Computer Manual to Accompany Pattern Classification and its associated

MATLAB software is an excellent companion to Duda: Pattern Classfication,
2nd ed, (DH&S). The code contains all algorithms described in Duda as well
as supporting algorithms for data generation and visualization. The Manual
uses the same terminology as the DH&S text and contains step-by-step worked
examples, including many of the examples and figures in the textbook.<br>
The Manual is accompanied by software that is available electronically. The
software contains all algorithms in DH&S, indexed to the textbook, and uses
symbols and notation as close as possible to the textbook. The code is
self-annotating so the user can easily navigate, understand and modify the
code.

Valuable supplement to text, July 16, 2004

This package includes the manual itself and access to the pattern classification toolbox (available via the web). The manual
provides a brief introduction to MATLAB and the toolbox, and an appendix (nearly half the length) containing descriptions of the
toolbox programs organized by chapter in the Pattern Classification text. It's all very well done, and therefore extremely helpful in
learning and applying ideas and algorithms. For people with a programming background but little experience with MATLAB,
working with this package (especially the toolbox source code) is enough to get you up and running. Highly recommended.

Excellent toolbox to learn & use., July 9, 2004
Reviewer: A reader
I was one of the early access recipient of this toolbox and found it extremely useful. It basically has a whole bunch of cleaning and
classification algos.
The toolbox also allows one to extend its use with new algorithms, tweaks or to use our dataset. As long as its formatted in the
same fashion.
I would strongly recommend this toolbox, if you are looking for additional material, another book worth having is Christopher
Bishop's book.

If you want to get up to speed on Matlab and plan to use it for image processing, this book is a must.
I have lots of experience in computer graphics and in programming languages like C++ and C#, but prior to reading this book I
had never really used Matlab nor implemented complicated image processing algorithms. This book is a great introduction to both.
The book is divided in twelve chapters touching both low-level image processing (e.g. spatial filtering) and higher-level concepts
required for computer vision, like image registration and segmentation. Gonzalez et al are talented writers, explaining relatively
complicated concepts clearly and concisely, without getting lost in the mathematical details. People interested in the more
theoretical aspects should (and probably already have) check their other book.
The only potential downside of this book is that it's definitely designed to be read sequentially, one chapter at a time. The matlab
concepts are introduced piece by piece. For example, if you skip Chapter 5 (on image restoration, i.e. getting rid of noise) you may
not realize that you missed the introduction to the image registration functions. Personally I liked this style (it added variety to a
potentially dry subject), but a reader with less time to cover all of the matter may find this to be a problem.

I gave a DIP class last semester using this book. I found it provided the easiest way to make students acquainted with DIP. Before
using this book, I tried Visual C++ for implementation. However, both of us (i.e., students and me) couldn't be satisfied, I guess.
Now the implementation is easier than ever, and I can explain more about DIP itself to students.
