Kindergarten Curriculum Night

Miss Kanous
2016-2017
Philosophy and Goals:
I believe that children need a warm, nurturing, and secure environment to
develop a love of learning. Children will grow through developmentally
appropriate activities that support their individual level and learning style. Each
child will grow as a learner through a balanced literacy program, cooperative
learning, and integrated curriculum. Through rich learning experiences children
will have full access to construct their own knowledge and strengthen their
skills across all domains: cognitive, social, emotional, aesthetic, physical, and
language acquisition.

Brain Food Snacks:

It is important that your child brings a healthy snack to school each day.
Snacks may include fruits, vegetables, crackers, cheese, yogurt, rice cakes,
granola bars, etc.

Please send your child a water bottle with a sports cap or spill proof top to
school each day. Staying hydrated is a very important part of learning.
Students may only have water in the classroom; please no juice, soft drinks, or
sport drinks.
We have a child in our classroom this year with a severe peanut and
tree nut allergy. Tree nuts are essentially everything other than peanuts including (but not limited to): almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, pine nuts,
cashews, pistachios, etc. When packing snacks for your child to eat in the
classroom, please take care to pack snacks that do not contain nuts. Your
cooperation is greatly appreciated and helps ensure the safety of the class.
Please avoid snacks with the following labeling:
"Contains: any type of nut"
"May Contain: any type of nut"
"Processed on Shared Equipment With: any type of nut"
"Made in a facility that processes: any type of nut"
This information is USUALLY called out separately, often in bold, at the end of
the ingredients list on most packaging.
Note - Coconut is NOT a tree nut and is safe!

*Please pack your childs snack separate from their lunch.

This will make it easier for them to adapt to the morning
routine and help us with a quick transition.

Parent Involvement/Communication:
Feel free to reach me through email. I will check my email several times a day
including school hours. I will send home occasional newsletters that will update

Classroom Management:
We will try to work out any problems that occur by communication and class
meetings where we can safely discuss feelings, reflect, debrief, and role-play
situations. As a team we will discuss and write down the important
rules/promises our classroom should always follow. When children struggle to
make positive choices, they will be given 3 opportunities throughout the day to
change their behavior and make better choices. In this case, students will fill
out a reflection sheet, which will be sent home for a parent or guardian to sign
and return the following day.

I want children to understand the expectations I have for them. I will spend a

expected outcomes. Throughout activities I will use childrens work samples as
models. It is important for children to see what projects and assignments
should look like and value quality work. I expect all of the children to try their
personal best. Many of the assessments will be observations and conversations
with students during small group work and individual conferences. I will also be
using grades and evaluate student work and achievement. More information to
follow.
