Architecture, Planning, and Design

Design professionals solve complex
problems and serve a broad range of
clients. Grouping all the design professions in one college matches educational objectives with professional realities.
We believe this is accomplished with
departments and accredited programs
of superior quality, depth, and range.
The college strives to maintain the
K-State tradition of emphasizing competence, thoroughness, and the mastery
of knowledge and skills. We encourage
thoughtful, searching attitudes. Courses
in history, theory, human behavior,
technology, construction, planning, and
professional practice provide students
the insights needed to enter professional practice.
The college takes advantage of the
intellectual resources available in the
related disciplines of our university. Our
professional curricula enable students
to participate in a range of field studies,
study abroad, and extended internships.
Our diverse faculty is composed of
professors who care deeply about their
fields and who are strongly committed
to sharing their knowledge, experience,
and excitement. Many faculty are practicing professionals or are engaging in
scholarly or applied research; all are
dedicated to quality teaching as their
primary responsibility.

Degree programs

High school preparation

K-States College of Architecture,

Planning, and Design offers a nondesign professional degree program:
Regional and Community Planning

Entering freshmen and transfer students

must have fulfilled each of the following
math prerequisites prior to entering the
college:
1 unit of Algebra I
1 unit of Algebra II
1 unit of Geometry
1/2 unit in Trigonometry (may be
incorporated in another course)

If you are interested in this degree, contact the Director of Student Recruitment
at archdesstuserv@k-state.edu.
K-States College of Architecture,
Planning, and Design also offers three
accredited professional design degree
programs:
Architecture
Interior architecture and product
design
Landscape architecture
Students who choose architecture,
interior architecture and product design,
or landscape architecture must apply by
February 1, and will start their education
in environmental design studies.

Environmental design studies

The program provides an introduction
to the design professions of architecture, interior architecture, and landscape
architecture. For most students, it is an
introduction to a way of seeing and
thinking about the environments we
occupy. It is more than drawing. The
studio introduces the visual and verbal
vocabulary employed in the creation,
definition, and communication of space.
In addition to history, studio, and an
introduction to the design professions,
students take classes in oral and written English, mathematics, and physics.
Academic advising, a critical component
of the beginning students experience in
a demanding professional curriculum,
is provided by a professional academic
advisor.

High school students are encouraged to

complete a college preparatory curriculum including:
Calculus
4 units of English
History
312 to 4 units of mathematics
3 to 4 units of science, including
physics
3 to 4 units of social studies
2 to 4 units of foreign language
In addition, courses that are helpful in
developing creative abilities should be
taken if time permits. With respect to
drawing, we recommend courses in
both freehand drawing and technical
drawing. High school students planning to take courses for college credit
are encouraged to contact the colleges
director of student recruitment for
advice about courses that will meet the
colleges program requirement.

Selective admission deadline

All documents must be postmarked
no later than February 1 to receive
consideration.

Selective admission
The number of students who can enter
the College of Architecture, Planning,
and Design is limited, and admission
is competitive.
All documents must be postmarked no
later than February 1 to receive full consideration. The College of Architecture,
Planning, and Design begins review of
complete applications February 1. Meeting this deadline does not guarantee
admission to the college. Students are
considered on the basis of academic
performance and space availability.
Students will be notified of the College
of Architecture, Planning, and Designs
admission decision by mid-March.
High school students must submit
an official high school transcript and
official ACT or SAT scores, along with
the university application (indicating
architecture, planning, and design as
intended major) and nonrefundable fee
to the K-State Office of Admissions.
Transfer students must submit official
transcripts from all colleges they have
attended, along with the university
application (indicating architecture,
planning, and design as the intended
major) and nonrefundable fee to
K-States Office of Admissions.
Students planning to transfer into the
program are urged to contact the
College of Architecture, Planning, and
Designs associate dean of student services for advice about courses that may
meet the colleges requirements.
The K-State application can be found at
www.k-state.edu/admit/apply.
The college strongly suggests having an
alternative academic plan in the event
of not being admitted to the College of
Architecture, Planning, and Design.

Satisfactory academic
progress
The professional programs in architecture, interior architecture and product
design, and landscape architecture
extend from the second through fifth
years. Students enter the second year
after successfully completing the environmental design studies curriculum
and maintaining a strong cumulative
grade point average. In all departments,
the number of students who may
continue in each program is limited by
the availability of faculty, space, and
equipment.
All students will apply to graduate
school in spring of the third year. The
GPA in the last 60 credits will determine
admission. Once admitted to graduate
school, students will complete at least
30 credits of graduate course work in
the fourth and/or fifth years. All students completing architecture, interior
architecture and product design, and
landscape architecture will earn an
accredited masters degree.
