Is now the

Tasers in N.J.?

TRENTON After Manchester police shot and

killed a knife-wielding man who was threatening suicide, law enforcement experts have said that police
need additional less lethal weapons like Tasers and
stun guns to subdue violent, disturbed or suicidal suspects without killing them.
Amid tight scrutiny from media and advocates, high
costs of hardware and byzantine restrictions from the
state, individual police departments in New Jersey
have been reluctant to adopt stun weapons, despite apparent suicides by cop happening nearly every year
along the Jersey Shore.
Despite their less lethal designation, Tasers and
other stun weapons carry risks of their own. Peaking at
50,000 volts, charged weapons have been linked to several deaths and cases of brain damage. Incapacitated
suspects can lose muscle control and fall on heads and
spines, risking injury and death. And civil rights advocates claim cops can get trigger-happy with stun guns,
abusing their tools against kids and non-violent suspects.

Stockbroker Louis Spina distinguished himself

Houdini, a magician noted for his daring escapes.
Years later, that fellow trader recounted Spi-

JACKSON - Each night as he goes to
bed, 95-year-old Frank Korker says the
same thing to his wife of 71 years.
Good night, Lola. See you tomorrow.
But Lola isnt there. She lives across
town in an assisted living facility. The 92year-old has been at Bartley Healthcare
Nursing and Rehabilitation for the past
three years after dementia prevailed.
Its the right place, as much as I want to bring her
home, Frank said.
Instead, he goes to her.

week. Their gift was another lunch together.

Louis Spina masterminded a Ponzi scheme that raked in more than $20 million
from 42 investors between August 2010 and November 2013. In May 2014, while
on pre-trial release for the scheme, Spina, shown above, robbed a Wells Fargo
bank in Coral Gables, Forida, and was sentenced to 79 months in federal prison.
