Hydraulic Tubing Cutter

The Welltools Hydraulic Tubing Cutter is a three-bladed tool,

which is used to cut down-hole production tubing, casing
and drill pipe.
Cutting operations are typically completed by running a BHA which includes a
hydraulic tubing anchor, Positive Displacement Motor (PDM) and hydraulic tubing
cutter. The hydraulic tubing anchor prevents the lateral movement of the cutter
blades, which is a common cause of failure. The Positive Displacement Motor
provides rotation with sufficient torque to ensure the cut is made. As the flow rate
through the assembly increases, the motor rotates and the Hydraulic Tubing Cutter
blades extend allowing the cut to be made.
The Welltools Hydraulic Tubing Cutter is actuated by circulating fluid through the
jet sub, which provides the pressure required to activate the dual piston and blade
cams. The jet sub incorporates interchangeable nozzles which can be adjusted
to suit the conditions. The dual-piston design maximises the cutting action and
ensures the blades are reliably extended.
Upward-facing jets help clean the cut area while also cooling the cutter blades.
On completion of the cut, the spring-loaded blade-return mechanism ensures the
cutter blades are returned to the run-in position and retained within the body of
the tool. The cutter blades can be dressed with a variety of cutting structures, with
each set of blades purpose-built and designed to suit the particular size and grade
of tubing/casing to be cut.
