Question

What is the difference between an exothermic and an endothermic reaction and what is the
evidence that each has occurred?
Reaction 1 NH4NO3 + H2O NH4OH + HNO3
1. Measure 5 mL of water from the small container using the graduated cylinder. Pour the
water into a plastic bag.
2. Raise your hand and you will be given 1 spoonful (around 3 grams) of Ammonium
Nitrate.
3. CLOSE THE BAG IMMEDIATELY AND SEAL IT!!!!!!
4. Using the thermometer on the outside of the bag, record the temperature at its peak (high
or low)
Qualitative Observation (describe what you see)

Quantitative Observation
Starting temperature: 21 C
Ending temperature:
Reaction 2 NaOH + H2O Na + OH
1. Measure 20 mL of water using the graduated cylinder and pour it into the plastic bag.
2. Raise your hand and you will be given approximately 1 gram of Sodium Hydroxide.
3. CLOSE THE BAG IMMEDIATELY!!!!!
4. Use the thermometer on the outside of the bag to record the temperature at its peak (high
or low).
Qualitative Observation (describe what you see)

Quantitative Observation
Starting temperature: 21 C
Ending temperature:

Analysis
1. Calculate the change in temperature for each reaction (Change in temperature = ending
temperature starting temperature). Show your work.

2. Which reaction was exothermic and which was endothermic? Use your data from
question 1 to justify your answer.

3. Rewrite each reaction below. Label the reactants and products in each. Which side would
energy appear on in each reaction?

4. Why do you think each substance reacted the way it did with water? Hint: remember the
video that we watched about the family that reacts with water.

5. What is the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reaction and what is the
evidence that each has occurred?
