Chunk Body Paragraph Essay

Every year millions of refugees seek safety and anew tomorrow from their homeland
countries that may be undergoing national crisis such as war threat, terrorists, and religious
prejudice. These helpless exiles simply seek the shelter and support of human lifestyle to reestablish themselves from the trauma caused by their homes. Although, the plight of this
relocation process to find new destiny include consideration of various environmental challenges
that when finding a location of rescue. Therefore, as a demographer, by researching topics of
sustainable development, exponential and sigmoidal growth curves, and demographic transition
theory we can determine the number of refugees Houston can support.
Dating back to the times of pre-colonization, Native Americans lived as self-governed
indigenous peoples who relied on hunting-gathering economic lifestyles. Societies kept to
themselves and attained few relations with other tribes therefore maintaining peaceful nomadic
life. Although, following the arrival of Spanish colonists, natives suffered invasion of their land,
resources, rights, and liberties. With little resistance posed against the Europeans, the people
gradually colonized native land and named it their own. With these events occurring centuries
ago, such issues would not likely arise in the resettling location of Houston, Texas for the
refugees, although in the event of these problems resurrecting, there are few solutions. To avoid
the possible reoccurring events of history, specific forms of government and previously
established laws must oblige. Native Houstonians maintain their land and rights, while Lebanon
refugees peacefully respect the safe haven provided to them. Possible changes that may result
from the relocation at Lake Houston Wilderness Park include the limited resource availability to
outside sources beside the refugee camp, loss of biodiversity in the area, and the loss of a

historical local landmark. Moreover, in aspects of historical importance, the site should be a
successful relocation park.
In relevance to our prime mission, reviewing statistics of survivorship curves and
reproductive strategies will provide estimates for the success of our relocation of the Lebanon
refugees. Survivorship curves demonstrate the population patterns in a certain species over time.
Furthermore, studying the curves of organisms in the location, we could further predict the
ecological effects of introducing one million refugees to the area. Ecologist Emily Rauschert
spoke upon the benefits of using curves to determine the long-term outcomes of an environment
by stating, The shape of survivorship curves can be affected by both biotic and abiotic factors,
such as competition and temperature, although survivorship curves visually answer these
demographic questions. After reviewing data of density dependent and independent factors
impact on the curves, as well as past failures in colonization, the detail of the efficiency of visual
aids are proven. By gathering information from both historical occurrences, and visual
survivorship growth curves, theories of the outcome of the relocation mission are measurable.
Other deciding factors that may contribute to the successful relocation of the Lebanese
include the evidence supporting the demographic transition theory. This visual incorporates the
five stages and patters of demographics in society by providing rankings followed by detailed
characteristics and statistics that allow the sorting of countries by which stage they may fall.
Reputable author Holtz-Eakin comments, The old adage is that demography is destiny, and the
United States will surely undergo a demographic transition in the next 25 years. By deciphering
the chart, Holtz underlies his understanding of the patterns regarding the theories relation to the
refugees. By providing the analogy demographics is density, the relations in accordance with the
ranking system of stages one to five can be determined. Similar to the survivorship curve, the

visual demographic transition theory chart also provides relevant visual aid for developing
solutions to possible problems that may arise in the relocation center. Thus, tying into historical
relevance, the demographic transition theory represents the extensive separation between
developed and non-developed stage countries. Therefore, understanding of the demographic
transition theory further deepens our understanding of demographics, and relocating the Lebanon
refugees efficiently.
The final participating factor in relocation research includes the effects of exponential
and sigmoidal growth curves and carrying capacity numbers. Reviewing the logistics of the two,
exponential and sigmoidal growth curves demonstrate the growth and fall of populations in
accordance to various shapes. Differing shapes represent factors that come along with the fate of
each shape such as dependent and independent natural effects. Detailing carrying capacity, this
equation represents the amount of people a society can hold without demographic and overpopulation challenges. Two esteemed professors comment on the use of these demographic tools
by mentioning, The suitability of such theoretical model to predict the real growth of population
was empirically assessed. (Sedmak & Sheer, 2014). With this knowledge, consideration of both
visual curves is obliged in investigation for effects on relocation. A recognizable motif in each
method of demographic recording includes the similarity to previous historical context that has
occurred in the past. With this information, improvement and innovation is attainable in order to
prevent further failure. After careful consideration, the use of exponential and sigmoidal growth
curves, along with the reflection of carrying capacity, will be a precise device for strategically
planning the relocation of the refugees along with the previously mentioned methods of data
collection.

Knowing this, as demographers, after studying topics of sustainable development,

exponential and sigmoidal growth curves, and demographic transition theory, the number of
refugees Houston can support is dependent on these data sheets as well as historical evidence.
These ecological topics all allude to the knowledge of environmental sustainability through
extensive visuals, and relevant information. Therefore, with the location chosen and intricate
planning, the relocation of one million Lebanon refugees will operate sufficiently without
affecting the greater Houston area.
