DOUBLE INTEGRAL

DOUBLE INTEGRAL
In our treatment of multiple integrals which involve a function of several variables, we
shall refer to an integral of a function of a single variable as a single integral. For
double integral of a function of two variables, we shall require that the function be
defined on a closed region R2.

DOUBLE INTEGRAL
The simplest kind of closed region in R2 is a closed
rectangular region. Two distinct points A(a1,a2) and
B(b1,b2), such as that 1 1 and 2 2 , determine a
rectangle having sides parallel points (b1,a2) and (b2,a1)
are called the vertices of the rectangle. The line segments
joining consecutive vertices are called the edges of the
rectangle. The set of all points interior to the rectangle is
called an open rectangular region and the set of all points
in the open rectangle, together with the points on the edges
is called a closed rectangular region.

DOUBLE INTEGRAL

DEFINITION OF A DOUBLE INTEGRAL

Let be a function of two variables defined on a closed rectangular region R. The

double integral on R, denoted by , is defined by

, = lim ( , )

=1

Where, ( , ) be an arbitrary points in the ith subregion of the function value there.
