Issues/ Problems/ Events

Pupils are very poor in their writing skills.
I realised that a majority of pupils in my class often left out conjunctions, articles

and prepositions when they are writing sentences.

Thoughts And View Regarding The Issues/ Problems/ Events
I discovered this problem during one of my writing lessons recently. Pupils are

given sentence notes and they are required to combine the sentence notes to
write a short text. They had an idea about the content of the text that they were
writing but they did not include grammar items such as the, a, and, but to

make their sentence gramatically correct.

If actions were not taken to overcome this issue, this will greatly affect their

performance especially in their UPSR writing skill.

Analysis Of Issue/ Problems/ Events
3.1 Causes
Low English proficiency
Weak grammar foundation
Lack of English exposure
Influence of mother tongue
3.2 Strengths/ Weaknesses
Pupils writing skill will be greatly affected.
They could not score a good mark in answering questions that tested their
writing skill.
3.3 Predicted Effects/ Outcomes (If No Actions Were Taken)
Pupils will not be able to write grammatically correct sentences.
Objective of the lesson failed to achieve.
Suggestions To Overcome The Causes/ Weaknesses
One of the ways to overcome this problem is integrating grammar with other
skills. For example, reading texts can become rich contexts for the practice of a
variety of grammatical forms. Subsequently, pupils can become familiar with the

correct usage of grammar and more sensitive with articles, conjunctions and

preposition when they are writing.

Use more interesting way to teach grammar item such as songs and jazz
chants. Many songs and jazz chants have a lot of in-built repetition of structures

and this serves as a good consolidation of grammar structure.

Use controlled writing technqiue such as substitution table for pupils to pratice
error-free wiritng. Whichever word or phrase the pupils choose to use, they will
not make any error. It helps pupils to gain a mastery of sentence patterns. To
offset the problem of boredom, I can use subject matter that is interesting and
relevant.

Timeframe To Overcome The Causes/ Weaknesses

Two months (Throughout the practicum period)
Progress of Overcoming the Issue
I always integrate grammar with other skills such as listening and speaking,
reading, writing and even language arts. Whenever I realized pupils
grammatical mistakes, I will correct him/her and draw other pupils attention to

the mistake too.
