The headright system

A legal grant of land to
settlers was originally created in 1618 in
Jamestown, Virginia.
It was introduced as a means to solve the labor
shortage
With the emergence of tobacco farming, a large
supply of workers was needed. New settlers who paid
their way to Virginia received 50 acres of land.
Rich people could also pay for others to come over.
They would get these peoples 50 acres, and in turn,
get their labor for 7 years (Indentured Servants)
