Textbook: Mathematics: Grade 8 Common Core, Holt McDougal


Course Description: This course will develop the major concepts of Algebra with an emphasis on
solving real-life problems.
Students will have to rely on their previous math knowledge and apply it in an
algebraic setting. Students
will take an in-depth journey into the concepts of functions, equations,
problem solving, and relationships
among whole numbers, decimals, fractions, integers, and irrational numbers.
Supply List:
Pencils (for the year)
Any Color Pens
Dry Erase Marker (not yellow)
1 subject notebook
3-Prong Folder with Pockets (2)
Loose Leaf Paper (for the year)

(OPTIONAL)
Scientific calculator (preferred model-TI 30x-IIS)
Colored Pencils/Markers/highlighter
Materials Needed Daily: textbook, math notebook, 1-2 pencils, loose leaf paper, folder, and agenda
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be prepared
Be on time with all necessary materials and homework completed.
2. Be respectful
Treat all people and property with respect.
3. Be responsible
Participate in class, complete & correct your homework and classwork, and use your
agenda.
4. Expect a challenge
Do your best and take pride in your work. If you do not understand - Ask Questions
Homework: When homework is assigned, its use for the next class is vital and therefore expected to
be completed. All
assignments must be completed in pencil and all work needs to be shown to receive
full credit. Grading is on
4 point scale:

Absences: When absent, you are expected to take responsibility to obtain and return all material
covered while you were
gone. Daily activities and work will be documented in the online homework calendar
found on the class website.
Any worksheets etc. will be labeled with your name and filed on the While You Were
Out table for you to pick up
when you return. If you miss a quiz or test, you will be expected to make it up as soon
as possible. The quizzes and
tests will be documented in the online homework calendar found on the class website. If
you miss more than one
day, contact the teacher to make arrangements for turning in your work or taking a
quiz/test.
Evaluations: Your final quarter grade is on a point system and will consist of the following
evaluations:

>Quizzes

Grading Scale: The standard grading scale in the student handbook will be used.
Agenda:

Your agenda must be filled out daily.

Grade Access: Grades are available on-line and can be accessed using the Infinite Campus
Parent/Student Portal. The John
Young website has a link on the homepage. Contact the school office to receive
information about your login.
Tutoring: There is tutoring daily after school until 4:00. Exceptions would be on days that there is
staff meeting or a parent
conference. Students need to be in the room by 3:30 for tutoring.
S.A.F.E 100 (Students Accountable for Education 100 Hall): One of your childs teachers will
be available from 3:30 4:00 Monday thru Thursday. This opportunity will be assigned by a teacher if
your child has missing work, absent work, or has missed class due to behavior. Students may also
choose to stay after if they need extra time to work or get help on homework.
Parents as Partners:
Family involvement is an essential element for a students success in mathematics. Be positive and
support homework, dont do it for them. Think of yourself as a guide rather than your childs teacher.
You can help by asking questions and listening. You may also help by visiting the online textbook it
has many resources and encouraging your child to take advantage of the tutorials, interactive
activities, and other online resources listed below.
