Chapter 1 Project Background

The Project
According to Digital Review of Asia Pacific (2008), "Philippines is considered as one of Asia's
millions mobile phone subscribers and known to be as the text capital of the world". Nowadays, mobile
phones are not just a luxury but also a necessity and it is for business and personal purposes. Since it is
essential for mobile phone users to have connection and communication with others; they wanted it to be
battery packed always.
A Mobile phone is a technology that plays a very big role to the people. It is very helpful for daily
activities not only for the ordinary people but also for the businessmen. It provides a way to communicate
and stay connected to the families and friend by making a call and sending text messages. It is also used to
access the internet, updated with the news, social media and use to find a resource for assignments and
reports. Smart phones can also use for business for transactions and can organize schedules, set
reminders for the businessman to not forget any important meeting. A typical mobile phone last for 26
hours but if it is use daily it only last for 7-10 hours.
A battery is a device that stores energy and makes it available in an electrical form that needs a
proper voltage and ampere to be able not to damage the lifespan of the battery. This was a great idea
because it was a cheap form of power in the long run. Having an empty battery is one of the most irksome
things that can happen especially in an urgent situation.
Like a human, there is also a time that phone gets tired and a result to the cell phone to die. In
order for the mobile phone to use again, people use a charger to recharge the battery. But it is inconvenient
when you need to go anywhere because you need to bring a charger and find a power source in order for it
to charge. But then inventors find a way to resolve the problem. Developers invented many phone
charging station. It is a device that uses an amount of energy source from Alternating current (AC) to
charge a cell phone. Mobile phones are charged with plugging in different chargers ports. People can
charge at cheapest price and dont need to spend a time to find a place to charge.
Many phone charging stations are developed in the Philippines one of those is the I-Charj. Like the
other charging stations, it also has limitations and problems. The problems that are encountered in using
this phone charging booth are; the customer needs to watch the cellphone while charging, the user doesnt
know the voltage and current that the charging station is producing in their devices that can cause damage
to the lifespan of the battery, the power supply of the charging station is continuous even though the battery
is already full charge and last is the owner cannot monitor the sales report of the charging booth.
Through the above-observed problems, Lock N' Charge will propose and develop for alternative
solutions. One of the possible solutions that the design project considered in reducing this kind of problem
is to implement a system that is capable of recharging smartphones. The phone charging booth secures
the cellphones while charging and develop an online management system for the owner to update the
renting price and can monitor the service of the mobile charging booth anytime.

Project Objectives
The design project aims to develop a phone charging station that:
Secure and user-friendly

Chapter 2 Design Inputs

Lithium-ion battery
Lithium-Ion Batteries are rechargeable batteries that are commonly used in electronics gadgets
and have a high energy density. It has more advantages over other rechargeable batteries. When an Li-Ion
is charging it pack a lot of power and convert it into small size and when there are not in use, it doesnt lose
too much energy.
A lithium-ion battery typically charges in two stages. First comes the process called constant
current charging. This is the part that really is pretty simple. The charger for your phone or tablet will apply
a steady current of electricity to the battery to get all those electrons back to the anode. During this stage,
the charger just decides how much power is coming out of the fire hose and starts spraying. The higher that
constant current, the faster the battery can charge. High-voltage quick chargerslike the ones that are
starting to come with a lot of new phonestake advantage of this first stage to cram in the juice as quickly
as possible (at the cost of a bit of extra stress on the battery).
When the battery is 70 percent recharged, the procedure changes and flips over to constant
voltage charging. During this second stage, the charger makes sure that the voltagethat is, the difference
in current between the battery and the chargerstays the same rather than keeping the current constant.
Practically, this means that as the battery gets closer to full, the current the charger sends into it decreases.
As the battery gets full, the rate at which it charges slows down. Once you reach 100 percent, the charge
simply trickles in, just enough to account for the tiny, tiny bit of charge your battery loses naturally over
time. (Limer, 2015)
Properly Charge A Phone Battery
Battery is the most important part of the mobile phones without it the cell phone cannot be used.
There are some tips to properly charge a cellphones battery. First the user should know the battery
memory effect. It is a battery remembering remaining charge. Since the Li-ion dont suffer memory effect
charge the battery often but not all the way throughout the day and dont let the charge of the battery drop
to zero. Battery should not be charge to 100% because it will shorten the life span of the battery. The
cattery should be charge 100% once a month only. Most cell phone are smart enough to stop when the
battery is full. And it is not advisable to use any charger to the cellphone. (Jary, 2016)

Chapter 4 Constraints, Trade-off, and Standards

This chapter discussed about the constraints, trade-off and standards that the developers aims to
attain for the requirements specification of the design project and check the possible solutions meets the
desired to for the realistic constraints.

Design Constraints

These are the following constraints that the developers considered in designing the project.

Economic:
In economic constraints, the developers considered the price of the current related and similar
products on the market, the cost of our design project and the profit that will gain if it will use as a business.
The designer also considered designing a project for public use and it must be affordable by the customer.

Manufacturability
In manufacturability constraints, the developers considered the availability of the materials needed
to build the project and the components used must not be expensive but have a high quality.

Sustainability
In sustainability constraints, the developers considered the project if it is suite to use for business
and not only components but also the product itself considered a long life span.

Importance of Constraints

Constraints are important to consider in designing to visualize things that the developers need to
happen or would like to happen to the design project. It defines a set of all possible solutions in which it is
satisfied. It also helps the developer to decide which solutions are the best for the project.

The table 4.1 below contains the ranking of the possible solutions per constraint. Each possible solution is
ranked per constraint, 3 being the highest and 1 being the lowest. The total mean is computed by summing
the product of the importance rating and the rank per constraint. The developers give 50% to the
manufacturability constraints because it is the first impact that the user will see and also the functionality of
the project.

Total mean is computed by multiplying the rate of the device to the rate of that particular constraint and
summing the entire product as shown in Eq. 4.1
TOTAL MEAN = (PS X RS) + (PM X RM) + (PE X RE)
Equation No. 1: Total Mean
Where:
PS = Percentage for Sustainability Constraint
RS = Rating for Sustainability Constraint
PM = Percentage for Manufacturability Constraint
RM = Rating for Manufacturability Constraint
PE = Percentage for Economic Constraint
RE = Rating for Economic Constraint
Therefore, the computation will be used based on the given ranking percentage and rating is
TOTAL MEAN = (4 X RS) + (3 X RE) + (2 X RM).
