Lampstand of Mercy: Pope Francis on the Family as the Joy of Love

Lolita T. Bacarrisas

A symposium was held

last August 2, 2016 at the
Little Theatre of Xavier
University; Cagayan de Oro
City on the talk of Rev. Father
Michael Kirwan, SJ entitled A
Lampstand of Mercy: Pope
Francis on the Family as the
Joy of Love.
The presentation of Fr.
Michael Kirwan, covers three
themes: Time is greater
than space; Seeds of the
Word and Gradualness in
Pastoral Care. The topics
presented
widened the
perspective of the listeners
on the actual condition of
marriage and family and its
present challenges. The talk
provided them a paradigm
shift towards appreciation
of the beauty and power of
marriage as a vocation; as a
sacrament and as a gift from
God. It was an affirmation of
the beautiful thoughts of Pope
Francis about the joy of love in
the families.
Ms. Lolita T. Bacarrisas,

one of the reactors, and a

staff of Christian Family and
Life Apostolate, shared about
her thoughts of the realities
of married life. The other
reactor, Mr. Adlai Valledor,
a faculty member of the
Religious Studies Department
of Xavier University, shared
his thoughts on the document
presented.
The said convergence,
talked about the framework of
the reflection of Pope Francis
about his positive vision for
marriage and family and life
and the various challenges to
the Christian ideal of marriage
as embodied on his postsynodal exhortation, Amoris
Laetitia, the Joy of Love.
The
exhortation
of
Pope Francis in Amoris
Laetitia is a very enriching
pastoral imperative as the
Pope is invoking MERCYas
his framework for the new
evangelization of the Church.
As mercy gives justice, it
will bring the Church closer
to those who are living in

Of Drugs and Fullness of Life

I have come that you may have life and have life to the full. (John 10:10)
The current problem
concerning
drugs
cannot
escape
anyones
attention.
The problem with drugs has
reached the level of a calamity
and an emergency situation. It
is systemic, having its roots in
poverty, woundedness, greed
and abuse of power. It has
become a plague afflicting the
whole society. The drugs issue
is not only about individual
users and pushers but also
about families and communities
Abp. Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ,D.D.
affected by this pervasive
problem. It cuts across all strata of society from the poorest to
the wealthiest and most powerful.

If there is a positive side to the current war on drugs, it is

the fact that thousands have surrendered and hundreds more
arrested and put to jail. The problem with the latter is that our
jails have become extremely congested since they were built for
a limited number of detainees only; but now the number has
been multiplied many times over. This poses a lot of risks and
dangers.

In Cagayan de Oro alone there are already at least 4,000

responders who, after presenting themselves to the police
station, return to their homes with the promise not to engage
in drug use or drug-dealing again. They have yet to be classified
according to the extent of their addiction i.e., those who need
residential rehabilitation or community-based intervention.
Many of these responders are baptized Catholics and people
from other faiths and religious denominations who may be
suffering from all sorts of psychological, moral, spiritual and
financial difficulties.
As a Church we cannot remain indifferent to this reality.
Pastoral charity urges us to concretize the challenge of this
Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Communities of faith are called
to become islands of mercy and field hospitals, in the words
of Pope Francis. Thus, we have initiated the coming together of
various stakeholders to assess the current situation and look
into possible responses to the drugs crisis. In as much as the
problem is systemic, we want to address it communally and
systematically.

On the part of the Archdiocese, we have declared a Jubilee

of Mercy for drug responders and collaborators. Availing of the
Season of Grace we also take this opportunity to launch our
program involving activities towards immediate and long-term
rehabilitation and intervention. This will take place on August
22 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Carmen, Cagayan de
Oro City. The activities include: Recollection (9 am 12 nn),
Penitential Service and Confessions (1 4 pm), Procession
to San Agustin Cathedral entering through the Door of Mercy
(4:30), and Eucharistic Celebration (5:30 pm).

I am asking all pastors in the Archdiocese to open available
facilities such as churches and parish halls for communitybased recovery programs. I also enjoin all ministries, religious
organizations and lay ecclesial movements to be actively
involved in these collaborative efforts to accompany responders/
recoverers, together with government agencies, NGOs and
private institutions.
The church with her charism in moral and spiritual matters
can be a safe oasis for silence, prayer, reflection and sharing
through retreats and recollections. For the Catholic responders,
the church possesses the great treasure in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation which they can avail of. We are deeply aware that
behind the problem of drugs is the inner longing for authentic
tranquility which according to St. Augustine can only be found
in God: You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is
restless until it rests in Thee.

We want to be proclaimers of the gospel of Jesus who said,

I have come that you may have life and have life to the full.
Thus, while we commit ourselves positively to these tasks, we
uncompromisingly uphold the sanctity and dignity of human
life. We are opposed to any form of extrajudicial killings as a
means of addressing the issue of drug use. We cannot solve a
crime by committing another crime.

As St. Paul says, we conquer evil by doing good. This was the
path chosen by St. Monica in accompanying her wayward son,
Augustine. If not for her relentless faith and compassion, we
would not have a St. Augustine today. Our steadfast journeying
with and care for the wayward on the road to recovery is the
same path that leads all of us to holiness and fullness of life.

Feast of our Lady of Mt. Carmel Daughters of Mary Immaculate

Visit the Sick

Carmel

Rudger Graceel G. Cahulogan

On July 16, 2016, the feast of our Lady

of Mt. Carmel, Carmen was celebrated
during the Eucharistic celebration
presided by Msgr. Eutiquiano Legitimas
with the concelebrating priests in the
archdiocese.
In his homily, Msgr. Legitimas
pointed out that nowadays only a few
people are named after the Blessed
Virgin Mary or other names related to
her apparitions like Lourdes, Asuncion,
Carmen, and Guadalupe.
Carmen),
nga magpabilin gayud. This is to let
the people become aware of the names
history and be more devoted in their

Christian life, he said.

Magpasalamat kita kay nakabaton
kita ug patron nga dili alang-alang, si
Mama Mary nga maoy Rayna sa mga
Santos, mao nga dili basta-basta. Then
he added a brief history about our Lady
and the Brown Scapular to remind the
people again what the fiesta is all about.
Its not only about wearing something
(like the medallon or any religious item)
but most of all about remembering the
meaning of what one wears or the
devotion one has to live, so that ones
spiritual life will be strengthened.
After the mass Rev. Fr. Bernard Elvin
Q. Simene, the parish priest, thanked all
who worked behind the scenes for the
success of the fiesta activities.

Catholic Faith Defender Conducts

BEC Sessions

Participants of BEC sessions

Cleb Calimutan

The parishioners of Nuestra

Seora Virgin del Rosario Parish of
Consolacion, Cagayan de Oro are
actively attending and participating
the basic ecclesial community sessions.
Different seldas are scheduled to
meet once a week to meditate the
Gospel and share on what touches
their innermost feelings. Then, they
pray for one another through random
intercessions and offering back to God
all their experiences in life.
To prepare the group for
the incoming Sunday,
Bro. Cleb
Calimutan, a Catholic Lay Evangelizer

(Confraternity
of
Catholic
Lay
theologians and Defenders of Faith),
is giving them some backgrounds of
the Gospel bringing them back to
the very moment of the life of Jesus.
The attendees are so excited to know
the life style of the Jews and the early
Christians in the first century: how
they think, live and pray are essential
for them to feel and reflect the Gospel.
The BEC seldas are more eager to
listen the Sunday homily of the priest
and actively participate in the Sunday
Mass, knowing that they already
learned something and meditated the
Gospel in advance.

One of the reach-out activities

of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate
International (DMII) in the Jubilee Year
of Mercy is to the infirm and physically
challenged. On April 17, 2016, they
visited the sick and conducted a healing
session. Part of the activity was praying
the rosary, reflecting and sharing on
the Gospel, and enthroning the Bible.
The DMII also gave them some financial
assistance.
At the culmination of Flores de
Mayo on May 29, 2016, the group
distributed 87 packs of school supplies
to the children who participated in this
daily homage to Our Lady. Seven chapels
of San Nicholas de Tolentino chaplaincy
joined the Flores de Mayo culmination.
They are thankful for the support and

ACDO Joins Search for Outstanding Families

Lolita T. Bacarrisas

In view of the CBCPs nine

year spiritual journey that will
culminate with the great Jubilee
in 2021 and in line with the
celebration of the Holy Eucharist
and Family this year, the National
Search for Outstanding Families
2016 had been launched. The
search is open to all families
particularly the poor in the
parishes. The family refers to
the nuclear family with father,
mother and children. The family
must have many children and the
whole family must be involved in
the evangelization and missionary
programs of the parish or in the
vicariate or at the archdiocesan
level. The family must be in good
moral standing in the society
and that they must be living a
real sacramental life. The award
recognizes families who are
responsive to the Gospel values.
Distinctive of the award is its
recognition to materially poor,
who are at our midst and have the
God-given power to tell the story
of the poor Christ who by His
poverty liberates and enriches us.
The
National
Selection
Committee has been organized
and it is being chaired by the
President Couple of the Marriage
Encounter Foundation of the
Philippines Incorporated (MEFP).
There will be twenty five official
candidates that shall be chosen
in the entire country based on
the criteria set for judging. Out
of the twenty five chosen official
candidates, there will be ten
(10) Outstanding Families to be
awarded by the National Board
of Judges which is chaired by the
Chairman of the CBCP Episcopal
Commission on Family and Life.
On the part of the Archdiocese
of Cagayan de Oro, The Christian

Family and Life Apostolate (CFLA)

initiated the archdiocesan search
started last April 2016. A Special
Committee was organized to
ensure the smooth conduct of the
search. Respectively, the parish
and vicariate levels had organized
their Selection & Validating Teams
to implement the search based on
the given criteria by the National
Organizing Committee. Likewise,
the Archdiocesan Team had issued
Supplemental Guidelines to suit
the needs at our level and timelines
were observed for the submission
of Final Nominees at the parish
and vicariate levels. Each vicariate
should select one (1) Official
Nominee chosen from among
the nominees of the respective
parishes of each vicariate. The
deadline for submission of the
Vicariate Official Nominee was last
May 20, 2016 to the archdiocesan
level.

The ten (10) Final Nominees

from the vicariates were presented
during the Joint Celebration of

Lampstand of Mercy: Pope Francis on the Family as the Joy of Love from page 1
the peripheries. With this new
fervor, mercy therefore should
be announced and brought into
the fringes of society. The Church
should promote the Gospel values
with the spirit of conversion so that
everyone will encounter the face of
God. Mercy and compassion should
be invoked. It is to be understood
that it is only Gods mercy that
is considered a medicine, a balm
and a cure of human sufferings
and Mercy is not tolerance, but
it is a cure of what is evil,Mercy
is an attribute of God in virtue
of which it brings forgiveness.

Amoris Laetitia, The Joy of Love

therefore is the new pathway, a new
fervor in proclaiming the good news
for families;love as the new pathway,
families therefore would not just be
kneeling Family Missionaries but
to become Family Missionaries of
Mercy.
Fr. Michael Kirwan is the
Director of Heythrop Institute:
Religion and Society and a lecturer at
the Department of Pastoral and Social
Studies, Heythrop College, University

the 43rd CFLA Annual Grand

Reunion and 10th Anniversary of
Responsible Parenthood-Natural
Family Planning (RP-NFP) last
June 4, 2016 at Manaoag Chapel,
Limketkai Center, Cagayan de
Oro City. All of the families
were given each a Certificate of
Commendation and some tokens.
The Archdiocesan Team visited
all of the ten (10) Vicariate
Nominees to really assure that
the given criteria for the selection
process must be respected. Home
Visitations were done by the
Validating Team and such activity
was very enriching experience by
the Archdiocesan Validators. The
activity had provided very deep
insights and such experience is
considered a best practice for the
archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro for
an integral evangelization.
After thorough deliberations
by the Validating Team, the Final
Nominee was then declared who
will represent the archdiocese
to the National Competition in
Manila. Finally, Mr. Virgilio and

Mrs. Anastacia Sumayang from

the Immaculate Conception Parish
of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental under
Vicariate 7 was selected. Their
nomination was then endorsed by
Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma
last July 27, 2016 to the National
Search Organizing Committee in
Manila.
There will be Festival of
Families that will be conducted to
kick off the Awards Night for the
National Search of Outstanding
Families 2016 at the SMX
Convention Center of the Mall
of Asia, Pasay City in Manila on
October 23, 2016. The festival aims
to highlight and strengthen family
unity through inspirational talks
for parents and children, short
videos, musical performances and
activities that children and their
parents can share while learning
to grow in their faith. It heeds
the call of the recently concluded
51st International Eucharistic
Congress to preserve the value of
family.

WISIWISI

SAKSAK-SINAGOL
NI PEPOYE

Mt 5:48/Leviticus 19:2/Ephesians 5:1

Kana gong bastabasta lang! WISIWISI! Daghan ganahan sa

WISIWISI kay dali ra mahuman. Ang pagWISIWISI man gud kay way
hago.
Basta
lang gud! WISIWISI! Daghan kang nahimo sa pagWISIWISI apan way
tarong. WISIWISI gani nga buhat maot gyud. Perting dalia, paspas, dili
na masabtan, libog, way gana, way lami, way klaro, pinadagan, lamalama,
mabuang estudyante. Ang pagwali nga WISIWISI, mubo ra gyud
apan ikaw ra dayon ang magsabot. Ang pagpanglaba nga WISIWISI,
linabhan samot kabaho. Ang pagpanghugas sa kinan-an nga WISIWISI,
gasawilsawil pa ang mumho. Ang pagmisa nga WISIWISI, 15 minutes
ra. HUMAN! (ganahan pud ka?) Ang pagluto nga WISIWISI, lasa dili
masabtan. Ang pagpanday nga WISIWISI, hirig ang balay. Ang pagkanta
nga WISIWISI, chorus ray kantahon. Ang pagsayaw nga WISIWISI,
puros lang kisikisi. Ang pag-eskwela nga WISIWISI, way kahumanan
nga K-12.
pagpangaon gani nga WISIWISI, way nguya-nguya tulon diretso. Ang
pagpanguyab nga WISIWISI, halok dayon ayha ilaila. Ang pag-ampo
nga WISIWISI, Amen dayon. Ang pagrosaryo nga WISIWISI, 120
kph. Sutoy lang! Hangos! Ang pagdrive nga WISIWISI, pasahero siging
ampo. Ang pagtanom nga WISIWISI, imbis talong gitanom pechay
ang miturok. Ang pagligo nga WISIWISI, murag nanghilam-os ra. Ang
pagtoothbrush nga WISIWISI, ngipon astang laguma. Ang pagpanghinlo
nga WISIWISI, hugaw dili maetsura. Ang pagdula nga WISIWISI,
duladula ra gyud.
Ang pagtuon
nga WISIWISI,
bagsak.
Ang
paglibang
nga
WISIWISI,
limtan
pagilo.
Ang
pagpangihi nga
WISIWISI,
basa karsunsilyo.
Ang pagsimba
nga WISIWISI,
ulahig
abot
una pa gyug uli.
Ang paghalad
nga WISIWISI,
tinagingting
lang. Ang pagexercise
nga
WISIWISI,
k u m a g k o
ug tudlo lang
ginapalihok
sabay tuyoktuyok
pagpasensiya kon kita tinud-anay gyud nga gasunod kang Kristo?Ihatag
langit. Kaya dapat tayong maging ganap, gaya ng ating Amang nasa
langit. BE PERFECT!
WISIWISI! Ang tawong gaWISIWISI gawitikwitik lang. Ang tawong
gawitikwitik gakitik kitik. Ang tawong gakitikkitik way klarong kapaingnan
ug bahalag asa lang kapaingon. Usa ka tawong mabaw + walay unod +
haw-ang + hanginon + bulala + hambog + takarag + gadalidali + mahilig
sa shortcut + maayo lang sa sinugdanan = WISIWISI.
Aron dili ta magWISIWISI ang angay natong buhaton mao nga
dili na ta magWISIKWISIK. Sa ato pa nga dili ta magkalat. Ihan-ay
FOCUS LANG! Daghan man gud
tag gusto nga mahitabo sa atong kinabuhi nga tungod sa kadaghan wala
na hinuoy saktong mahimo. Kamulong tan-awg sine kamulong text text
mao nang na-wrong send na hinuon. Kamulong tulog kamulong kaon.
Nguya-nguya kamulong hagok. Libog! Maong usa-usa lang sa ayha na
dayon ang uban. PATIENCE!
Nan,
magpakabalaan kita diha sa paghigugma. PRAY and LOVE MORE! Sakto
na oy! Naa ba moy nasabtan? Kon wala WISIWISI!

BULAN SA AGOSTO,
PYESTA NA USAB SA ARKIDIYOSESIS SA
CAGAYAN DE ORO,
ANG KATAWHAN MAGPASALAMAT SA
GINOO,
UG MAG-AMPO NGA ANG KALINAW
MOABOT NA UNTA SA MATAG TAWO.
i-ampo nato ang atong mga pangulo,
nga lamdagan sila kanunay sa Balaang
Espirito,
matinud-anong moserbisyo,
kaangayan ug kalamboan sa kabos maoy
sentro.
ANG GINOONG JESUS NAG-INGON,
WALA AKO MOANHI PARA SA MGA
MATARUNG IGSOON,
KON DILI SA MGA MAKASASALA UG MASALAYPON,
KAY DAKONG KALIPAY NIYA KON SA KALUWASAN SILA MAKAANGKON.
dinhi kita gisultian,
KINI INYO USAB UNTANG PAMALANDUNGAN.
pamalandong! kamo usab mamatay.
ANGAY INYO UNTANG MASABTAN,
KON NGANONG DINHI SA KALIBUTAN,
DALING MAMATAY ANG MGA TAWONG BUOTAN,
APAN ANG MGA BUANG UG LAMPINGASAN DUGAY NGA MOTALIWAN.
nganong ingon ani man ang katarungan,
kay kon mamatay ang tawong buotan,
langit man ang iyang dulngan,
apan kon dautan impyerno ang iyang adtoan.
MAONG DILI GUSTO ANG DIOS NGA ANG DAUTAN MA-IMPYERNO,
GUSTO SIYA MENTRAS WALA PA ANG KAMATAYON MAGBAG-O,
DILI SIYA BUOT NGA ANG KALAG NGA DAUTAN SA YAWA MAHIADTO,
ANG GINOO NAGPAKAMATAY PARA BAYA SA KALUWASAN SA MATAGTAWO.
hoy! ang sentro sa pyesta,
mao baya ang Santos nga Misa,
pasalamat sa katawhan tungod sa daghang grasya,
unya kon may hikay mopakaon sa tanan dili unta manira.
KAY KON IKAW WALA MAKASIMBA,
WALA KA MAKASAULOG SA PYESTA,
UG SA PAGKAON ANGAY KAS PUASA,
KAY WA MAN KA NAKAAPIL SA SANTOS NGA MESA.
ug ayaw kabalaka kon ikaw lutoson,
padayon lang sa imong pagka-matuohon,
kay ang Ginoong Jesus man miingon,
maluwas kadtong molahutay ug mopadayon.

A conflagration at 12:18 AM of
July 22, 2016 in Barangay 17, Cagayan
de Oro City rendered 269 families
homeless and one casualty due to
cardiac arrest. The survivors are
currently staying under the Marcos
Bridge as their temporary shelter.
As soon as one of the partners
of Social Action Center - Archdiocese
of Cagayan de Oro (SAC-ACDO)
heard about the news, a text

brigade for immediate assistance to

survivors began. The response was
overwhelming! They received: 31 sacks
of clothes for women (slacks, pants,
blouses, dresses, skirts, and shorts);
15 sacks for men (pants, shorts, polos,
jackets, and shirts), 1 sack of assorted
clothing for kids; and 2 sacks of baby
shirts.
The repacking was headed by the
sisters from the Association of Women
Religious of the Archdiocese of Cagayan
de Oro (AWRACO), and members from

MUST and Liceo de Cagayan University

also participated.
Partners and volunteers from
the Regional Emergency Assistance
Communications (REACT) Philippines
Inc., headed by Chief Lamberte
Excel Yap, helped in distributing the
repacked clothes.
Although
repacking
and
distributing the clothes had its
challenges, the volunteers found great
joy in helping those in need and in
being persons for others.

Ongoing PAMUKAW SA PAROKYA

at St. Joseph the Worker

Participants of Pamukaw sa Parokya

In answer to the Extraordinary

Jubilee of Mercy, the Council of Lay
Ecclesial Movements and Organizations
of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro
(CLEMOACO), Commission on Lay
Ecclesial Movements, Archdiocese
of Cagayan de Oro established the
Pamukaw sa Parokya. This is an
awakening kerygma initial formation
program with acronym of PagpaAmbit sa malipayong Mensahe, ang
Unang Kristohanong Asoy sa Wali to
reach out thepoor nominal Catholics
who are sacramentalized but not

evangelized, (PCP- II).

This was initiated by Tukod
volunteers using the Alpha Course
kerygma approach given in a very
simple and non-threatening manner
to the unchurched Catholics. At the
end of one-day session, the graduates
will have a sense of gratitude of
the Fathers love, the obedience and
redemption of Jesus, and the witness of
the Holy Spirit. They will start relating
with Jesus through simple prayer;
begin to love the Holy Eucharist;
appreciate a new way of life and being

a Church; and start to tell others of

their experience of compassion and
mercy.
This years one-day Pamukaw sa
Parokya includes the BEC Orientation
module talk developed by Ms. Venus
Guibone; Kerygma talks by Tukod;
Inner healing; and the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist.
Since July 9 up to August this year, St.
Joseph the Worker Parish in Macanhan
continues its Pamukaw sa Parokya
to the different seldas, couples and
families.

Hapag-Asa was born to touch

the lives of people especially the
undernourished children and their
families down to the grassroots level.
It is a program which integrates
various
activities
to
address
malnutrition and its sustainability,
a program that helps improved the
parents develop their aspects of life.
Today, it is present in Archdiocese
of Cagayan de Oro with the support of
our Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma
S.J., the help of Ms Luz Antiza P.
Denuyo and their active volunteers.
Hapag- Asa is bringing with high
hopes that the family and community
have a chance to face a better future.
Hapag-asa volunteer Danilo P.
Jimenez
Some people are born to prosper,
while others are born to help them
prosper. Such person is a 52 year
old Danilo Coach Dan Jimenez.
Even before he was a volunteer in
the Hapag-Asa Integrated Nutrition
Program (started on November 2013,
Hapag-asa ACDO in second time), he
was already the person who helped
the needy.
Coach Dan got his name as
coach because he is the Sepak
Takraw coach of Xavier UniversityAteneo de Cagayan and Liceo de
Cagayan University, both grade
school and high school for the
former and college for the latter. He
is the Regional Coordinator of the
Sepak Takraw Referees Association
of the Philippines (STRAP) of
Region- 10, and a member of the
Philippine Amateur of Sepak Takraw
Association (PASTA), and
Sepak
Takraw International Referee (IR).
He surely helped a lot of persons
about the sport. He also helps the
young by being one of the instructors
of Xavier University Grade School
(XUGS) Sports Clinic on the HapagAsa Community.
Sepak Takraw isnt the only way
he helped. He was the former Chief
of Operation-Oro Rescue 9000 for
14 years, the Cofounder and Vice
President of the Cagayan de Oro
Rescue (CDO-SAR) and is an Certified
Instructor of Basic Life Support,
First Aid, Water Search and Rescue
and Fire, and Bandaging conducted
by the 505th Rescue Phil. Air Force.
Because of these he helps during the
early childhood education and Parent
Education Classes for Reduction
Risk Management to the Hapag-Asa
Community for the areas that are
prone to floods.
Despite having a hectic schedule,
Coach Dan is one of the most active
volunteers in the health ministry,
especially Hapag-Asa. He is a person
born to help others. He is the person
that led others succeed. He is a person
that will lead you to prosperity.
