Sounding Out the Letters

CURRICULUM CONTENT DESCRIPTION (from ACARA):


Write using unjoined lower case and upper case letters (ACELY1663).
Understand that a letter can represent more than one sound and that a syllable must contain a
vowel sound (ACELA1459).
STUDENTS PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
Students are able to identify some to all of the letters of the alphabet as well as their
corresponding sounds. Students are able to write some to all of the letters of the alphabet.
LEARNING PURPOSE:
The purpose of this task is for students to expand on their identification of the letters of the
alphabet as well as their corresponding sounds, being able to write each letter and knowing what
the letter is and the sound it makes. Students will also be able to differentiate the use of lower
and upper case letters.

CATERING FOR DIVERSITY:
In order to cater for diversity, there is a second worksheet for the students who have finished the
first one with a second worksheet on handwriting and grammar that they can work through
silently. If students are struggling, I will sing the alphabet through with them so they can
understand which letters make certain sounds.

Introduction/Warm Up

- Gain students attention by; asking for attention, asking the students to sit
up quietly in their seats.
- Pose question how many letters are there in the alphabet?
- Sing through the alphabet with the students, counting the letters with
them.

- Hand out the worksheet to the students, asking them to write the letters
three times each as displayed on the worksheet.

Accept a range of answers, commenting on each.
Ask students to identify which letters are vowels, getting them to circle
which ones are vowels in red pencil on their worksheet.
Ask students the purpose of capital letters and when they are appropriate
to use.
