Thefourmajordesigntopicsarethecranedesign,theplacementofthe
system,thecranefoundationandtheliftingmechanism.
CraneDesign
Duetotheconstraintsoftheroom,onlytwomaindesignideaswere
sufficient.Thesedesignsincludedaceilingmountedtrolleysystemanda
cantileverrotatingsystem.Apreviousproposalforaceilingmounted
trolleysystemfromtheNavywasquotedat$40,000.Thisshowedthata
ceilingmountedtrolleydesignwouldgreatlyexceedtheprojectbudget.
Therefore,thecantileverrotatingsystemwaschosenforfurther
investigation.Theteamwasabletofindastateoftheartproductinthe
researchprocess.ThecranetypeisajibcraneproducedbyGorbel[6],
whichisabletorotate360degrees.Gorbelprovidesalargerangeofspan
lengthsandheightclearances.Apictureofthecraneisshowninfiguresix

Introduction
Thereweretwomainvariablesinvolvedindecidingwheretoplacethe
crane.Thesystemhadtobeabletoreachallsixcansandmovethemtothe
workingarea.Thesystemalsohadtobemountedfarenoughawayfrom
thesideoftheisolatedslabtoprovideenoughcounterbalancetoovercome
theloadingmoments.Calculationsconcerningcounterbalanceareincluded
intheCalculationssectionbelow.Figuresevenbelowshowsthefinal
placementofthecrane,whichfulfillsalltherequirements.Thespanofthe
jibcraneforthisparticularplacementwassetat16feet.

Gorbelspecifiedafourbysevenbysevenfootconcretefoundationto
mountthecraneon.Aonefootthickisolatedslabalreadyexistedinthe
roommakingitimpossibletomeetthefoundationrequirementsofGorbel.
Twomaindesignideaswerediscussedduringthedesignstagetosolvethis
foundationproblem.Athreebysevenbysevenfootslabofconcretecould
bebuiltontopoftheoldfoundationmeetingthespecificationsofGorbel.
Or,ametalplatefoundationcouldbedesignedtoaccommodatetheloads
inducedbythecrane.Therewasnotenoughroomtobuildaslabwith
neededdimensions,therefore,itwasdecidedtodesignametalplate
foundation.

Thismetalplatewouldbefastenedtotheexistingslabusingananchor
system.Thecranewouldbefastenedontopofthemetalplateusingbolts
orpossiblybywelding.Decisionsonfasteningsystems,metalplate
dimensions,andhowtofastenthecranetotheplateareshowninthe
analysissectionofthisreport.
Analysis
PlateThickness
An"ASTMA36"carbonsteeldistributedbyEarleM.JorgensenCo
[10]waschosenforthemetalplatefoundation.Thismaterialprovidesan
ultimatetensilestrengthof58,000psi.Thetotalloadingmomentatthe
baseofthecrane,includingtheperiscopecan,theliftingdeviceandthe
massoftheIbeam,wasdeterminedtobe48,850ft.lbs.Failureofthe
platecausedbyshearandbendingwasexamined[SeeAnalysisforthe
PlateThicknessbelow].Thethicknessoftheplatewascalculatedwitha
safetyfactoroftwo.Withbendingasthecontrollingmodeoffailure,the
minimumplatethicknesswascalculatedtobe1.1inches.
PlateWidths
APowersRawlepoxyanchorsystemwaschosentofastenthemetalplate
totheexistingfoundation.Thissystemhashighbondstrengths,iseasyto
installandisofferedatareasonableprice[2].Everyanchorhasanultimate
loadcapacityof8,915lbs.ina2000psi.concretefoundation.Theanchor
diameterwillbe7/8"andtheholestobedrilledintheconcretewillbe1"in
diameter.Usingthestrengthsofthisanchorsystemitwasthenpossibleto
calculatetheplatewidths.Bycalculatingthetotalmomentatthecranebase
andinsertingthisintoastaticmodelitwasfoundthattheminimumwidths
oftheplateneedtobe4.63x4.63usingeightepoxyanchors.[See

Welding
AnA.W.S.E60xxweldwasspecifiedduringthedesignprocess.Theheight
ofthefilletweldmustcomplywiththefailureanalysiscalculationsaswell
asA.W.S.standards[5].Therefore,thefinalheightoftheweldwas
determinedtobe3/8".[SeeWeldAnalysisbelow]
