Fragments Of A New Housing Language: Contemporary Urban Housing In Korea

Archilife 2016 ISBN 9788996450870 Acqn 26277
Pb 17x24cm 224pp 225ills 190col 33.75
Paradoxically, the historical legacy of Korean housing is both heroic and mundane. Until recently,
the nations rapid urbanisation fuelled the creation of new regions of high-density dwellings, while
cycles of urban renewal continue to push the radical disjunction between new and historical
fabrics. Yet the ongoing impasse between developmental pressures and design progress has
reduced housing to its basic elements. A current wave of architects has begun formulating new,
efficient syntaxes with nuanced social qualities. While the works in this volume represent unique
solutions, what we can learn from their innovations goes far further, towards making conscious
typological advances.

Togo Murano was born in 1891 in Saga prefecture. He graduated at the Faculty of Architecture at
Waseda University. After working for the architecture office of Setsu Watanabe Architects, he
established his own architectural practice. In a current trend of rethinking the modern architectural
history, Togo Murano's designs have been re-evaluated. This edition contains 80 models, based
on his drawings and blueprints, of his still existing buildings, the ones which have been destroyed,
as well as the buildings in renovation, in order to tell the whole story of this innovative architect.

The Far Game - On The Korean Front: Constraints Sparking Creativity

Space Publishing 2016 ISBN 9791187071051 Acqn 26492
Pb 17x24cm 294pp 200ills 70col 56.25
The exhibition curated by Sung Hong Kim at the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale analyses
the nations hunger for living space in a hyper-dense urban environment, as well as the desire to
satisfy it by any means possible. In South Korea, most clients and landowners are paying for the
invisible quantity of the building, not the visible quality of the architecture, at the expense of a
clear Korean architectural identity. The so-called Far Game is particularly relevant due to recent
unprecedented growth, with Seoul being the prime example. Rather than resist, critics argue that
Korean architects must welcome the inherent tension, using it to spark creativity and innovation.

Housing Cairo - The Informal Response

Ruby Press 2016 ISBN 9783944074177 Acqn 26509
Hb 18x24cm 306pp 200ills 100col 42.75
Home to 20 million people and still growing, Greater Cairo mirrors the global phenomenon of
unplanned urban growth. Approximately 60 percent of the population of Africas biggest city lives
in so-called informal housing, typically five-to-ten-story concrete-and-brick-infill structures built
without permits in the desert or on former agricultural land. 'Housing Cairo: The Informal
Response' illuminates the architecture of informality and its mechanisms of production through a
series of theoretical essays and architectural design proposals. Central to the project is a reexamination of the concept of informality itself and its, often, negative connotations.

Criticat 2016 ISBN 9782954428499 Acqn 26553
Pb 16x23cm 332pp 200ills 26
'Criticat' is an independent journal of architectural criticism published twice annually. Based in
Paris, it was founded in 2007 by a group of architects, historians, and critics on a simple premise:
that informed and daring criticism could bring architecture back into everyday public discourse.
Twenty-three exemplary articles have been selected from the journal's first ten issues, and
appear here in English for the first time. Individual investigations tackle subjects from around the
globe: projects by Frank Gehry and Jrgen Mayer h, high-rise buildings in Paris, the purity of New
Zealand's landscape, New York's High Line, and much more.

Amsterdam-based office XML explores the complex relationship between space and politics by
documenting and comparing the plenary halls of the parliaments of all 193 United Nations
member states. Whether arranged in a semicircle or horseshoe, as opposing benches or
classroom style, the seats in these halls not only offer clues to a nations history, but also the
atmosphere in which its laws are shaped. Comparing contexts between divergent geographical
locations and governments, both democratic and authoritarian, the lexicon addresses these
spaces as more than symbolic representations of national values, portraying them as actors in
the shaping of our shared future.

Thierry Lagrange - Look Space! A Story Of Analogous Spaces

Grafische Cel 2016 ISBN 9789082139976 Acqn 26451
Pb 24x34cm 88pp 150ills 26
Architectural engineer Thierry Lagrange incorporates both his formal training and photography in
his ongoing research on analogous spaces. This publication examines the various approaches to
these spaces. The term analogous spaces highlights the analogies existing between the ways in
which knowledge is processed in different types of space. Knowledge may be safeguarded,
expanded, experienced, or transferred, while the space can be either actual or virtual. It refers to
a spatiality that is technological, a product of communication media, and as such an integral part
of our contemporary living experience, addressed in theoretical writings, workshops, and case
studies.

Jill Magid - The Proposal - Critical Spatial Practice 8

Sternberg Press 2016 ISBN 9783956791888 Acqn 26699
Pb 11x15cm 202pp 26ills 9col 12.95
Edited by Nikolaus Hirsch, Cari Kuoni Hesse McGraw, Markus Miessen
Contributions by Leonardo Daz Borioli, Nikolaus Hirsch, David Kim, Cuauhtmoc Medina, Daniel
McClean, Hesse McGraw, Elizabeth A. Povinelli, Ines Weizman
The eighth volume of the Critical Spatial Practice series focuses on Jill Magids The Barragn
Archives, a multiyear project that examines the legacy of Pritzker Prizewinning architect Luis
Barragn (19021988), and questions forms of power, public access, and copyright that construct
artistic legacy. The archive of Barragn was split in two after his deaththe personal archive is
kept in his home in Mexico, which is now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site; while his
professional archive was purchased in 1995 by Rolf Fehlbaum, chairman of the Swiss furniture
company Vitra, from a New York gallerist. It is said that Fehlbaum bought it as a gift for his then
fiance, Federica Zanco. She is the director of the Barragan Foundation, which also holds rights
to Barragns name. For the past twenty years the archive, housed below the Vitra headquarters,
has been inaccessible to the public.
With The Proposal Magid attempts to bring together Barragns professional and personal
archives by probing the architects official and private selves, and the interests of various
individuals and governmental and corporate entities who have become the archives guardians.
Magid, with permission of the Barragn family, commissioned a small amount of Barragns
cremated remains to be transformed into a diamond. The stone, set in a gold ring, was offered to
Zanco in exchange for the return of the professional archive to Mexico. Magids artwork directly
engages the intersections of the psychological and the judicial, national identity and repatriation,
international property rights and copyright law, authorship and ownership, the human body and
the body of work.

This volume marks the first publication of audio recordings by Heinrich Klotz, one of Europe's
greatest yet underappreciated architectural critics in the late 20th century. In them, he recounts
the eventful early years of the German Architecture Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt, where he served
as founding director. Besides offering an overview of the context in which he worked, Klotzs
deeply personal perspective and his keen depictions of the major events and figures in the
architecture of the late 1970s and early 80s serve to illuminate the evolving postmodern
movement. Included are critical essays, transcripts, and Klotz in conversation with postmodern
critic Charles Jencks.

We must continually remind ourselves that law originates in conflict, and that such concepts are
not static determinations, but rather are constantly being renegotiated. Applying this relationship
between law, regulations, and architectural practice, it becomes clear why the work of certain
architects has a political dimension. This volume attempts to examine the inherent meaning of
societal regulatory systems as these relate to architecture, taking the film directed by Arno
Brandlhuber and Christopher Roth, their submission to the 15th Architecture Biennale in Venice,
as its point of departure, and presents a broad series of case studies largely based on the work of
Alex Lehnerer.

This issue was conceived in close collaboration with Sandra Oehy, curator of the Swiss Pavilion
at the 15th Architecture Biennale in Venice, and Christian Kerez, the architect of that pavilions
Incidental Space. Kerez emphasises the non-referential, the non-predetermined, and the
alienation inherent to his project as a means of expanding upon what architecture can be today. It
embodies a new reciprocal relationship between material and the data cloud, one in which the
difference between depiction and reality ceases to existwhere a speculative space can be
released by architectures autonomy. With contributions by Philip Ursprung, Hito Steyerl, Mario
Carpo, and more.

Planetary Urbanism - The Transformative Power Of Cities

Arch + 2016 ISBN 9783931435332 Acqn 26689
Pb 24x30cm 236pp 200ills 150col 27
This special volume publishes the outcomes of the international competition Planetary Urbanism
Critique of the Present in the Medium of Information Design, which addressed the closely
intertwined issues of urbanisation and environmental protection. The choice of topic was made
with the hope of gaining insight into the social reality of life in the cities of the Global South. Living
conditions in cities are impacted by the global economy, and by the extremely imbalanced
interrelationships between production, consumption, and waste disposal on an international level.
Topics include the local effects of globalisation, informal vs. regulated, migration, urban
metabolism, more.
