Problem Set 1
PROBLEM 1
A thin plate is separated from two fixed plates by very
viscous liquids with viscosities 1 and 2, respectively.
The spaces between plates h1 and h2 are unequal, as
shown. The contact area is A between the center plate
and each fluid. Assuming linear velocity distribution in
each fluid, (a) derive the force F required to pull the
plate at velocity V. Is there a (b) necessary relation
between the two viscosities 1 and 2?
PROBLEM 2
A hydraulic lift of the type commonly used for
greasing automobile consists of a 280.18-mmdiameter cylinder, the annular space being filled
with oil having a kinematic viscosity of 0.00042
m2/s and specific gravity of 0.86. If the rate of
travel of the ram is 0.22 m/s, find the frictional
resistance when 2 m of the ram is engaged in the
cylinder.

PROBLEM 3
The system is open to 1 atm on the right side.
If L = 120 cm, what (a) is the air pressure in
container A? Conversely, if pA = 135 kPa, what (b)
is the length L?

PROBLEM 4
To monitor the pressure in three
pipes, a manometer setup was installed
in one section of the system. At a
particular instant, the gage pressure in
pipe B is 7200 lb/ft2. Using the pressure
at this pipe as a starting point,
determine (a) the absolute pressure (in
psia) in pipe A and (c) the gage pressure
(in psig) in pipe C.

PROBLEM 5
The tank has a 4-cm-diameter plug at the
bottom on the right. All fluids are at 20 C. The plug
will pop out if the hydrostatic force on it is 25 N.
For this condition, what will be the reading h on
the mercury manometer on the left side?

PROBLEM 6
Gate ABC has a fixed hinge line at B and is 2 m
wide into the paper. The gate will open at A to
release water if the water depth is high enough.
Compute the depth h for which the gate will
begin to open.

PROBLEM 7
A rectangular gate AB serves as a sluice gate
that automatically opens when the water level
rises. What should be the minimum weight of the
gate per meter if it is on the verge of opening at
the water level shown?

PROBLEM 8
Gate AB is 3 m wide into the paper and is
connected by a rod and pulley to a concrete
sphere (SG = 2.40). What diameter of the sphere
is just sufficient to keep the gate closed?

PROBLEM 9
Curved panel BC is a 60 arc, perpendicular to
the bottom at C. If the panel is 4 m wide into the
paper, estimate the resultant hydrostatic force of
the water on the panel.

PROBLEM 10
Determine the force F required to hold the
cone in the position shown. Assume the cone is
weightless.

PROBLEM 11
The 4-ft-diameter log (SG = 0.80) is 8 ft long into
the paper and dams water as shown. Compute the
net vertical and horizontal reactions at point C.

PROBLEM 12
A reservoir of glycerin has a mass of 1200 kg
and a volume 0.952 m3. Find its (a) weight, (b)
unit weight, (c) mass density and (d) specific
gravity.
PROBLEM 13
A cylindrical tank 80 cm in diameter and 90-cm
high is filled with liquid. The tank and liquid
weighed 420 kg. The weight of the empty tank is
40 kg. What are the (a) specific weight and (b)
density of the liquid?

PROBLEM 14
A thin wire ring, 3 cm in diameter, is lifted from a water surface at 20 C. Neglecting the wire weight,
what is the force required to lift the ring?
