Laila bt Sidek proved that poverty and family problems did not stop her from
succeeding in her studies. Laila scored straight As in the recent UPSR examination. She was
selected as the best pupil in her school for her achievements in her studies and co-curricular
activities. Her headmaster was very proud of her. Her father, a labourer, works hard to
support the family of six. In the morning, he taps rubber trees. In the afternoon, he does
carpentry to earn extra income. Her mother is a housewife. She helps to make ends meet by
selling nasi lemak. She also weaves mats to sell. Yesterday evening, when interviewed by
three reporters, Laila said that she owed her success to her teachers and parents. By having
group discussions with her friends and planning her time well, she managed to score good
grades in her examinations.

Every day in Malaysia, each household throws out about 4.5kg of rubbish. This
rubbish is dumped in more than 170 landfills. These are found all over the country. The
government spends more than 40 million ringgit each year to get rid of the rubbish.
We can help to reduce the amount of rubbish that is thrown away if we recycle.
When we recycle, we reduce waste. Things that can be recycled are paper, cardboard, plastic,
aluminium and glass. There are collection centres set up by various companies that will
accept these recyclables. Some will even pay for the waste you dont want!
You have to separate the different types of recyclables before you send them to the
centres. Recyclables are collected in large amounts and sent to factories to be recycled.
Aluminium cans are melted down and made into new aluminium products. Glass and plastic
too, are recycled the same way.
Now that you know how important recycling is, do your part to help reduce the
amount of waste going into landfills.
