companys Echo hub, and with
Google Assistant, which will serve as the Alexa
for Googles own hub, Google Home.
Other companies are nipping on Apples
heels with their own machine learning-powered
assistants. Siris founders have their own solution,
Viv, and an iOS app called Hound is doing more
than Siri can do, and faster.
As iPhone sales growth slows, Cupertino needs
to make its phones more compelling, and not just
on the hardware side. Making Siri smarter and
more capable is one way to accomplish that.

WWDC: Apple to let you

delete some built-in apps
Apple relocates some apps to the Store. Susie Ochs reports

pples WWDC 2016 keynote showed

off some new apps for iOS 10, but then
revealed that some familiar apps, including
Stocks, Calendar and Mail, would be available in
the App Store. The full list is:

Stocks
Weather
Mail
Notes
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 19
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 19

20/06/2016 11:48

Maps
Voice Memos
Watch
Music
FaceTime
Calendar
Contacts
Videos
iTunes Store
Compass
Tips
Calculator
Of course, those are already on your iPhone
theyre on every iPhone so right now the Get
button is greyed out. But according to Apple, in iOS
10 youll be able to delete them, and then reinstall
them from the store if you want to use them again.
Not every app will be deletable. If you remove
the Contacts app, for example, your contacts
will still show up in the Phone app. But the iPad
doesnt have the Phone app, so you cant delete
the Contacts app from your iPad. And if you remove
Stocks or Weather, you wont be able to see their
widgets in Notification Center.
Being able to designate certain third-party
apps as default choices for things like mapping,
email, calendars, and contacts would be a huge
step forward for iOS its something weve
envied about the Android platform for years.
That doesnt mean its going to happen in iOS 10,
though. These apps might still be the defaults,
but Apple will update them independently of the
rest of the operating system.

WWDC: Apple Music

Caitlin McGarry looks at how Apple is simplifying
its music streaming service in iOS 10

pple Music has 15 million paying

subscribers, which is nothing to sneeze at.
But Apples Spotify competitor isnt easy to
use, so iOS 10 is bringing a complete redesign.
Its a totally new look, with giant cards, bigger
and bolder fonts, and a clean white background
that allows the album art to shine.
The first tab when you open Apple Music in iOS
10 is your Library, which makes the most sense.
Currently Apple Music buries your library of songs
under My Music on the far right side, then further
divides it into two sections, Library and Playlists.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 21

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 21

20/06/2016 11:48

The categories are nonexistent, and its easier

to search for something you have saved than to
browse your own library. Thats about to change.
The Apple Music library in iOS 10 is divided into
five sections: playlists, artists, albums, songs,
and downloaded music. Downloaded music,
which is brand new, is where youll find every
song you have downloaded.
Apple Music is adding lyrics to songs in your
library in the mini player when youre listening
to a song, which is a solid design decision that
cuts down on clutter (something Spotify still
struggles with).
For You is getting a revamp, too, and not just
a new look. In addition to the curated playlists
that Apple Music always recommends to you, the
streaming service is adding a Discovery Mix to
the top of the list. That playlist is designed to take
on Spotifys popular Discover Weekly feature, a
totally personalized playlist that refreshes every
week. For You also stashes your recently played
tunes and daily curated playlists.
Connect isnt going away, though Apple
Musics social feature for musicians will no longer
have its own tab in the app. Instead, material
from artists you follow will show up in For You.
Thats not a change Im sure I can believe in,
but as long as Connect isnt taking up useful
navigation space, it might not be so bad. A new
search tab replaces Connect.
Browse replaces New in the menu, making it a
little easier to find the latest and greatest music.
Browse puts a Hot Album at the top of the screen,
so you know what everyone else is listening to.
22 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 22

20/06/2016 11:49

Theres also New Music, Top Charts, Curated

Playlists, and more ways to comb through tunes.
The one Apple Music feature that isnt changing:
Radio. Beats 1 still anchors the section, which
also lets you queue up stations based on artist or
genre. And popular Beats 1 shows like Elton Johns
Rocket Hour arent going anywhere, either.
Apple Musics simplified interface and
Discovery Mix might make it more appealing
to people who are new to streaming, though
its doubtful the company will poach any diehard Spotify fans. Its also unclear if Apple has
resolved Apple Musics most misunderstood
feature: how it integrates with your library of
owned music via iCloud Music Library.
Apple Musics major upgrade is part of iOS 10,
which launches this autumn.

WWDC: Messages
Apple is letting third-party developers turn iMessage
into a WeChat clone, writes Oscar Raymundo

moji, stickers, and bubble effects. Apple has

opened the floodgates of its most popular
app in iOS 10.
At WWDC, Apple revealed that iOS 10 is making
the Messages app way more visual and emojifriendly, just as the overall iMessage platform will
begin to integrate third-party apps. Developers will
be able to create apps specifically for iMessage
that will let you send stickers or perform certain
group-actions right from the
Messages app.
In terms of style, Messages
is getting a major emojification
in iOS 10. Emoji that are sent by
themselves (meaning without
accompanying text) are three times
bigger. And you will get emoji
suggestions as you type.
Messages will also let you
replace certain keywords with
emojis compose a message, then
press the emoji button, and the
app will highlight all the words that
have a corresponding emoji. Tap
on the highlighted words to replace
them with said emoji. So a phrase
like, the monkey likes pizza, gets
translated into, the wants .

24 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 24

20/06/2016 11:49

Children of tomorrow will have no concept

of the English language, said Craig Federighi,
Apples senior VP of software engineering, while
demonstrating the new Messages during the
WWDC keynote.
In addition, Messages will let you say it loud
or whisper with large or small Bubble Effects. If
you really want to go overboard, there are also
full-screen effects, like fireworks that burst in the
background. In addition, you can send handwritten
messages, Digital Touch interactive cards, your
heartbeat, and even Tap Back to add a quick emoji
response to a specific messages.
Theres also a feature called Invisible Ink that will
send a hidden text or photo that the recipient then
has to swipe in order to decipher. Lastly, any URL
you send in Messages will get a visual treatment,
with artwork taken from the website. And videos
and Apple Music links will play inline. Plus, its
easier to attach a photo or video from your camera
roll, or even take a new video and photo to send.
All that is only what Apple has done to the
Messages app natively. In iOS 10, third-party
developers will also be able to create apps
designed specifically to be linked to iMessage.
The most obvious examples are stickers and
multimedia cards that incorporate your videos and
photos, but Apple also demonstrated a case study
where a group of friends could all compile and
submit a food order without leaving the Messages
app. In order to accommodate these third-party

WWDC: iCloud Drive to

offer desktop sharing
Updated iCloud to add sharing options, reports Joel Mathis

he updated version of iCloud Drive will

automatically store your Macs older
documents in the cloud, Apple officials
announced at WWDC, making room on your hard
drive for new and recently used files.
The iCloud update will offer an optimised
storage feature that also automatically dumps
trash, cleans up old caches, and removes other
redundant data to help preserve storage on your
Mac; a demo of the feature showed it taking a
computer with 20GB of free space and increasing
that to 150GB of free space.
iCloud will also make it possible for users to
share items on their Mac desktops to other Macs,
as well as to their iPhones. Users have already
stored more than 10 billion documents on iCloud.

WWDC: Apple HomeKit

Home app for iOS brings quick controls, lock screen shortcuts

framework for smart home devices,
Apple is releasing a dedicated Home
app to control them. The Home app in iOS 10 will
provide quick access to all of the users smart
lights, door locks, thermostats and more. Users will
be able to launch custom scenes (which group
together multiple device actions into concepts such
as Good Morning) with one tap, and view a master
list of devices for individual control.
Apples official Home app will support remote
control smart home devices, provided the user has
a third-generation Apple TV or newer. (The Apple

WWDC: Swift Playgrounds

Intimidated by the idea of coding? Swift Playgrounds makes
learning to code more approachable, writes Roman Loyola

t was a developers conference, after all, so

during Apples WWDC 2016 keynote, Tim Cook
called special attention to Swift Playgrounds, a
free new app for beginners who want to create iOS
apps using Swift, Apples programming language.
Swift Playgrounds features lessons to help
beginners learn coding concepts such as creating
functions, issuing commands, loops, and more.
Apple will release new challenges, so coders can
continue to learn new skills as they progress.
Apple says that teachers can use Xcode to create
their own content for Swift Playgrounds. The

28 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109

interactive, intuitive interface has support for

Apples Multi-Touch iPad interface. It has a coding
keyboard with a shortcuts bar, and you can swipe
across a key to type Swift-specific characters.
Theres also a pop-over keypad for numbers, a
colour picker, and more. To implement code from
the library, you can drag and drop.
Swift Playgrounds is an environment for coders
to learn how to make iOS apps. However, you
dont actually build apps within Swift Playgrounds.
Any code created in Swift Playground can be
exported and then brought into Xcode, where the
code can be used to make an actual iOS app.
Developers can get Swift Playgrounds as
part of the iOS 10 developer preview. Apple will
release a public beta in July, and a final version
will ship in the autumn.

WWDC: watchOS 3
Apple is solving its biggest Apple Watch issue,
super-slow apps, writes Caitlin McGarry

he Apple Watchs biggest problems are its

apps, namely the time it takes for them to
load, and the limited features developers are
allowed to bake in. Apple is fixing these issues with
a major overhaul to watchOS, coming this autumn
as a free upgrade for all Apple Watch owners.
During the Worldwide Developers Conference
keynote, Apple previewed a slew of new features
coming to watchOS 3. Here are the major changes
that will breathe new life into your Apple Watch.

First things first: faster apps

Every Apple Watch owner knows the struggle of
launching apps. By the time the app opens, youve
given up and turned to your iPhone for help.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 31
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 31

20/06/2016 11:49

Apple Watch apps will launch instantly in watchOS

3, and not just Apples native apps third-party
ones, too. Your favourite apps will be kept in the
watchs memory and update automatically in the
background, so you always see the most up-to-date
information without having to stare at the spinning
wheel of death. Apples technology VP Kevin Lynch
said apps will launch seven times faster in watchOS
3 than watchOS 2.
The Apple Watch is also getting its own app
switcher, just like in iOS. You can put your mostused apps in a dock and swipe between them. In
the dock, youll see the most recent information at
a glance, which is much more useful than the slowloading Glances view.
Apple is bringing its native Reminders and Find
My Friends apps to the Watch so you can view
your to-do lists and check them off and see how
far away your friends (or, more likely, your family)
are from you.
The Apple Watch has supported Apple Pay since
day one, but now third-party app developers will be
able to integrate Apple Pay as a payment option in
their apps, which wasnt available before.

Bringing competition to workouts

One of the Apple Watchs most-used apps is
Activity, which shows you how close you are
to reaching your daily fitness goals with those
addictive rings. Apple is giving those features
a huge upgrade in watchOS 3 with a Fitbit-like
feature: competition. The next-gen operating
system will put an activity-sharing feature on
the watch. How it works: Swipe to the right
32 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 32

20/06/2016 11:49

of your activity rings to see your friends and

familys rings. You can sort the list by step count,
workouts, and exercise minutes, or tap on a specific
person to see how active theyve been that day.
Youll be able to send messages directly within
the Activity app with new pre-written smart replies
geared toward encouraging (or smack-talking)
your contacts activity.
Apple is at the forefront of developing features
with accessibility for all users in mind, which is
why watchOS 3s Activity app has new settings
for wheelchair users. Apple conducted studies on
how Apple Watch owners in wheelchairs use their
watches and will put the results of those studies
in the next-gen OS. Activity rings will recognize
wheelchair pushes, two workouts in the Workout
app are designed for wheelchair users, and therell
be an option for time to roll notifications instead
of hourly time to stand ones.
The Apple Watch is also getting a brand-new
health app called Breathe, which guides you

ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 33

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 33

20/06/2016 11:49

through meditative, deep-breathing exercises. The

new app can be launched from the watch face,
dock, or through notifications that remind you to
breathe. You can adjust the length of a session
using the Digital Crown and take advantage of
haptic feedback for vibrations that will guide you
through each breath.
One more thing: Your favourite third-party
fitness apps will now be able to run natively in the
background for workouts, which means theyll get
access to all of the watchs sensors, like heart rate
data, while youre working out.

Messaging, Minnie Mouse, and more

App speed and new fitness features are watchOS
3s biggest upgrades, but Apple is adding a ton of
small tweaks that will make the Watch easier to use.
Theres a new Control Center view, so you can
swipe up from the bottom of your watch screen for
quick access to settings, just like on your iPhone.
Messaging is also getting easier in watchOS
3 you wont have to tap Reply before selecting
a way to respond. Theres also a brand-new way
to send a message called Scribble. Theres still no
Apple Watch keyboard (which is a good thing), but
instead of selecting a pre-written reply or dictating
a voice response, youll be able to scrawl letters on
the screen, which the watch will then turn into text.
I can see myself using Apple Watch messages far
more often with this option. Scribble will work in
English or Mandarin.
Apple said people switch watch faces according
to occasion, so its bringing new options to
watchOS 3. Theres a new face called Numerals, a
34 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 34

20/06/2016 11:49

dancing Minnie Mouse to complement the existing

Mickey face, and watch faces designed around
activity rings, so you can see your daily rings in
analog, chronograph, or digital versions. The
next-gen watchOS also includes the ability to add
Complications to faces, so you can see Weather
on a photo, for instance.
The watchOS 3 feature you may never have to
use but might save your life is called SOS. If you
press and hold the side button, your watch will
call emergency responders in any country using
your iPhones cellular connection or Wi-Fi, if your
watch is connected to a network. The SOS feature
will alert your emergency contacts that youre in
trouble and send your location to them. It will also
display your Medical ID on your watch face so first
responders will have access to your essential info.
One watchOS 3 feature well be using all the
time doesnt even require you to do anything. Your
Mac will sense when your Apple Watch is nearby
and unlock itself, no password required.
watchOS 3 will be released this autumn.

Feature: Your next iPhone

could have Intel inside
Apple may use Intel modems in some upcoming phones,
diversifying its suppliers. Agam Shah reports

ntel has missed out on the iPhone party until now,

ceding big business to other chip makers in the
process. But that could be about to change.
Apple will use modems from Intel in some
models of its next smartphone, replacing chips
from Qualcomm, according a recent Bloomberg
report. An Intel modem will go into iPhones for
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 49

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 49

20/06/2016 11:49

the AT&T Wireless network in the US and in some

international versions, the report says.
If true, it would be a big win for Intel, especially
after its decision to cancel its upcoming Atom chips
for phones. Intel has kept its modem business
alive, in part because it hopes to capitalize on the
upcoming move to 5G networks.
Chips from Qualcomm will still be used in
iPhones for the Verizon Wireless network and in
handsets sold in China, according to Bloomberg,
which cited unnamed sources. Qualcomm
supplies all the main modem components for
iPhones sold today.
The next iPhone, expected to be called the
iPhone 7, is due this autumn.

Why the switch?

It wont be the first time a major phone maker
has used different chips in different regions. In
the US, Samsungs Galaxy S7 uses Qualcomms
Snapdragon 820, which has an integrated
modem, while in Europe and Asia it uses its
homegrown Exynos chips.
One factor in Apples decision could be that
it likes to use multiple suppliers, meaning its
not at the mercy of one vendor if it decides to
raise prices, said Jim McGregor, principal analyst
at Tirias Research. Intel may also have offered
discounts to Apple, he said. It did something
similar with tablet chips used in Android devices,
though with mixed success.
Carriers sometimes have a say in the technology
used in handsets on their network, and Verizon
may have insisted on the continued use of
50 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 50

20/06/2016 11:49

Qualcomm parts of it thinks the technology is a

better fit, McGregor said.

Which is better?
In terms of performance, Qualcomm is widely
acknowledged to have more advanced modems
than Intel. In January, Qualcomm announced its X16
LTE modem, which the company claims supports
download speeds of almost 1Gb/s. Intels latest
XMM7480 reaches download speeds of 450Mb/s.
By working with both Qualcomm and Intel, Apple
will be best positioned to switch to 5G as soon as
either company is ready to deliver.
For Apple, choosing a new modem could mean
design changes and getting its phones requalified
for networks in multiple countries, making it no
small decision, said Nathan Brookwood, principal
analyst at Insight 64.
It didnt have many alternative suppliers to
choose from. Qualcomm and Intel lead the market,
with Mediateks technology lagging behind.
By working with both Qualcomm and Intel, Apple
will be best positioned to switch to 5G as soon as
either company is ready to deliver, Brookwood said.
5G will bring speed improvements as well as better
support for the IoT and smart home devices. Apple
may also be looking to use carrier aggregation,
which can boost wireless network speeds.
Eventually, Apple may create its own modem
chip to integrate with its A-series processors,
much as Samsung does today. That can help boost
performance and extend battery life, but raises
challenges when the combined chip has to be
qualified for networks worldwide.

Feature: Apple and

Cisco set to team up
The partnership could start later this year, says Agam Shah

pple and Cisco Systems have fleshed out

their plans to make iOS devices work better
in enterprises and said the new capabilities
will arrive in the autumn.
Voice calls on Ciscos Spark collaboration app
will act like regular phone calls, IT departments will
be able to give Cisco apps priority on iOS devices,
and iPhone calls will run over corporate networks.
These are some of the ways the two companies
technologies will mesh in enterprises.

Cisco announced the coming features on

Monday after Apples Worldwide Developer
Conference keynote. Theyll ship in a version
of Cisco Spark updated for iOS 10. Apple also
touched on the news at WWDC as one of very few
enterprise announcements at the show.
The partnership could help Apple gain a
foothold in more enterprises and rub off some of its
consumer cachet on Cisco. But to get the most out
of the integration, customers will have to buy into
both vendors technologies in a significant way.
They will offer deep integration between iPhones
and the Spark messaging and voice platform. An
incoming Spark call will ring on the lock screen just
like a cellular call and users will be able to tap on a
contact in the address book to contact them over
Spark. Siri will also be able to set up that call. Mute
and call waiting will work on Spark calls, too.
If employees make a regular call to someone
on the corporate directory, it can automatically be
carried over a Cisco corporate LAN, potentially
cutting cell bills but also allowing the enterprise to
log those calls for regulatory compliance.
IT administrators will be able to give enterprise
applications like Spark or WebEx priority over
others that might command an iPhone or iPads
resources. For example, if one employee is
streaming YouTube videos over the corporate
network and another wants to do a WebEx meeting
on an Apple device at the same time, company
policy will be able to give the work app preference.
Apple mobile devices will also be able to find the
best available access point on any Cisco network in
the office or on the road.

Feature: Must-have apps

for the iPad road warrior
With Jason Ciprianis apps, youll be able to tackle any task

hese apps can help you get some serious

work done without a computer. Whether
youre on a business trip and forced to
connect to random Wi-Fi networks, or youre
spending the day at a local coffee shop for a
change of scenery, you can remain productive
while keeping your data safe and secure.

Protect your data

Something we hardly think about when were at
home or in the office is someone snooping on our
54 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 54

20/06/2016 11:49

Wi-Fi traffic, looking for bits and pieces of personal

information as we go about our daily tasks.
But when youre using public Wi-Fi networks, you
should constantly think about just that scenario.
Youve probably used one without even thinking
twice about it I know I used to all the time. But
recently, Ive started to use VPN apps when Im not
home, in an effort to protect my personal data.
Routing your Internet traffic through a VPN will
encrypt important data, rendering it useless to
would-be bad guys. Some apps can even block ads
and trackers in addition to keeping your data safe.
Not too shabby, right?
The App Store is full of VPN apps, each claiming
to be the best and the fastest. I cant vouch for

ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 55

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 55

20/06/2016 11:49

all of them, but I can tell you I havent had a bad

experience using either the free Opera VPN app or
while testing HotSpot Shield VPN.
As with all free services on the Internet, Opera
VPN does collect some of your data in anonymized
form and sells it to third-parties. But that does get
you free unlimited VPN service plus ad blocking.
HotSpot Shield also offers a free version of its
service, paid for by showing ads in the app itself.
To go ad free, you can sign up for a yearly Elite
subscription for 22.99. On top of that, HotSpots
CEO told ZDNet earlier this year the company
doesnt keep or look at your data.

Keep access to your computer

As someone who does a lot of work on an iPad Pro,
I often need to access a file or run an app I only
have on my iMac in my home office. The easiest
way to do this is to use an app like Screens.
Screens (14.99 in the App Store) lets you
remotely connect to, and take over, a Mac or PC,
from anywhere you
have an internet
connection. The app
is super simple to
set up, requiring you
to install Screens
Connect on your
computer and
connect it to your
account.
From there,
Screens does the
rest. You can move
56 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 56

20/06/2016 11:49

files to your iCloud Drive or Dropbox account, in

turn making them available on your iOS device. Or
you can run a full-fledged computer application on
the screen of your iPad while youre (potentially)
hundreds of miles away.
Dont think of it as cheating on your iPad Pro,
think of it as a way of unlocking its full potential.

Remember to take breaks

When you work in an office, interruptions are all too
common. Sure, they can be frustratingly common,
but at least your coworker telling you about his
weekend plans provides a quick break from the
task at hand. When working alone, its all too easy
to get wrapped up in work and hours pass without
as much as a glance up from the screen.
Instead of trying to remember when to get up
and take a break or switch tasks, install an app like
Be Focused. Using Be Focused, you can set timers
designed to help you keep track of the time you
spend on a task, then switch to another one or just
go for a walk.
There are a lot of Pomodoro-inspired apps
available for iOS users, so if you find Be Focused
doesnt work for you, keep searching until you find
the right one.

What works for you?

I have found using these apps have made travelling
with nothing more than my iPhone and iPad Pro
something I no longer cringe about. Have you gone
iPad-only for any extended amount of time away
from the office? If so, what app or service have you
found thats made the transition easier on you?

Kirk McElhearn answers your iTunes questions

Tunes 12.4 is out, and there are lots of questions

about the major and minor changes to this
version of the app. In this weeks column, I
discuss one question about a podcast view that has
been removed from iTunes. I also look at a question
about backups, and explain how I got my iPad Pro
to load my iCloud Music Library library.

Where are my recent podcasts?

Q: There used to be a Recent Updates section
for podcasts in iTunes. I could browse it
and see which podcast episodes had been
updatedrecently. Is this gone in the latest
versionof iTunes?
A: In the past, if you were viewing My Podcasts,
there was a Recent Updates entry at the top
of the podcasts column, and you could see
podcasts as you say, from this week, this month,
and so on. Unfortunately, that has been removed
from iTunes 12.4.
If you select Podcasts from the Media Picker
(the menu near the top left of the iTunes window),
and then click Stations, you may see Most Recent.
This is a default station that iTunes creates when
you first launch it. It lists the newest episodes from
your podcasts. Click the Settings button, and then
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 59

choose which podcasts you want, and how many

episodes. If you dont have that station if youve
deleted it you can create it; just duplicate the
settings in the screenshot above.
You can create several stations for different
podcasts, if you wish. You could also create a smart
playlist for podcasts, where plays is 0, and sort it by
most recently added.
This displays your new podcast episodes, the
newest at the top. Its not the best solution, but
you may find it an adequate replacement for the
missing feature.

What should I back up?

Q: I have a master iTunes library on my iMac. It
contains ripped Apple Lossless files and AAC
files. Some of the AAC files are iTunes Store
purchases, and some are files I added from Apple

Music. I dont understand what happens when I

A: Your music your ripped CDs and your nonApple downloads, along with tracks purchased
from the iTunes Store are stored in your ~/Music/
iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder. (~ is a shortcut
for your home folder.) However, Apple Music
files even if you have downloaded them to your
computer to play when offline are not stored in
the same folder.
If you look in your ~/Music/iTunes Media
folder youll see an Apple Music folder. This
folder contains music you have downloaded
from Apple Music to listen to offline. (Music
youve streamed is stored in a different location:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.itunes.)
These files (with the .m4p extension) are copy
protected, and youll be able to play them as long
as you maintain your Apple Music subscription. If
you want to back up your iTunes library, but not the
Apple Music files, you can simply exclude the Apple
Music folder. This said, if you dont back these files
up, and lose your iTunes library, then youll need
to redownload them. If you have the space, its
probably safer to back everything up.
Regardless of the copy protection on these
files, you can copy them; the terminology isnt
really exact. Files with DRM only prevent you from
playing them on an unauthorised computer, not
copying them to another computer that you have
authorized, to an iOS device, or to a backup disk.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 61
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 61

20/06/2016 11:49

Do not, however, use a backup app to exclude

the .m4p file extension; you may still have a
handful of older purchased tracks from the iTunes
Store that havent been updated to be DRM-free.
I have some files in my iTunes library that are
DRM-free and that have the .m4p extension, and
audiobooks purchased from the iTunes Store will
also have that extension.

How can I get my iCloud

Music Library on my iPad?
Q: For a while, Ive been trying to activate iCloud
Music Library on my iPad. Every time I try to do
this, I get an error message telling me to try again
later. Is there any way I can get this to work?
A: I include this question because I had the
exact same problem this week. I did all the usual
troubleshooting steps: I restarted my iPad Pro, and
I signed out of the iTunes Store and signed back in
again. I tried to restore my iPad Pro, but, because
theres a problem with the latest iOS update far
this device, I wasnt able to do that.
I called AppleCare. My call took an hour; 17
minutes waiting to talk to someone, punctuated by
some very bad sounding hold music, then a first
technician who offered some possible solutions.
(Reset all settings; that didnt do anything).
I got transferred to a senior advisor, who said
this was the first time he had heard about this issue.
We tried a couple of things, he then suggested
I sign out of iCloud, and then sign back in. This
unblocked the problem. My iPad Pro now shows
my iCloud Music Library.

Interview: Ken Segall

Former Apple ad man on Steve Jobs, simplicity, and why an
Apple car wouldnt be so crazy. Caitlin McGarry reports

s creative director of advertising agency

TWBA/Chiat/Day, Ken Segall crafted ads
for NeXT Computer and then Apple. He
helped create the iconic Think Different campaign
upon Steve Jobss return to Apple and gave
the iMac its name when Jobs preferred a pretty
terrible alternative. Segall spent 12 years working
alongside Jobs, in the process picking up enough
tips on running a successful business that he
wrote two books behind Apples guiding principle:
simplicity above all else.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 63

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 63

20/06/2016 11:49

Segalls first book, Insanely Simple, was about

how Jobs simplified Apple across the board, from
products to operations, and turned his floundering
computer business from a sinking ship into
the most profitable company in the world. The
second, Think Simple, hits shelves on Tuesday
and picks up where Insanely Simple left off. Segall
found business leaders, including Ben & Jerrys
co-founder Jerry Greenfield and Whole Foods
co-CEO Walter Robb, who are simplifying their
operations and products to become the Apple of
their respective industries.
Segall made headlines earlier this month with
a piece in The Guardian about whether Apple is
abandoning simplicity and losing its way in the
Tim Cook era (spoiler alert: no). He chatted with
Macworld before the release of Think Simple
about the book, that Guardian piece, Apples latest
products (both real and rumoured), and the time
Jobs raked him over the coals.
Macworld: Your book is all about taking Apples
principles of simplicity and applying them to
other companies. But people have criticized
Apple for growing too complex in recent years.
Is that the case?
Segall: Its more complex, but part of that is by
necessity. The company has grown so much bigger
and its audience has matured, and they need to
keep up with that. The bigger iPhone is a perfect
example of that. Apple resisted making that extra
iPhone for way too long, actually, and a lot of
customers were going to other phone makers as a
64 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 64

20/06/2016 11:49

result. You dont want to lose customers because

youre trying to stay so simple. Although some
people complain that the product line is getting too
complex, its far from complicated when you look at
the big picture. Apple still makes so few products
compared to other companies.
Macworld: Which Apple product could use
some simplification?
Segall: The big one is Apple Music, which has been
widely attacked for its needless complexity. Im a
relatively smart person and I like this stuff, and I
was a bit perplexed by Apple Music as well.
Theres some of that stuff going on in product
naming as well. If you look at the three iPhones,
the 6s, 6s Plus, and SE, that right there is more
complicated than it needs to be. I think they need
a bit of quality control when it comes to naming
schemes or whatever might impact their customers
perception of simplicity.

ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 65

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 65

20/06/2016 11:49

Macworld: Speaking of product names, what was

your role in naming the iMac?
Segall: I think Steve always wanted every little
detail to be absolutely perfect, especially when
theyre brand new revolutionary products. That very
first product, the iMac, was obviously important to
Steve because it was the first product he would
launch after his return to the company.
It was unlike all the other beige and boring
computers at the time. It had that interesting shape,
it had translucent blue around it so you could see
the innards of the computer.
He said he had a great name that he was ready
to go with, but he wanted to see if we could beat it.
The name he had fallen in love with was MacMan.
When he told that to us at the agency, we were a
bit taken aback. It was up to us to come up with
something better, but he didnt like any of them.
We showed him some new names, including iMac,
and he didnt like those either. He didnt hate it,
but he didnt like it. He gave us two days to come
up with something better. During those two days,
he decided to put the name iMac on a model and
show it around Apple. There was no moment of
glory or anything, but it was suddenly the iMac.
We saved the world from MacMan.
Macworld: Is the little i era for Apple product
names over?
Segall: The i is on its way out. Its a sad moment,
isnt it? The little i has served us so well. Its
become too legally challenging because the i
66 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 66

20/06/2016 11:49

became such a big thing inside and outside of

Apple, its basically impossible to come up with
any i name that wont get them in hot water.
The i is a middle man if you think about it. It
doesnt directly brand Apple products other than
the fact that Apple has used it so long. It actually
makes more sense just to use the brand name. Its
simpler, more directly ties to Apple, and eliminates
the issue of legal problems with new names. Im in
support of it.
In 2006, at the opening of the Apple Store on
Fifth Avenue [in Manhattan], I was there before the
opening to the public and Steve was there, too. We
were standing next to the iBooks on display and
he said then that the i had run its course. It was a
given that theyd be going away from that one day.
The problem at the time, and continues to be, that
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 67
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 67

20/06/2016 11:49

he didnt know what to do with iMac. You couldnt

change iMac to Mac because every computer
Apple makes is a Mac. Its 10 years later and still
there, but clearly on its way out.
Macworld: In the book, you talk about how Steve
Jobs would never dilute Apples premium brand
with low-priced products. How do the iPhone 5c
and now the iPhone SE jibe with that philosophy?
Segall: When the 5c came out, there was all
this expectation that Apple would create this
cheap iPhone. At the time, I said it might be
more affordable but it will never be cheap. They
presented that model in the most positive way
they could it was a very different kind of plastic,

68 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 68

20/06/2016 11:49

high quality, great design, and so on. It was

consistent with the Apple brand.
What they did this time around is what they
shouldve done the first time. The SE is the same
exact quality as a real iPhone the heft, the quality.
It really feels and works like a real iPhone, it just
happens to be smaller and cheaper. Its not a cheap
iPhone, its a more affordable iPhone. It gives
people a cheaper way to get into it. I dont think
Apple will ever make the $100 iPhone for parts of
the world where theyre buying phones for that
price now. Theyll never compete on that level.
Macworld: The book details a time when Steve
Jobs interviewed Stephen Sonnenfeld, who was
then overseeing advertising for JPMorgan Chase,
for an internal marketing VP position. The story
made me cringe.
Jobs inquired about Sonnenfelds current job,
running the JPMorgan Chase advertising account
for a hot upstart agency. Sonnenfeld was proud of
the work, but Jobs made it clear that he didnt hold
banks, as institutions, in very high regard. When
Sonnenfeld explained how the bank was helping
communities, Jobs said, Anyone can throw money
at things. What are they doing thats really good
for the world? That opening volley put Sonnenfeld
in defence mode. Then, as he recalls, Jobs zeroed
in on the 10 years hed spent working the IBM
and Intel accounts. For Steve, seeing those
experiences on my rsum was like a shark circling
his bloody prey. He said, You havent really been
associated with any great work during your career.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 69
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 69

20/06/2016 11:49

Macworld: Sonnenfeld told you he learned from

the experience. Did you ever experience a similar
situation working with Jobs?
Segall: The thing with Steve is he loved to have
passionate debate about most anything. He
respected people who had an opinion and were
passionate about defending it, but in the midst of
that debate, he could make you feel like a fool.
There were two times in my entire relationship
with Steve over 12 years that I got raked over the
coals. I remember both of them distinctly.
One was the introduction of the first iMac.
Back in those days, the internet wasnt quite as
widespread, so we did spreads in newsweeklies
and magazines. We had a 16-page spread that was
going to be in Time and Newsweek. We were ready
to print and I sent Steve the pre-version of it. There
was this blue colour on the iMac, it was on the
computer and the keyboard. He thought the blue
on the keyboard in this one shot was inaccurate,
that it wasnt the right colour blue. When I got the
two photos together, no one on earth would have
ever seen the difference. We were using the photo
provided to us by Apple, but Steve thought we
were ruining the launch of the computer because
one photo on one page had a slightly wrong blue.
He was crazy over it. He was red-faced angry. Its a
perfect example of him becoming angry due to his
passion for perfection.
The funny ending. Once we got over that, we
changed the photo, and a couple weeks later I got
a phone call from him, a very quiet version of Steve
complimenting me and the agency because he had
70 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 70

20/06/2016 11:49

seen the insert that was in the magazine, and he

saw the billboards, and he saw the TV commercial,
and it was all so beautiful he thought it was the best
launch in the history of Apple and the history of
computers. In the back of my head I could hear him
screaming at me because we had ruined the launch
of the computer.
He was a passionate man, and these stories
out of context make him seem crazy, but it was
very exciting. These things were the seeds of the
modern Apple, and just to be part of that was a
remarkable experience and certainly the greatest
experience of my marketing career.
Macworld: When you hear rumours about products
like an Apple Car, does that seem out of character
for the company? Would a car be an example of
Apple losing its way?
Segall: I have to confess that when I first heard the
rumour, I had a similar reaction. But its very much
like Apple going into the phone category or the
music player category.
Cars are very much like phones. Other than
Tesla, no one is really blowing people away in
terms of design and usability. The concern I have
is the timing of it. If its not going to happen for
four more years, Tesla will have that much time
to get better. The competition in the category will
be stiffer than it was when Apple entered music
players or phones. But I do think its a cool idea
and I would be very eager to see what kind of car
Apple would build using the philosophy thats been
at the core of every product theyve made.

How To: Sign into a

different Apple ID on iPad
Got several Apple IDs and want to change your default
account on an iPad? Christopher Minasians shows how

our Apple ID is used for multiple different

purposes, from accessing the App Store to
download your favourite apps to connecting
with your contacts through iMessage. No matter
what you use your Apple ID for, you might have
two separate accounts which you use for different
purposes. In this guide we go over how to sign into
a different Apple ID on iPad.

Grab your account details

Before signing out of your current account, you
should make sure that youve got the right account
details for your other Apple ID account.

How To: Save and restore

iOS game progress data
Craig Grannell reveals how to restore your
iOS game save data using iCloud

ames for your iPhone and iPad can be

pretty hefty. By the time a media-rich titles
done expanding after download, it can
easily munch 1GB or more of your storage space.
Buy enough games and sooner or later your iOS
device will be full and because you cant expand
its storage, youll have to delete something to add
anything new.
An added complication on iOS comes from the
system deleting an apps settings and data when
the app itself is removed. This means if youve

74 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 74

20/06/2016 11:49

spent many months working your way through a

game and you delete it, your progress will vanish
in an instant. This tutorial provides methods for
stopping that happening in the majority of cases.

Check your storage

Make sure you really need to delete a game
anyway. Some titles take up piffling amounts of
space little different from a few music tracks. What
you want to find is the really weighty games that
you no longer play. So open Settings, go to General
and tap Usage. You may have to wait a few minutes
for the app list to display, depending on what you
have installed; once it does, tap Show all Apps
to expand it. The apps will be listed in terms of
storage demands, with the biggest at the top. Note
down those you no longer want installed, starting
from the top of the list.

iCloud
If a game enables you to save progress to iCloud,
take advantage. That makes saving and restoring a

ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 75

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 75

20/06/2016 11:49

cinch. Some games will provide the option to do so

manually, such as Batman Arkham City Lockdown.
A few will entirely automatically save your progress
to iCloud; Food Run rather sweetly does this,
meaning all you need to do to get your progress
back is reinstall and launch the game.

iExplorer
For most games, though, iCloud isnt an option, and
youll need to use iExplorer. Install iExplorer and
plug your device into your Mac via its USB cable.
The device will load into iExplorer, and youll see it
appear in the sidebar. Select the device and open
the Apps list. Select the app youd like to back-up
data from. Youll see a bunch of folders, including
Documents and Library.
Somewhere within Documents and Library
will be the high score data, and the location and
filename varies by game. To be on the safe side,
we recommend saving both folders for every
game where you want to back-up the data. Create
a folder in Finder with the name of the game, the
device it was taken from, and the date (such as Bit
Pilot iPhone - 20160610). In iExplorer, select the
Documents and Library folders (Command-click
each in turn), Control-click the selection and select
Export to Folder. Choose your previously created
folder as the save location for this data.
To later restore your data, install a fresh copy
of the app on your device, and then connect the
device to iExplorer. In your Finder data backup, locate the save file, and then drag it to the
equivalent location in iExplorer, replacing any
existing file if you need to. If the app on your device
76 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 76

20/06/2016 11:49

had previously been launched, you may need to

force-quit it in order for the new save data to be
loaded. Double-click your Home button, locate the
app, and swipe it upwards. Then relaunch.
If you cant easily locate the game save, you can
try copying across the entirety of the Documents
and Library folders. In rare cases, this might cause
problems with the app (such as if youre restoring
very old data to an app thats been updated several
times since), but this is very rare; and even if
problems do occur, you can always reinstall the app
and try copying across fewer files at a time.
Note that the method outlined in this tutorial
isnt quite foolproof its not totally guaranteed to
work with every single iOS title. However, weve
successfully used it hundreds of times to save and
restore game progress data, and also to move said
progress between devices, such as from an iPhone
to an iPad, in order to continue with a game that
lacks cloud-based saves. If feeling a bit paranoid
about a particular game, you can always try a fresh
install to any second device you own and then
move the data across, to see if it works.

How To: Send large

files on an iOS device
David Price explains how to transfer giant documents

Pads, contrary to some early comments, are great

devices for creating media, but the devices lack
of non-proprietary ports and cables can make it
a pain for writers, designers, artists and musicians
to get their (potentially gigantic) creations off the
tablet and over to collaborators and fans. The
obvious method is email, but a large document is
liable to overload the recipients inbox.
In this article well look at one method that allows
you to easily send a very large document from an
iPad over email, but without actually including the
document itself in the email.

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 78

20/06/2016 11:49

Mail Drop
In iOS 9, Apple added a new feature thats exactly
what were looking for. Its called Mail Drop.
Open the Mail app on your iPad and start
composing a new email. After filling in the To
and Subject fields, tap anywhere in the body of
the email and five icons will appear above the
keyboard on the righthand side: the first three
are for formatting text as either bold, italicised or
underlined, but the others are for attaching videos
and photos (the camera icon) and for attaching
other documents (the paperclip icon).
If you tap the paperclip, youll be given the
option of several folders of documents you
can attach to the email. In our example, we can
choose from Pages or TextEdit files that are
stored in iCloud Drive.
Tap the appropriate folder, then tap your chosen
document. If its a large document, then at this point
there will be a brief delay while Mail prepares the
file for sending; Mail will be frozen and youll just

ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 79

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 79

20/06/2016 11:49

have to wait. When its finished processing the file,

an icon will appear in the body of the email, and
youll be able to hit Send.
Its at this point again, assuming its a big
attachment that Mail will give you the option of
using MailDrop. It isnt compulsory: you can select
Try Sending Attachment and Mail will do its best
to shove the document into your recipients inbox.
But the fact that this dialog box has appeared is a
pretty fair warning that Mail Drop is a better option.
So well Tap Use Mail Drop instead. This sends the
email you dont need to confirm the decision.
Mail Drop is a better option because it doesnt
send the document itself across email; it uploads
the document (temporarily) to iCloud, then sends
the recipient a link that will allow them to download
it from iCloud at their end. The end result is the
same, but it avoids having a large file taking up
space in their email inbox.
Heres what it looks like to receive a Mail Drop
email. Youll see that theres a deadline in there: the
file will be deleted from iCloud after 30 days.

How To: Set up Parental

Controls on an iOS device
Ashleigh Allsopp shows how to make an iPad child-friendly

ids love iPads and iPhones. Theyre a great

way to keep children entertained during the
summer holidays, with thousands of apps
available for them to enjoy, including games, books
and educational apps. (For more on that, see our
roundup of the Best iOS apps for kids.) However,
you need to make sure that any device you hand
over to your kids is child-friendly, with parental
controls in place to prevent them accessing
inappropriate content.
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 81

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 81

20/06/2016 11:49

And dont forget the potential financial pitfalls.

There have been a few high-profile incidents
where parents were faced with huge App Store
bills after their kids unwittingly downloaded
apps and in-app purchases, so its worth taking
precautions to ensure that your children arent
able to do the same.
Here we walk you through all the precautions
you should take before handing over an iPhone,
iPad or iPod touch to a child. We cover both
semi-permanent changes, for cases where youre
handing down an old Apple device to a child to use
in perpetuity, and temporary measures to set up
when a youngster is merely borrowing the device.

Set up an old iPad or iPhone

before passing it on to a child
With seven generations of iPads now available, its
becoming increasingly common to find multiple
iPads in a home, and some of them are being
passed on to children. So what can you do to make
such an iPad (or an iPhone, for that matter) useful
and safe for your child? These steps are a good
place to start.
Step 1: Wipe the device
When giving an iPad or iPhone to another person,
its imperative for general security reasons as
well as ones specific to younger users that you
remove all your data from it.
Back up the device first (because you may want
to restore that data to a new tablet), then open
the Settings app. Select General, then scroll down
and select Reset, and then Erase All Contents
82 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 82

20/06/2016 11:49

and Settings. Enter your passcode. Youll get one

last warning: confirm you decision by tapping
Erase one last time.
Step 2: Decide if youre going to download
appsyourself, or create an Apple ID for your child
If youve got a young child, you should take
responsibility for selecting apps on their behalf
and purchasing and downloading the apps through
your own App Store account. That way you know
exactly whats on their iPad, plus you can also deal
with organising and configuring the apps yourself.
Older children will want an Apple ID of their own.
If you let them set one up, theyll appreciate having
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 83
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 83

20/06/2016 11:49

the independence to download the apps and media

they want, rather than simply the ones youve
decided are appropriate. But there are some other
benefits too: their apps are tied to their account
and they wont have access to yours, some of
which may be inappropriate for children. (If you go
down this route, you may want to create a separate
account for them on your Mac or PC, too.)
Step 3: Enable Restrictions
iOS offers broad options to switch off Safari,
YouTube, iTunes and Ping, and to disable the ability
to install and delete apps. Additionally, you can
allow app and media downloads based on their
rating restricting movies to U and PG ratings,
and apps to ages 12 and over, for instance and
prevent your child from making in-app purchases,
playing multiplayer games, and adding friends
within Game Center.
To set up restrictions, launch Settings on the
iPad, tap General, and then tap Restrictions.
Everything will be greyed out until you tap Enable
Restrictions at the top of the screen, whereupon
youll be prompted to enter and confirm a four-digit
passcode. (This doesnt need to correspond to your
usual passcode, if you use one, although it may be
easier to remember if it does. Just make sure your
child doesnt already know that one!) If anyone tries
to change your settings, theyll first need to enter
the code you selected at this point.
Now that Restrictions are enabled, you can
toggle specific apps and functions on an off if the
slider next to an item is green, the child can access
it; if its white, a passcode will need to be entered in
84 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 84

20/06/2016 11:49

order to either access the function or to disable the

restriction entirely.
Step 4: Configure email
If your child hasnt got an email address, you can
obtain a free one from a source such as Gmail or
Yahoo. Both services ask that the owner of the
email address be at least 13 years old, although
they have no way of confirming the owners age.
Unwanted email can be a problem with iOS
devices because, unlike with OS Xs parental
controls, you have no way of limiting the addresses
your child can receive email from or send email to
on the device. Gmail and Yahoo allow you to create
limited whitelists of senders the recipient should
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 85
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 85

20/06/2016 11:49

always receive messages from, but offers no way

to block senders who arent on the list. The same
applies to iCloud email accounts. You can set up
basic filters on the iCloud website, but they cant
prevent the sending of mail to your childs iCloud
email account.
For this reason, you should be completely sure
that your child can handle the responsibility that
comes with an email account (and is willing to tell
you if they are receiving inappropriate messages).
Step 5: Choose apps for the iPad
If you want complete control over the apps that
your child can install on the iPad, switch off
restrictions if theyre enabled, sit down with them,
and choose some appropriate apps. When youve
finished, switch restrictions On and toggle the
Installing Apps option from green to white. This
prevents your child from installing apps.
Step 6: The talk
Heres a general piece of advice: whenever
you give - or rather, consider giving - your child
access to a piece of technology, you should first
sit down and chat to them about its benefits and
dangers. In this case, the talk should address the
importance of setting limits on iPad use, asserting
your right as a parent to check up on your child
and warning of the dangers of giving out personal
details on the internet.
Bear in mind that, in order to be effective, the
approach should be age-appropriate. You dont
want to terrify younger children with visions of
internet bogeymen, nor should you overprotect a

teenager. Your advice should be similar to that for a

traveller in a new city: get the lay of the land, learn
about the dangers and opportunities and have a
good time.

Complaints and rules related

to kids app and in-app purchases
Back in 2014, Apple agreed to refund at least
$32.5m (about 20m) to parents whose kids racked
up huge bills through in-app purchases in the US.
The agreement was made to settle a Federal Trade
Commission complaint. As part of the settlement,
Apple was also required to change its billing
practices by 31 March 2014 to help prevent these
occurrences from happening in the future.
According to the FTC, Apple received tens of
thousands of complaints about unauthorised in-app
purchases downloaded by kids.
On 30 January of that year, the UKs Office of
Fair Trading (OFT) announced the introduction of
new in-app purchase standards that were decided
following a year-long investigation, and gave
developers two months to update their apps to
comply with the new guidelines.
From 1 April 2014, all apps were instructed
to clearly disclose information about the costs
associated with a game before it is downloaded,
ensure that users are not led to believe they are
required to pay in order to proceed if payment
is not necessary, provide information about the
app developer to enable the consumer to get in
touch to make a complaint, and insist on informed
consent. Additionally, the new principles also mean
developers are no longer able to use language that
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 87
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 87

20/06/2016 11:49

disguises the commercial intent of any in-game

promotion or paid-for content. For example, if an
app uses similar language to encourage the player
to buy one thing with in-game currency and the
other with real money, its unlikely to comply with
the OFT standards as its difficult to distinguish
when real money is required. Another example is if
a game encourages the player to play an aspect of
the game that cannot be completed without making
a payment.
These new guidelines should help prevent
children from unintentionally spending real money
within apps, but the easiest way to make sure that
your kids dont end up downloading any apps or inapp purchases on your iOS device is to ensure that
they never get hold of your password.
Each time they want to download or purchase
something, it will ask for your Apple ID password.
Enter your password yourself every time.

Turn on restrictions
You should be aware that, when you enter your
password, the default is that it will not need to be
entered again for 15 minutes. Within that time, your
children could accidentally download hundreds of
pounds worth of in-app purchases.
For example, in 2013, five-year-old Danny
Kitchen was playing Zombies vs Ninja when he
asked his dad for the password to the family iTunes
account so that he could download the free-to-play
app. However, Danny then went on to download
a 69.99 in-app purchase 19 times within the next
ten minutes as the password did not need to be
entered again.

To change this setting

and prevent this from
happening, go to Settings >
General > Restrictions, and
then change the Require
Password setting to
Immediately. Now, every
time your child goes to buy
something, whether it is
an app or in-app purchase,
theyll be asked to type in
the password before they
can progress further.
To stop your children
from having access to the
Restrictions menu and
changing the settings back
(if your kids are a little older
and more tech-savvy), youll be asked to set up a
PIN code.

Restrict access to apps

You can ensure that your child doesnt download
any apps at all by going to the Restrictions menu
and changing the Installing Apps slider to off (from
green to white). Within this menu, you can also turn
off Safari, Camera, FaceTime, iTunes, iBookstore,
Deleting Apps, Siri and Explicit Language for further
control over your childs access to your iPad or
iPhones features.

Turn off in-app purchases

You can also turn in-app purchases off completely
from this menu if you want to. Youll find the on/off
ISSUE 109 iPAD & iPHONE USER 89

slider towards the bottom

of the restriction options.
Within the Restrictions
menu, you can also prevent
kids from downloading
content from the iTunes
Store that may be
inappropriate, by tapping
each different type of
content and choosing your
preferred age rating.

Turn on device
passcodes
Its not just within apps or
on the iTunes App Store
that kids can end up
spending their parents
money without realising. In July 2013, a 14-monthold girl accidentally purchased a car using the eBay
app when she was playing with her dads iPhone.
In this case, to prevent a child from being able to
access your iPhone or iPad at all, youll want to set
up a device passcode. To set up a passcode, go to
Settings > General > Passcode Lock and tap Turn
Passcode On. You can then choose your passcode.
If you slide the Simple Passcode slider to off, youll
be able to type a word rather than the default fourdigit number to use as your passcode.

Give kids iTunes Gift Cards

or iTunes Monthly Gift allowances
If you want to give your child a limited amount of
money to spend on their own Apple ID, you can buy
90 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 90

20/06/2016 11:49

an iTunes Gift Card or Certificate from the iTunes

Store for them to use.
Further still, you can set up an iTunes Monthly
Gift to give your child a set amount of money to
spend in the iTunes Store each month. The iTunes
Monthly Gift can range from 5 to 30 in value, and
can be cancelled at any time.
Of course, the other option is to keep your iPad
or iPhone out of their reach completely.
There have been some extreme cases in the UK
that saw parents refunded by Apple after their kids
downloaded expensive apps and in-app purchases,
too. Last year, a parent was refunded 4,000
after his eight-year-old daughter spent the money
playing Campus Life, My Horse, Hay Day and
Smurfs Village on an iPad.
Theres no guarantee that youll be so lucky,
though, so the best bet is to try and prevent it
from happening in the first place, by following
this advice.

Opinion: Apple is finally

embracing not Apple
Jason Snell looks at Apples new developer-friendly features

Pads, contrary to some early comments, are great

devices for creating media, but the devices lack
of non-proprietary ports and cables can make it
a pain for writers, designers, artists and musicians
to get their (potentially gigantic) creations off the
tablet and over to collaborators and fans. The
obvious method is email, but a large document is
liable to overload the recipients inbox.
Apples relationship with Not Apple has
always been a little bit tricky. In the darker days,
the company needed the support of outside
developers in order to keep the lights on and build
the popularity of its products and platforms. In

92 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109

iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 92

20/06/2016 11:49

the sunnier days after Steve Jobss return, Apple

flexed its muscles more, and looked upon outside
companies a little less favourably.
I always got the sense that many people inside
Apple during that era, including Jobs himself, saw
third-party software and hardware developers as
followers riding in Apples wake and making money
off of its greatness. But the announcements made
at Apples annual Worldwide Developer Conference
continue a trend: Apple is embracing Not Apple
more than it has in years.

Bridging the walled garden

While Apple opened a door for software developers
with the App Store, for much of iOSs history most
of the system has been off limits. Initially, apps
were islands unto themselves, with little to no way
to communicate with one another or integrate with
fundamental features of iOS.
Things are changing. In recent years Apple
added photo and sharing extensions to the mix,
and the ability to read files from a common location.
iOS 10 will break down even more barriers that
once stood in the way of third-party apps.
Siri, one of Apples key strategic features, has
been opened to third-party apps for the first time.
Apples starting slow with this one, as it did with
background tasks, push notifications, and other
new iOS features when they were first introduced
only a few types of iOS apps will have access
to Siri out of the gate. But its clearly the start of
something much bigger, and its a decision that
will make Siri better while it also makes apps
much more powerful.

If youre travelling, a mapping app (whether its

Apple Maps or Google Maps or Waze) is more than
just a tool to get you from one location to another:
Its also an encyclopedia of information about the
world around you, at least ideally. In iOS 10, Maps
will be open to extensions from other apps. I can
imagine directories of services being able to add
their data to your maps, for example.
Then theres Messages, one of the key updates
of iOS 10, which offers the ability for third-party
apps to insert all sorts of information, from stickers
to scheduling to money transfers. Theres only
so much stuff Apple is ever going to be able to
build itself, that third-party app developers will be
more than happy to build and insert in an app like
Messages. And this is the beauty of Apple opening
itself up like this: Apples own apps get better
while developers get access to some of the most
important apps and experiences on the platform.
Developers also now have access to the lock
screen and notification center, with displays of
video, animation, and other app data that bring the
richness of their apps into hallowed places where
previously only Apple itself could tread.

More open, more developer friendly

There are other areas where Apple seems to
becoming more welcoming. Originally, it walled off
access to iCloud on the Mac, limiting it only to apps
that appeared in the Mac App Store. The idea was
to use iCloud as a carrot to convince developers
to put their apps in the Store. Now the company
has changed its approach, and any registered Mac
developer can gain access to iCloud.
94 iPAD & iPHONE USER ISSUE 109
iPAD & iPHONE USER 109.indd 94

20/06/2016 11:49

Once again, thats good for users, developers,

and ultimately Apple. It might be bad for the Mac
App Store, but lets be realistic iCloud is a more
important strategic direction for Apple than the Mac
App Store is, and forcing developers into the Mac
App Store just so they can get access to iCloud was
not a move that resulted in happy developers.
Then theres the happy news for makers of audio
and video communication apps such as Skype: At
long last, theyre essentially peers of Apples own
Phone and FaceTime features. A Skype call can
ring your phone with the same interrupt-driven
interface as if you got a phone call or a FaceTime
invitation. There was a time when allowing thirdparty telephony services favoured access to the
iPhone wouldve seemed like something that would
never happen, but with iOS 10 it will be a reality.
Finally, though no one mentioned it at the
keynote, developers at WWDC are well aware that
Apple has altered the deal on the 30 percent cut
it takes from App Store transactions, offering a
reduced 15 percent rate beginning in the second
year of any subscription relationship on the store.
Extended subscription relationships between users
and app developers are good for the developers
and, yet again, good for Apple.
Those were the old days, when Apple was
focused more on itself than the rest of the world.
Whether its because of competition, financial
headwinds, or just the maturation of its biggest
platform, todays Apple has thrown many of its
doors open and is welcoming in the outside world.
In the long run, its going to be good for users,
developers, and Apple alike.
