COURSE NAME: CARE OF CLIENTS WITH PROBLEMS IN OXYGENATION, FLUID AND
ELECTROLYTE BALANCE, NUTRITION AND METABOLISM AND ENDOCRINE
COURSE CODE: NCM 103
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course deals with the principles and techniques of
nursing care management of sick clients across lifespan with emphasis on the adult
and the older person, population group in any setting with alterations/problems in
oxygenation, fluid and electrolyte balance, nutrition and metabolism and endocrine
function.
COURSE CREDIT: 8 units lecture, 6 units RLE
CONTACT HOURS: 54 hours (concept on Metabolism and Endocrine}
PLACEMENT: 3RD YEAR, 1ST SEM
COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course and given actual clients with
problems in oxygenation, fluid and electrolyte balance, nutrition and metabolism
and endocrine function, the students should be able to:
1.
Utilize the nursing process in the care of individuals, families in
community and hospital settings.
a. Assess with client/s his/her/their condition/health status through
interview, physical examination, interpretation of laboratory
findings
b. Identify actual and at-risk nursing diagnosis
c. Plan appropriate nursing interventions with client/s and family for
identified nursing diagnosis
d. Implement plan of care with client/s and family
e. Evaluate the progress of his/her/their client/s condition and
outcomes of care
2. Ensure a well organized and accurate documentation system.
3. Relate with client/s and their family and the health team appropriately.
4. Observe bioethical concepts/principles, core values and nursing standards
in the care of clients; and
5. Promote personal and professional growth of self and others.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE (Concept of Metabolism and Endocrine): Given an adult

client (young, middle, old, old-old adult) with Responses to Altered Metabolic and
Endocrine, the student will be able to:
A. Apply knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology and assessment
techniques in caring for clients.
B. Assess the health status of a client
1. Conduct a health history and functional health status for clients
who have or are at risk for alterations in nutrition, gastrointestinal,
gallbladder, liver or pancreatic and endocrine function.
2. Perform systematic and comprehensive physical assessment to
validate assessed data.
3. Interprets deviations from normal findings in the physical,
assessment, diagnostic and laboratory examinations.
4. Utilize the assessed data in order to:
i. Prioritize nursing diagnosis
ii. Discuss the patho-physiological processes.
iii. Plan the care of clients utilizing evidence-based nursing
research.
iv. Achieve the best clinical outcomes utilizing ethico-moral and
legal principles
v. Plan effective care.
5. Implement individualized nursing care:
i. Safely
and
knowledgeably
administers
prescribed
medications and treatments.
ii. Actively participates in planning, coordinating culturally
sensitive interdisciplinary care
iii. Provide appropriate client education and health maintenance
and community based-care
iv. Efficiently and effectively utilize available resources in the
care of clients to achieve outcomes.
6. Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care, revising the nursing care
plan as needed to promote, maintain, or restore functional health
status of clients.
7. Maintain confidentiality and protect clients privacy.
8. Accurately records and report findings in clinical practice.
