SOFiSTiK 2016

| Administration

Part I

Introduction

SOFiSTiK 2016

General | Administration

General

This manual shall describe the necessary steps installing, updating and administrating the SOFiSTiK software and the corresponding licensing technology. Information on first steps running the software itself can be found in the manual
SOFISTIK.
Hint
i

Type of Installation and Differences

The installation of the software and its licensing are independent and can
be performed separately. Please use the tables given below to select the
installation type which suits your requirements.

Hint
!

All SOFiSTiK 2016 programs require the WIBU CodeMeter licensing

technology and the current software service year entry 2016 (via SSD or
Teddy Help Licensinfo you may check your software service year). If you
do not have a current software-service please contact your local SOFiSTiK
partner or info@sofistik.com directly. Please take care of the hints for
licensing / license update below.

1.1

System requirements

Detailed system requirements for the SOFiSTiK products of version 2016 can
be found here:
http://getafix.sofistik.de/freeware/.misc/system_requirements_2016_1.pdf.

1.2

Important for Licensing / License Update

Since version 2012 the License Update program (also available via SONAR) can
directly update local CodeMeters when connected to the internet. The automatic
update will directly update CodeMeters which are connected to the computer
where License Update is started.
Updating a network license will require that you start the License Update on the
machine where the network license CodeMeter is connected, or you connect

SOFiSTiK 2016

1-1

Administration | General

the network CodeMeter with that very machine you start the update from. If you
encounter any problem please contact support@sofistik.de.
Hint
!

We recommend to limit the validity of your licenses to 90 days. Under

these requirements we can offer you a replacement dongle at a cost of
250,00 EUR. Unlimited licenses will be substituted only for the price of a
multi licence.

Windows Installation

2.1

Download of the installations

Installations of all SOFiSTiK products can be found in the freeware section of the
SOFiSTiK ftp-Servers (http://ftp.sofistik.de/freeware/) in the respective subfolder
/installation:

SOFiSTiK Statik, SOFiPLUS, SOFiPLUS-X, FEA Extension for Revit and

Rhino Interface incl. SONAR:
http://ftp.sofistik.de/freeware/statik/installation/.
E.g. installation for 2016: sofistik 2016r1.exe.

SOFiCAD, SOFiCAD-OEM (only German) and SONAR:

http:ftp.sofistik.de/freeware/cad/installation/.

SONAR and License Update e.g. for network license servers without program installation:
http://ftp.sofistik.de/freeware/sonar/installation/.

BIM-Products (Reinforcement Detailing, Reinforcement Generation, BIMTOOLS etc.) are only available via Autodesk Exchange Apps.

Please download the suitable installation and save it in a folder where you have
full access rights (e.g. your Desktop).

2.2

Extraction and Start of the installation

Hint
!

Please stop all anti-virus software or scanners before installing and

make sure that all necessary platform-products (e.g. AutoCAD 2016 for
SOFiPLUS, Revit 2016 for the FEA Extension, Rhinoceros 5 64-Bit for the
Rhino Interface) are installed before starting the SOFiSTiK Installation.
After downloading the installation file, it should be extracted by double-click and
start the setup automatically.

SOFiSTiK 2016

2-1

Administration | Windows Installation

The installations of version 2016 will be extracted to the temporary folder of the
respective user. In case you need to start the installation manually please click
on the setup.exe.

2.3

First installation: Setup Mode

After the language selection the installation will start in setup mode for the first
installation. The installation of the CodeMeter runtime (licensing) and SONAR
(for updates of the software and licensing) is integrated into the installation procedure.
The setup wizard will check the necessary prerequisites for the installation and
possibly install required packages.
Hint
!

After installation of the necessary packages the setup might require

to reboot your machine. Please save all open files. The installation will
continue after the reboot.

2-2

SOFiSTiK 2016

Windows Installation | Administration

After clicking on Next you may select the wanted packages for installation, depending on available licensing and platforms you may now select them for installation. After confirming the selection with Next you will see a summary and will
be able to start the final installation procedure.

SOFiSTiK 2016

2-3

Administration | Windows Installation

2.4

Adding components and uninstall: Maintenance Mode

If an existing installation is detected, or an uninstallation was started via Windows Programs and Features the setup will start in Maintenance mode, allowing
to Add or Remove Features or to uninstall the version completely. Please follow
the instructions after clicking Next .

2.5

No longer available with 2016: Network Installation

Hint
!

Since modern operating systems do not allow loading e.g. .dlls via
network ressources the software may only be installed local on client machines. If only the FEA analysis modules are required, one may install the
software on a server machine and add e.g. a suitable Teddy shortcut to another machine (the client) manually. In case a network installation should
enable multiple synchronous client updates of the software, we recommend
the SONAR Batch Mode.

Silent-Installation for FEA and SOFiCAD

3.1

General hints

Hint
!

Attention: The silent installation has to be started with Administrator

rights, because this rights are needed to write into the program folder respectively into the registry. Viz. the command window, respectively the
process which starts the silent installation, must have administrator rights!
Hint
!

Important for installation of SOFiPLUS-X or SOFiCAD-OEM:

Before executing the setup_silent.exe or the created batch file, the
.NET4.5 Framework must be installed. For more information see Section
SOFiPLUS-X or SOFiCAD-OEM Installation.
The silent installation can be performed using the setup_silent.exe, which can
be found on the DVD or respectively in the downloaded ZIP file.
In addition to an initial installation it is also possible to add or remove specific
programs or to completely uninstall all programs.
The silent installation can be controlled using the configuration file
silent.config. The file can be found in the directory setup\silent.
The file name must be passed to the setup_silent.exe using the parameter
/config:.
Call:
setup_silent.exe "/config:C:\install\silent.config"
Depending on the value of the option CMD_TARGET_DIR in the configuration file,
either the installation will be performed or a batch file including all calls for executing the installation packages will be created.
The setup_silent.exe creates a log file in the TEMP directory:
%TEMP%\sofistik_silent_setup.log

Update of the SOFiSTiK software with SONAR | Administration

Update of the SOFiSTiK software with SONAR

Due to continuous development of our programs it might be that newer versions

have already been released at the time of your SOFiSTiK Software installation.
The latest versions of the programs are available on our Server (ftp.sofistik.de).
You are able to download the latest program packages (*.zip for Windows,
*.tgz for Linux), which can then be unzipped into your SOFiSTiK directory. This
procedure is automated by the program SONAR. SONAR is also able to show
you the latest changes made to the programs.
Hint
i

4.1

In the following paragraphs all the individual programs (AQUA, SOFiPLUS, SOFICABD, ...) are referred to as modules.

SONAR - Standard Mode, Updating an Installation

SONAR is a so-called Wizard which provides you with a step-by-step procedure

during the update.
On the first page you are able to specify the paths of
your SOFiSTiK installations. When SONAR is launched, it tries to determine all
installation paths automatically.
You can temporarily exclude an installation from update by unchecking its checkbox. To remove an installation permanently, press the remove button (marked
with a red X), which is located on the right side of each path.
Additionally you have the choice to download your Codemeter license file directly
from our download server. To do so, click on the button Start License Update .
The download settings are located on the second page of the wizard.
settings are divided in the following sections:

The

Kind of Update
1.

Automatic Update (recommended)

With this option set, SONAR will automatically update every module, for
which a newer versions is available.

2.

Manual Update
This option allows you to decide separately for each module, if it shall be

SOFiSTiK 2016

4-1

Administration | Update of the SOFiSTiK software with SONAR

updated. The decision will be made on page 3 of the wizard. Also use this
option, if you want to download hotfix versions.
Force SONAR Update
SONAR updates itself, whenever a newer version is available. If, for some
reason, this self update failed, you can check this option to force SONAR
to update itself to the latest available version.

3.

Download Source
Choose here if you want to download from an SOFiSTiK server (default) or from
a directory in your local network (comp. Ch. 5.3). In the former case select the
server (e.g. SOFiSTiK HTTP Server Highspeed) from the drop down menu.
Please check if you have a direct connection to the internet or if a proxy server
is used. If you are using a proxy server, you have to specify the proxy server
settings. To do so, click on the toolbox symbol right from the server selection
box. All necessary proxy settings can be entered using the proxy configuration
dialog. If you dont know which settings are correct, please ask your network
administrator.
Download Options
You can decide whether you want to download the module manuals. If you
choose the option Download and Install Manuals, the downloaded manuals
will be copied to the installation folder.
Hint
i

If you have added your own comments to the SOFiSTiK manuals, you
probably dont want them to be overwritten. In this case select the option Only Download Manuals. After the update process, you can then
import the comments into the new manual (using the appropriate Adobe
Plugin).

Download Into This Directory: This is the temporary directory in which

SONAR will save all the downloaded packages (e.g. ase.zip), which are then
unzipped to the installation directories. If you have not selected Packages remain in the download directory (default behavior), downloaded packages will
be removed automatically when the update has finished.

4-2

SOFiSTiK 2016

Update of the SOFiSTiK software with SONAR | Administration

Hint
i

Before starting the download, SONAR checks what packages are already existing in the local download directory. Existing packages, that
are up-to-date, will not be downloaded again, which can speed up the
update procedure significantly. For this to work, the option Packages
remain in the download directory must be checked.

Authentication
The login name (ftp-sofistik) is already set. All you have to do, is enter the correct
password. Without a valid password you are not able to access the download
server. If you dont know the password, please contact our Customer Service.
Manual update only: On the third page of the wizard, all the installations you
have selected on page 1 are displayed as a tree structure. The tree consists
of four columns:
1.

Application: shows the type and version of the installation (e.g. SOFiPLUS
2016 x64), as well as the installation folder path.

2.

Local Version: shows the current version of the installation. The version
consists of a major version number and a service pack number.

3.

Latest Version: shows the most current available version.

4.

Date: column lists the release date of the latest version.

Hint
i

If you have selected a SOFiPLUS or SOFiCAD installation, you will

also see three entries called Shared, Common and AutoCAD
(2016_x64). They contain modules that are used by SOFiPLUS as well
as SOFiCAD.

To be able to see the modules of an application, you have to expand the corresponding tree node by clicking on the + symbol. Now individual modules can be
selected or deselected. Only selected modules will be updated!
Hint
i

Normally you dont have to care about handling individual modules.

All modules, for which a newer version is available, are preselected
automatically.

SOFiSTiK 2016

4-3

Administration | Update of the SOFiSTiK software with SONAR

For your convenience there is also a context menu available, which can be activated by right-clicking on one of the modules. The menu has the following
entries:
Show ChangeLog: Shows all changes that are introduced by the latest version
of the selected module. This feature is very useful if you want to know what
exactly will be affected by updating a specific module.
Alle Module selektieren: This option selects all modules of an installation for
update.
Hint
i

Modules that already are up to date will get selected as well.

Deselect all modules: This option deselects all modules of an installation.

Show all available modules: With this option you can force the program to
show all available modules, that is, also modules, that are not installed locally.
These modules can then be selected for download as well. Please consider that
you need a valid license in the case of chargeable modules.
Show hotfixes: Enable this option to download hotfixes. SONAR will mark
hotfix versions in red to signalize that the use is at your risk.
You can start the download and subsequent installation by pressing the Next
button. During the update process you receive useful information about the
progress.
4.1.1

SONAR Troubleshooting

During the update process appears an unzip error message:

Possibly the module you want to update is still in use. Please close all SOFiSTiK
4-4

SOFiSTiK 2016

Update of the SOFiSTiK software with SONAR | Administration

applications (also AutoCAD if youre updating SOFiPLUS or SOFiCAD) and

press Retry on the message dialogue. If the error persists, press Ignore (not
available for mandatory modules). Wait for the other updates to finish, close
SONAR and repeat the update procedure for those modules.
The connection to the download server cannot be established
Please check the following points:
1.

Does your internet connection work at all? If you use an access software
(like AOL), create a connection first.

2.

Open a command interface (on Windows: MS-DOS Command Prompt) and

type the following: ping ftp.sofistik.de Normally you should receive a positive answer. If not, outgoing connections may use a proxy server. For each
protocol you have to specify the appropriate Proxy Server (HTTP, SOCKS)
in SONAR. If you have doubts about the setting, please ask your network
admin.

3.

Other connections (like www.sofistik.com within a web browser) can be established, but SONAR still fails to connect: First try to download from an
HTTP server (HTTP Server OSH), which must be set in step 2. If SONAR
still hangs you probably have a Proxy server in your network which must be
specified also in step 2.

4.

Connections to other FTP servers can be established without problems, but

not to the SOFiSTiK FTP server:
In general we allow passive and active FTP connections. The problem
could be caused by a so called firewall, which may reject some connections.
Please ask you network administrator if passive connections are allowed.
If the problem still remains check if there is a Proxy server in your network
and/or download from an HTTP server.

Please check the above mentioned points with your network administrator, before contacting our Customer Service, because we dont have any influence on
your network settings. If you have checked all points and the problem persists,
feel free to contact our support support@sofistik.de.

4.2

SONAR - Mirror Mode

This mode allows you to mirror parts of the official SOFiSTiK download server.
Administrators can use this feature to achieve a consistent configuration of all
workstations by storing specific versions of the SOFiSTiK applications on the
network. Another advantage is that internet traffic can be minimized this way.
Users in your network are able to download from the local mirror path with

SOFiSTiK 2016

4-5

Administration | Update of the SOFiSTiK software with SONAR

SONAR, if they specify the local download source in step 2. To use the mirror
mode, SONAR must be started with the following parameters:
sonar -s<OPTION> <LOCAL-MIRROR-PATH>
sonar -u<OPTION> <LOCAL-MIRROR-PATH>
The parameter -s opens up a dialog, in which you can configure the
download and proxy server settings before mirroring starts.
Using the parameter -u, this configuration step is skipped and SONAR uses
the last saved settings. This mode is especially helpful when used in automated
scripts. See following table for valid options:

4.3

SONAR - Batch Mode

This mode allows installation of updates without user interaction. Thus, it primarily addresses administrators needing to update multiple client machines. Batch
mode is available through the program sonar_clt.exe from the SONAR folder.
All settings can be configured in a configuration file. A template for such a configuration file can be found in the SONAR folder (sonar_batch_conf.ini). This
file also contains comments that describe the various settings. Run the program
on the client with the following parameters:
sonar_clt -c configfile [-l login] [-p password]
The process returns 0 in case all programs were updated successfully. A log file

4-6

SOFiSTiK 2016

sonar_log.txt is created in the working directory.

Under Linux since version 2016 is the graphical mode no longer available. Using
the batch mode is hence mandatory under Linux.
