Ahigh-endnavigationsystemtheNavigationProfessionalsystem(SA609)isofferedfortheG12as
standardequipmentintheUSmarket.TheheartofthehardwareisthenextgenerationHeadUnit
High2.Allcalculationsofthenavigationsystemareperformedinthisunit.Thereceptionandsensor
electronicscomponentsweredistributedamongseveralcontrolunitsintheG12.
The3-yearsubscriptionintroducedwiththeF23formapdataupdatesisalsofullyimplementedfor
theG12.Therearealsonewchallengesfortheserviceorganization.
Intermsofnavigationhardware,thenavigationsystemconsistsofafixed12.3"centralinformation
display(CID)withtouchscreenwitharesolutionof1440x540pixels,theHeadUnitHigh2HU-H2
andtheiDrivecontrollerCON.
Withregardstooperation,theiDrivecontrollerwithrotaryandpush-buttonfunctionandthetouchsensitivesurfacewithhandwritingdetection(iDriveTouchController)arestandardoptionsforthe
USmarket.Thefavoritebuttonsontheheadunithaveanewfeatureaswellasthetouchscreen
operationonthecentralinformationdisplay(CID).
TherearealsoahostofnewfeaturesforthenavigationfunctionsintheG12.Theserelatetothe
areasofmapview,destinationinput,display(guiding),routingandthespecialfunctionsfornavigation.
ThehighlightsincludethenewlydesignedMicroCityMapwithascaleofupto10m,thelearning
navigationfunction,theroutemagnetandroutevisualizationbymeansofanaerialview.
Inaddition,controlofthenavigationsystemviathevoiceprocessingsystem(SVS)wassignificantly
improvedintheG12.Themodifiedvisual/acousticfeedbackoftheSVSinthevehiclefacilitates
operation.Anewfeatureisanadditionaloff-boardversionofthevoiceprocessingsystemviathe
text"function(MessageDictationbyNuance )introducedatBMWin2012,theoff-boardSVSis
processedbyanexternalproviderandtransmittedbacktothevehicleinseconds.Youcanfindout
aboutthedifferencesbetweentheindividualembedded(onboard)andoff-boardSVSversionsinthis
trainingmanual.
Amainapplicationareaforthevoiceprocessingsystem(SVS)withitsembedded(harddisk)and

3.1.Introduction
TheG12hasbeenextendedbyanumberoffunctionswithrespecttooperationofthenavigation
systeminadditiontothenewlydesignedTouchController.Thegesturerecognitioncameraisnot
yetusedforthenavigationfunctionattheserieslaunch.However,anumberofgesturesfornavigation
areplannedforthenearfuture.TheCentralInformationDisplay(CID)willalreadybeequippedwitha
touchdisplayattheserieslaunch.Allfunctionsofthenavigationsystemcanbeoperatedwiththis.
Inputviathevoiceprocessingsystempromisesaquantumleapforward.Here,embeddedSVS
(harddisk)oroff-boardSVS(BMWbackend)isofferedincombination(whichisstandardonUS
marketG12versions).
TheGPStunerforthenavigationsystemwasrelocatedtotheTelematicCommunicationBoxTCB2.
ThiswaspossiblefortheG12sincetheTCB2isincludedinthestandardequipmentinallvehiclesof
theBMW7Series.
TheTCB2isconnecteddirectlywiththerooffinasahardwarecomponent.Youcanfinddetailson
theTCB2intheG12Telephoneandtelematicsystemstrainingmanual.Theyawratesensorand
longitudinalaccelerationsensorhavealsobeenrelocatedandtheirsignalsaretransmittedtothe
HeadUnitHigh2viathebussystem.AnFMtripletunerisavailablefortrafficinformation.This
suppliesRDS/TMCinformationtotheheadunitatregularintervals.Ifthecustomerhasordered
theoptionalequipmentRealTimeTrafficInfoRTTI(OE6AM)viatheConnectedDriveStoreorexworks,thisinformationisdisplayedintheG12navigationsystemasadditionaltrafficinformationwith
colouredmessagesanddiversionrecommendations.
Thenavigationsoftwarewithapplicationandnavigationmapdataisagaininstalledonapartition
ofthe200GBharddiskintheHeadUnitHigh.Anewfeaturehereaboveallistheautomaticmap
updateprocessincombinationwitha3-yearsubscriptionforthecustomer.

off-boardSVSdatabasemanagedbyanexternalprovider,voicecommandscannowbeprocessed
directlybythesystemthatwerepreviouslynotunderstood.Thelanguagedialoguetakesplaceas
ifyouarehavingaconversationwithachauffeurandnotwithanelectronicsystem.
Thenewfeatureisknownas"naturallanguageunderstanding"andthebasicfunctionsarealready
presentontheharddiskdriveintheheadunit.AdditionalfunctionssuchastherecognitionofPoints
ofInterest(POIs),e.g.theAllianzArenainMunich,WembleyStadiuminLondonortheFontanadiTrevi
inRomearerecognizedwithoutproblemsbythesystem.However,thedataconnectiontotheprovider
mentionedaboveisnecessaryforthis.

ThenavigationsoftwareisstoredontheharddiskdriveoftheHeadUnitHigh.Thismeansthatthe
headunitisthenavigationcomputerofthevehicle.Themapmaterialisalsostoredontheharddisk
driveintheHeadUnitHigh2(HU-H2).
Anewfeatureisthefactthatthecompletesensorsystemofthenavigationsystemhasbeen
decentralizedandisnowlocatedindifferentcontrolunitsoftheG12.Theprocessednavigationdata
fromtheGPSantennaandGPStunerissentbytheTelematicCommunicationBox2totheHeadUnit
High2viathenewOABREthernetbussystem.
ThedataoftheyawratesensorforthenavigationsystemisprovidedbytheCrashSafety
Module(ACSM).IncombinationwiththelongitudinalaccelerationdatafromtheDynamic

Sincethemapdataispartoftheheadunitanditsharddiskdrive,thetopicofmapupdateiscovered

Avoicecontrolsystemwasofferedforthefirsttimein1998intheE38(notethatnotallthedates
sitedherecoincidewiththefunctionintroductiondatesintheUSmarket).Thisallowedthe
drivertooperatethetelephoneandnavigationsystemwithouttakinghiseyesoffthetrafficconditions.
Aspartoffurtherdevelopmentofthevoiceprocessingsystem,thenumberofspokencommands
increasedsignificantlyinthefollowingversionsfromtheinitial30commands.
In2003,thenumberofspokencommandsgrewtoaround470.Thisincreasetookplacewiththe
introductionofthefirstheadunitwiththenavigationsystemProfessional,theCCCforE63/E64and
E60.
FortheinterfaceboxULF-SBX-Highintheyear2007,thevoiceinputsystemHigh,nowalready
referredtoasvoiceprocessingsystem(SVS),wasconsistentlyenhanced.Atthistime,itwas
alreadypossibletocontrolcommunication,navigation,assistancewindow,on-boardinformation,
entertainment,climateandsettingbymeansofvoicecommands.Whenthevoiceprocessingsystem
HighwithaULF-SBX-Highwasinstalled,itwaspossibletoswitchbetween2languages.Onlyone
languagewasavailablewiththeheadunitCCC.
Withtheintroductionoftheheadunitwith2ndgenerationProfessionalnavigationsystem,theCIC,
in2008,thevoiceprocessingsystemHighwasinstalledonapartoftheinternalharddiskdrive(HDD).
Thismeantthatover1000voicecommandsand8languageswerethenavailable.Thelanguage
settingscouldbechangedinthe"Settings"menu.
In2010,thevoiceprocessingsystemSVSintheCICwasfurtherenhanced.Theso-called"One
Shot"inputwasintroducedinthenavigationsystem.Fromnowon,itwaspossibletoenterthetown,
roadandhousenumberinthesysteminacoherentsentence.Thisdatawasthenenteredjointlyin
thesystem.
Thelastmajornewdevelopmentwasin2012withtheintroductionoftheHeadUnitHigh(HU-H)
(3rdgenerationheadunitwithProfessionalnavigation).ThefunctionMessageDictation-Speech
totextallowedvoicecommandstobesenttoanexternalproviderforthefirsttime.Thespeechwas
convertedbytheproviderintotextandthetextmodulesthensentbacktotheheadunitforfurther
processing.FromherethetextwassenttotheCIDfordisplay.ThetextcouldthenbesentasanSMS
