CAT 1
1(a) Four ways of improving lecture method.
By using teaching or learning resources like charts, photographs and realia for clarification of
concepts. This enables proper understanding of ideas presented to learners.
In addition, lecture methods can be improved by using gestures and body movements. This
makes leaning interesting and appealing hence maintain activeness in class.
The instructor can use tonal variations to show emphasis on important points which keeps
learners attentive.
The instructor can also crack jokes where necessary. This is to break the monotony of listening
and taking down short notes making learning an interesting adventure.

b)Advantages of lecture method.

i. It gives the instructor chance to expose students to unpublished or not readily available
materials.
ii. Complements certain individual learning preferences, some students depend upon the structure
provided by highly teacher centered methods.
iii. It allows the instructor to precisely determine the aim, content, organization, pace and direction of
presentation.
iv. It facilitates large classroom communication where the other teaching methods may not be
applicable.
Disadvantages
i. It places students in a passive rather than active role where learners do not participate in
anything hence hinders learning.
ii. It encourages one way communication, therefore the lecturer must make conscious effort to
become aware of students problems and students understanding of the content without verbal
feedback.
iii. It requires considerable amount of students time outside the classroom to enable understanding
and long term retention of content.
2(a) Reasons for preparing a lesson plan
i.
Helps to clear about what you want to teach thus making strategies and methods to teach.
ii. It may contain room for unpredictable events which helps teachers to be ready to cope with
whatever happens unplanned .
iii. Also may play the role of a reminder for teachers when they get destructed during teaching .
iv. A lesson gives the teacher a framework of what is to be done in class . This is an overall shape
of events .
v. A lesson suggest the level of professionalism and real commitment of a teacher.

(b) Factors to poor implementation of a lesson plan

i.
ii.
iii.
iv.
v.

Failure to use media resources .

Fear to teach tough topics
Failure to observe teaching methods
shyness of the teacher
Mismanagement of time as indicated in the lesson plan A teacher may take more or less time as
it is indicated in the lesson plan.

(C)Factors to consider when choosing a teaching method

i. Consider the level of learners . Who they are and at what age are they so as to understand and
interpret concepts .
ii. The instructor must consider the objectives of the lesson . Deter min whether the teaching
method will help achieve the set goals
iii. consider also the time available . If it is sufficient to use the method and setting up of the
teaching and learning resources.
iv. Consider the size of the class . Will the teaching method be efficient according to the size of the
class?e.g lecture method can be used for a large class .
v. You have to consider the resources available . For example experimental and discovery method
need adequate facilities to implement

CAT 2
1. Characteristics of learners that can be natured to enhance learning in mathematics
Learners have a little knowledge hence they are not empty headed . They can make their own
knowledge basing on what they already know. This character can be nurtured by the use of
discovery method of teaching where the teacher gives problems with hints and allows the
learners to find solutions on their own
Learners are curious . They are always eager to know more about something they did not
know . This charterer can be nurtured by the use of discovery method , experimental method
and field work . Learners are given tasks to work on and find their solutions.
Good learners share what they have learned . This can be nurtured by the use of group
discussions where learners with different abilities are grouped budgeter to share ideas on what
they have conceptualized.

3. Main steps to consider in a remedial lesson for mathematics.

Identify the students with strengths and weaknesses.
Discover your students learning styles. Once you know that you can tailor your teaching
methods accordingly.
Strengthen the basic mathematics skills through appropriate learning styles and strategies.
Have the students keep a note book listing mathematics facts, vocabulary and procedures in their
own words.

5. George pol ya s strategies of teaching mathematics as problem solving.

Understanding the problem.
The teacher should be able to state the problem in his or her own words , what he /she is
trying to find , the unknowns and what information does he/she obtain from the problem .
Devising a plan.
You have to look for pattern , examine related problems and determine if the same
technique can be applied .Examine a simpler or special case of the problem to gain insight into
the solution of the original problem .
Carrying out the plan .
Compliment the strategies in step two and perform any necessary actions or
computations .Check each step of the plan as you proceed .This may be intuitive checking or a
formal proof of each step. Keep accurate records of your work .
Looking back
Check the results in the original problem . Proof may be required sometimes . Interpret
the the solutions in terms of the original problems . Does it make sense ? Determine other
methods of solving the problem. Determine other related problem that use the same technique.
