Re: Oaklands Active Transportation Program Application for Safe Route to School
Crossing to Safety Project
It is with great excitement that Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO) writes in support
of the City of Oakland's application for a Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP)
Safe Route to School (SRTS) grant to fund school crossing and bicycle/pedestrian
infrastructure improvements at three locations.
This is a thoughtful, achievable, well-targeted package of school access improvements
that genuinely reflects the priorities and diversity of our members and community
partners. Fruitvale Avenue, 98th Avenue, and Park Boulevard are all vital neighborhoodserving corridors, but their car-centric designs act as unnecessary barriers to active travel
for many school families and neighbors.
By updating crosswalks, adding bike lanes, and installing more effective crossing
treatments near schools along these key streets, the City would be addressing critical
safety issues and encouraging more and more trips to be taken on foot and bicycle
thus jump-starting the positive feedback cycle that leads to healthier, more connected,
and sustainable communities.
We thank the City of Oakland for their efforts, and thank the state for consideration of
the application and strongly encourage you to fully fund these projects.
Sincerely,

Chris Hwang

RE: Support for Oaklands Active Transportation Program Application for Safe Routes To
School Crossing To Safety
Dear Ms Landreth:
On behalf of Reach Academy, I write in strong support of the City of Oakland's application
for a Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP) Grant to fund bicycle/pedestrian
infrastructure improvement at 98th Avenue and Sunnyside Street to ensure safety.
For years, we have advocated for improved street safety infrastructure in our neighborhood.
Students and familes crossing 98th Avenue at Sunnyside Street are exposed to high-volumes
of speeding and unsafe vehicles traveling through the intersection. The addition of a
pedestrian signal will make crossing 98th Ave. safer for all, especially for our children.
We strongly support the 98th Avenue/Sunnyside St. improvements for Safe Routes to School
and urge you to fund this project.
Sincerely,

Natasha Moore, Principal

Re: Support for Oaklands Active Transportation Program Application for Safe Route To
School Crossing To Safety Project
Dear Ms Landreth,
On behalf of Bike East Bay and Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, I write in strong support of the
City of Oakland's application for a Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP) Safe Route To
School Grant to fund bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure improvements along Fruitvale Avenue
th
between International Bl and Foothill Bl, 98
Avenue at Sunnyside Street, and Park Blvd. at
th
th
Excelsior/Grosvenor and at E. 38/13Avenue.
We support the projects updated crosswalks, muchneeded bike lanes in place of vehicle
travel lanes, and installing RRFBs and HAWK signals at crossing locations adjacent to
elementary schools. Both Park Blvd and Fruitvale Avenue are extremely dangerous and
intimidating streets for kids to walk to school and commuters to bike to work and have been
waiting too long for these needed safety improvements. With enhanced bicycle and
pedestrian facilities, the proportion of trips accomplished by biking and walking will increase
in the vicinity of the project areas, safety and mobility will be increased for nonmotorized
users, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are excited to see the needed
implementation of these design recommendations to calm traffic come to fruition.
We thank you for and strongly encourage you to fully fund these projects.
Sincerely,
