Question
What procedure would provide the minimal downtime installation of a patch roll-up to a distributed system using
redundant HMI servers?
Is there any recommendation for installation of patch roll-up in FactoryTalk distributed network?

Environment
FactoryTalk View Site Edition Version 5.0 and later

Answer
The attached document provides a multi-step checklist detailing the steps needed to perform a minimal downtime
patching of a distributed FactoryTalk View SE system, using redundant HMI servers.

The following is the high level outline from the document :

Warning: The following outline is a brief overview and should only be used as a reference. The attached
document contains important details for each step. Failing to follow the detailed steps in the attached
document could result in unanticipated system downtime.

Part 1: Preparation for applying patch roll-up.

1. Preparing to patch the FactoryTalk View SE HMI application.
2. Back up the FactoryTalk View SE HMI application.

Part 2: Applying patches to computers in the FactoryTalk View SE network.

1. Apply patch roll-up on Server #1.
2. Apply patch roll-up on Workstation #1.
3. Apply patch roll-up on other selected Client computers.
4. Test the FactoryTalk View SE application with the new patches.
5. Apply patch roll-up on Server #2.
6. Apply patch roll-up on remaining un-patched Client computers.
7. Test to verify redundancy operation for HMI and Data servers.
8. Investigation of any potential issues that arise after initial testing.

Note on "No Downtime"

There is the possibility of having "no downtime" in a system with redundant HMI / Data servers. A similar procedure
related to upgrading is documented in the FactoryTalk View Site Edition Installation Guide
(http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/in/viewse-in003_-en-e.pdf) Publication
VIEWSE-IN003N in the Chapter about Upgrading FactoryTalk View Site Edition.

This chapter includes about thirty pages documenting that upgrade procedure. The method outlined in the Upgrading
Chapter is much more involved and time consuming. For most typical system installations that need patching, most
would prefer to go with the simpler and quicker procedure for minimal downtime.
