The Change on the 30th

After the People Power Revolution that was aimed to liberate Marcos tyranny,
many thought that their lives would change crimes will stop, corruptions will
eradicate and poverty will end. But that may be wrong, for the Philippines is for
worse off 30 years after the Edsa Revolution. If the People Power was good, why are
people lives still bad? If the People Power was good, why is the government still
riddled by corruption? If the People Power was good why are we living in fear of
crimes and suffer poverty?
Under the Marcos administration, in his first term, he stabilized the financial
standing of the government through intensified tax collections, improve agricultural
production and strengthen foreign relations of the Philippines. The most important
developments he made during his regime were the Economic programs he
implemented including incentives to farmers (where the Philippines became a selfsufficient in rice and became a rice exporter), programmed Kilusang Kabuhayan,
and boosting tourism industry. It is undeniable that the Philippines was at the
golden age at those years. Yet with the establishment of the new Republic of the
Philippines and the lifting of the Martial Law, followed by the assassination of Ninoy
Aquino, the Economy of the Philippines declined. With this, Filipinos revolutionized
the change of the form of government: Democracy.
But with the Democratic country we have right now, we cant seem to stop
the countless crimes happening almost everywhere. We cant seem to eradicate the
corruptions in the government and we cant seem to rise above poverty. Yolanda
victims until now havent gained full support from the government; SAF 44 families
until now are left hanging and the Pork barrel until now is yet to abolish. 30 years
from what we seemingly thought the 1986 game changer of the Philippine
government and still suffer the same hard life with the previous generations. Will
change ever come?
Maybe what we need is not a dictator that could cause a nations downfall at
the time of crisis or a democratic country for the people, by the people and of the
people. For dictatorship is good only when the governance is led to the progress of
the country instead of themselves and a democracy is good only when the people in
it is leading the country to change they want to see.
In Federalism, on the other hand, the resources that are ours are ours to
benefit from. Also, the separate groups in Mindanao would likely to agree on this
form of government. Unlike the current system, there is an unfair distribution of
funds between the local government and national government. But with a federal
set-up, there will be much funds available with each regions and the progress that
they could make depends varies. Therefore, the resources in Bacolod will only be

used for Bacolod and not for the road-widening and flyover constructing of other
major cities.
Everyone wants change but nobody wants to change the system. If we
remain on what we used to be, we could never expect great things to happened and
expect major change to come. If we choose the same choices we made 30 years
ago, there will never be a conclusion to the crimes and corruption consequently
make us all suffer to the poverty that we could have avoided through welcoming
change.]
