GENERAL
Clauses in this Worksection cover screeds and toppingseither laid on agreen concrete base
(monolithic), laid and bondedto ahardenedconcrete base or laid separately withoutbondingto
thesubstrate.

Althoughlightweight cementitious screeds laid on roofs enable the designerto obtainthe required
falls withoutimposingexcessiveloading they do not bythemselves, providethe degree of
insulation requiredunless laid to unacceptable thicknesses. All lightweight screedscan absorb
considerable amounts ofrainwater unless protectedand must notbe laid directly on a vapour
barrier. No fines lightweight aggregate/cement screeds should be toppedwith a sand cement
screed 13mmthick.

It is often desirable to have manufacturers or suppliers laytheir ownproduct, thus assuringthat

GENERAL
Sprayed mineralfibre coatings consistofabase material, binding agentand filler. The base
materialis usuallyeithermineralfibre, exfoliated vermiculite or expandedperlite. Typical
bindingagentsare Portland cement, high aluminacementorgypsumplaster, typicalfillers are
hydratedlime, limestone or other aggregate. Wherethe coating isto be fmishedwith a decorative
or protective fmish, it is essentialthat thefmish is compatible with thesprayedmineralcoating
and doesnot impairitsperformance.
Formal requirements regardingcompliance with CDMregulationsare contained in Preliminaries

GENERAL
Aesthetic considerations meanthat specifiers will wishto specify floor coverings by manufacturer
and reference. Althoughit may seem unecessaryto requirecompliance with a relevantBritish
Standard, especiallywhenmost manufacturers now claim afarbetterperfonnancethanthat
requiredby the BS, the Standards have beenincludedinthis specification to provide abasic

PAINTINGANDCLIAR FINIShING

Two coats ofemulsion paintshouldnormallybe scheduledexcept wherewhite or similarlight

tints are to be selected, whenthreecoats may be necessary. Emulsionpaints shouldnotbe used
on lightweightmineral fibreliningsorinsulation, dueto the fire hazard.
BS7119 classifies threetypes ofemulsion paint as follows:

Type A: Generalpurpose, protective anddecorative (mattor mid-sheen). It is decorative and

protectiveinfunction, offeringgooddurabilityand wearing propertiesin most conditions. The
choiceofsheen level may dependon locationand aesthetic considerations, but, in general,
washabilityincreases with the level ofsheen.
Type B: Low wear resistance (matt). For use as first decorationofporous substrates containing
moisture, it can alsobeusedfor areas oflow wear, needinghigh obliteration. eg. ceilings. Higher
pigmentationgives increased hiding power andporositycompared with type A, but atthe expense
ofadecreaseinwashability. Only mattfmishis availableand increased porosity permitsthe
dryingout ofanyresidualmoisture in the substrate. It isunsuitableforredecorationwork.
Type C: Highwear andmoistureresistance (mattor mid-sheen). Similarto type Abut with a
higher resisitanceto wear and moisture and havingproperties much like oil basedfmishpaints.
This paint is suitable forhighlytraffickedareas or areas requiring a high degree ofmoisture
resistance.

Exteriorwood stainsare ofseveral types eg low-solids and water-borne. They have alsobeen

describedas decorative wood preservatives, water-repellant preservativestains, water-repellant

fmishesand impregnation stainsand are classified in BS 6952. Generally these fmishespenetrate

Gold leafis available in 'regular' or 'fine' quality, single or double leaf. Fine quality should
normallybe used for exterior work and regularqualityforinteriorwork. Inexternallocations
exposedto the weather, where appearance is not ofparamountimportance, consider use ofbronze
metallicpaint in place ofgold leaf.

This schedule is derived from BS 1710 and coversbasic identification coloursfor pipelines.
Wherethe alternative ofcolourbandingonly, or additional bandingin safetycoloursis required,
this shouldbe specifiedusing anon-standardclause.
Paint systemsfor pipesto be colouridentifiedmustbe separately scheduled at clauseM590. The
